NTT DoCoMo to Develop Phones with Self-Healing Paint

Have you ever scratched your phone? Chances are you have, and you were probably cursing the fact that phones seem to be way too vulnerable. We here at Unwired View love new ideas that could someday innovate the way we use and benefit from mobile phones.

The latest idea is from Japan’s NTT DoCoMo, which has announced plans to license Nissan’s special scratch-resistant paint in order to use the technology on its own mobile phones.

Nissan’s paint is called Scratch Guard and was developed by Nissan alongside the University of Tokyo and Advanced Softmaterials, Inc. Scratch Guard contains a special type of resin that when scratched, is able to self-heal typically overnight (for extreme scratches it can take up to a week).

It probably won’t show up on every phone; the paint will be a value-add feature for future NTT DoCoMo devices, though. It’s doubtful that we’ll see anything similar outside of Japan for a while, but we love this idea and hope that others will follow suit.
