KT hopes to sell up to 500,000 iPhones in Korea

KT, South Korea’s second largest mobile carrier and the only one to distribute the iPhone on the local market (for the moment, at least), expects to sell 100,000 to 500,000 units of Apple’s famous smartphone.

The iPhone will be available via KT starting November 28.

KT didn’t announce the price for which it will sell the iPhone, but analysts believe the handset will be sold for 350,000 to 400,000 KRW ($300 to $345) with a contract agreement and a data plan.

Hwang Sung-jin, analyst at Prudential Investment and Securities, says that if the carrier “offers rate plans ranging from 45,000 won to 65,000 won per month in addition to adequate subsidies for subscribers, stable demand will be created.”

In Japan, about 200,000 iPhones were sold since 2008, while in China (the world’s largest mobile market) 30,000 units have been sold since October 30 this year. These numbers may suggest that KT won’t manage to sell 500,000 iPhones anytime soon, but I guess we’d better wait and see.
