Acer has confirmed it will release its first self-branded smartphone in Q1 2009. The handset will be co-developed by Acer’s own original smartphone R&D team and their counterparts from E-Ten, the company acquired by Acer back in September.Â
E-Ten, it has been revealed, will focus on real-time stock tracking devices, a return to its original 1990s form. Meanwhile Acer will take the lead in smartphone development, with chairman JT Wang predicting the segment will be a significant growth area for the company over the next 3-5 years.
No specifications, pricing or geographical availability details have been released by the company. However during the takeover Acer did confirm that the device would be Windows based, presumably meaning Microsoft’s Windows Mobile OS. Representatives from the company have previously suggested that, carrier partners depending, the first devices will be launched in Western Europe and Russia.

Accessory manufacturer Incipio have announced a microphone attachment for the iPod nano 4G. Bizarrely named Lloyd, the microphone snaps onto the base of the iPod and allows you to access its onboard sound recorder. There’s also a pass-through headphone connector.
Â
Incipio claim Lloyd is designed to “reduce wind and breath tones”, though it’s unclear whether that means it has any sort of active noise reduction. More likely they’re referring to the physical design of the microphone itself.
Since it only requires connecting to the headphone socket, not the docking connector, it can be pivoted out of the way when you need to recharge or sync (with the cable; obviously you’d need to take it off to dock the iPod). The Incipio Lloyd is available now, in black and white, priced at $17.99.
Press Release:

If you’re looking for a way to give the sound on your iPod Touch an extra boost, check out these portable speakers that appear to poke out of the sides of your media player.

With their ear-like appendages, these Green House SPA-214ct speakers do look a little bit goofy (or like some other Disney character with big ears), but they do put the speakers in just the right location to provide decent stereo sound.

When not in use, the speakers rotate out of site and hide on the back of an acrylic case that envelops your Touch. The speaker also acts as a stand for your device thanks to a clever hinge mechanism that swings into action when the speakers are stowed.

A built-in rechargeable battery can be juiced up via your USB port, and you’ll get about 8 hours of sound on a single charge.
While the speakers are officially designed for the iPod Touch, you might be able to get it to work with an original iPhone too, but you’ll need to flip into Airplane Mode to use them. Originally available only in Japan, the guys over at Dynamism have brought these to the States for $59.99 (USD).

A mobile advertising platform is claiming to be able to offer Flash adverts on the iPhone, although the method by which they do so is unknown. Greystripe offer advertisers standard IAB-format flash adverts and “tailgate” games, in which promoted content is added into downloadable content.
According to Greystripe, they now have a number of “Flash creation tools” for the iPhone which can offer advertisers “all of the creative power of Flash” on the handset. This seems to be differentiated from the in-game adds, which presumably merely resemble true Flash titles. However the company’s exact methods are unexplained.
Apple has long been criticised for not including support for Flash on their cellphone. Various rumors have circulated about the readiness of a suitable client by Adobe, held back by Apple themselves.
Press Release:
Flash Finally Launches on the iPhone via Advertising Units by Greystripe
Online IAB Standard Flash Ads and New “Tailgate” Games Can Be Instantly Extended to iPhone Audiences
SAN FRANCISCO–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Today Greystripe announced that they will now be offering advertisers the ability to target the iPhone audience for the first time through rich media ads including Flash IAB medium rectangles and game-in-game (or âtailgateâ) ads. The largest ad-supported applications and games network has made marketing to the iPhone mobile audience turnkey for agencies, digital media buyers and brands by supporting online ad servers like Googleâs DoubleClick and Microsoftâs Atlas.
“Greystripe’s rich media ads performed extremely well for us,â said Michelle Mayorga, Mobile Director at Rock the Vote, a Greystripe advertiser. âAdvertising in the iPhone with highly engaging ads was perfect for our mission to build the political power of young people because the iPhone reaches a highly targeted demographic.”
In an effort to make it easier for the online media buyer to purchase mobile, Greystripe has brought creative power to the iPhone with Flash creation tools. Each of Greystripeâs new ad formats are focused on consumer engagement:
GS.Impact â offers all of the creative power of Flash on an iPhone, allowing brands to extend any online advertising campaign directly into mobile
GS.Tailgate â offers the ability to create miniature advertiser-branded games in Flash and place them before, during or after existing iPhone games
Actions for all of Greystripeâs ad formats include branding, click to YouTube, iTunes, maps, App Store, data, call, audio, survey and canvas.
“Mobile has long been in need of a scalable advertising model and Greystripe’s new ad formats resolve that issue on the iPhone,” said Michael Cai, Director of Digital Media and Gaming at Parks Associates. “Using the iPhone’s revolutionary platform, Greystripe has solved the serving, reporting, third-party tracking and, best of all, ad creation problems that have plagued the mobile advertising industry since inception.”
An April 2008 Screen Digest report forecasts that the market for rich media advertising on mobile will reach $2.79 billion by 2012. The report also states that mobile game ad formats will provide a valuable source of innovative marketing opportunities for brands aspiring to connect and interact with their customers1.
âGreystripe is looking to address the lack of advertising standardization in mobile by committing to IAB online formats,â said Michael Chang, CEO and Co-founder of Greystripe. âWe have made it easy for advertisers by removing barriers to execution. Brands like Jeep, RadioShack, New Line Cinema, Rock the Vote and Yahoo! have seen strong results.â

"Canoe" by Canadian artist Peter Fleming is a 20 foot long trough of water resembling a canoe where a gunwale tracking mechanism endlessly paddles forward and back inside the boat. The entire piece is solar powered and was originally built from aluminum, gussets, and bolts so that it was fully collapsible. Check out the link below for some video clips (Quicktime) of it in action.
