Handset PCB makers see clear bookings through August only
Compeq said bookings in July improved on month, with stronger growth expected to follow in August. The company sources attributed the improvement to a seasonal upturn, growing shipments from leading handset vendors and the sales contribution from a new US-based customer. Present order visibility lasts for 4-6 weeks but visibility for September is still unclear. Therefore, the company is cautious about its performance outlook for the third quarter. Investors estimate that Compeq is likely to post a 5-10% sequential sales growth in the quarter.
Rival Unitech is also seeing an improved bookings status, with the company saying that bookings in July and August are better than April and May. But the company stated that visibility for September is still unclear. The company sources guided that sequential sales growth in the third quarter may be weaker on a yearly basis. The investors estimate that Unitech will see its third-quarter sales grow by 10% on quarter.
In related news, Gartner Dataquest recently revised down its forecast for handset shipments growth for 2008. The research firm projects global handsets shipments to only grow by 10-11% on year, compared with its original growth forecast of 10-15%.
