There are only a few hours left to enter our CYBER MONDAY contest (and to also get 10% off our robot kits)... we were able to do up a quick code/sale for all our robot kits for today so have at it. It starts at 12:01 am PST 12/1/2008 and ends today at 11:59 pm PST. Use code CYBERM at checkout at the Maker Shed.
Out contest is simple, just post up your version of the "Three laws of robotics" in the comments HERE, make it clever, funny, outrageous. At 11:59pm PST I'll post up a winner. You can post up multiple entries, contest is world-wide. The prize? The new Co-Robot kit we just got in from Japan! Here's a video!
Pictured above, an old photo of when I was running 30 miles a week and spending a lot of time looking through robot dog eyes - it was CYBER MONDAY every.single.day (long story)....

Here's the newest news from F.A.T.; a Tokyo division has been established!
We F.A.T. freaks in Tokyo got together to hack Japan with "Free Art & Technology!" At tokyo.fffff.at, we will be showing Japanese translation of F.A.T. posts, reporting of F.A.T. related applications, and our own reports of free-art development. Check out the members of Toko F.A.T. here. The people section of fffff.at has been translated into Japanese, too!

The makers of the gOS Linux system, Good OS, have now announced their Cloud operating system, which will provide super fast access to web-based applications and services such as Yahoo, Google and Windows Live without having to wait for your computer to boot up.

The Cloud system was demonstrated at the Netbook World Summit on a Gigabyte touchscreen netbook today. We learned that the Cloud system will start to be included along with Windows XP as a part of PC builder’s tablets starting as soon as next year. So, you would use Cloud for basic computing and switch to XP for the programs that require more processor power.
Cloud relies on a web browser and Linux kernel for access to applications in just seconds. There isn’t a wait for the system to boot. But it’s not just emails and websites that can be read using this system. In fact, MP3s and Flash videos are supported by Cloud. More information about the Good OS Cloud operating system will be released at CES 2009.

Now this is pretty cool. Even though it’s only a concept at this point, the Silicon Touch iPhone case is an accessory for your iPhone that’s meant for those who are visually impaired. And the real plus side here is that it doesn’t take away any of the iPhone’s functionality.

The case would work with an accompanying iPhone app, allowing users to feel what they type and what icons they’re pressing. Multi-touch functions are not sacrificed, either, so all of your gestures and swipes will still be recognized.
Why, oh why is it that the coolest items are always just concepts? Despite this question that I always ask, we don’t know much else about the Silicon Touch iPhone case. Hopefully, if there is a big enough market demand for it, it would eventually hit production.

This robot kit has a terrific lumbering gait. The YETI Walking Robot Kit is from Arexx Engineering. He uses two servos for locomotion and runs on a programmable ATmega8 microcontroller. It seems like most of the distributors are European. Has anyone out there gotten a chance to play with one?

Worldchanging covered an important conference on an often-neglected concept:
An international conference on Ecological Safety, held earlier this month in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, called attention to a dangerous sanitation issue by offering an inspiring and feasible solution.
The problem: international donors are still promoting pit latrines... but most families can't afford to pay for safe emptying of the pits... the latrines can become dangerous as a result, often leaking and polluting puddles in nearby streets and gardens, leaking into streams or even leaching into groundwater. Contamination ruins an already-limited clean drinking water supply, and puts the local community, particularly children, at risk for bacterial disease.
A new and more sustainable sanitation system promises to change the game, if advocates can generate the resources and policy action necessary to support it. According to Sascha Gabizon, executive director of WCEF, dry or low-flush urine diverting toilets, combined with natural filtration ponds to purify grey water from sinks and showers, is a much safer sanitation system that can be implemented at a cost similar to that of the latrines.
With toilets accounting for something like 30% of U.S. residential indoor water consumption and over a billion people lacking access to clean drinking water, toilet issues start to become well worth discussing.
Here are some resources to learn a lot more about how we might help build better toilets to save the world (all 3 big, slow pdf's):
1. Smart Sanitation Solutions: Examples of innovative, low-cost technologies for toilets, collection, transportation, treatment and use of sanitation products.
2. Sustainable Sanitation: Bulgarian project referenced in the article cited above. And, with some of the best cover art I've seen:

3. From the Global Dry Toilet Club of Finland (really): A Guide to Sanitation and Hygiene For Those Working In Developing Countries.
