Virgin America in-flight WiFi test, plus YouTube Live launch, coming up!

SlashGear is taking to the skies later on today, for Virgin America’s WiFi Launch Beta Flight.  The first demonstration of the in-flight internet service, we’ll be brushing aside the complementary rice crackers in favor of surfing the internet.  Then, we’ll be heading straight for the YouTube Live event, to bring you all the details.

slashgear_slashgear-480x320

The flight today is sponsored by HP - thanks for the invite, guys! - and using Aircell hardware to make sure we can check out email, Skype and generally avoid the in-flight movies.  It’s not just a jaunt, though; we’ll also be deciding whether the Virgin America WiFi service is something users should be spending their money on, or whether they should just wait until landing.

We’ll have photos and video as soon as we get into the airport later on today.  Our laptop of choice for the flight will be the new late-2008 MacBook Air, too, so expect some preliminary feedback on that in advance of our full review coming this week. Live streaming of video of the event will be available on QIK.

CEA creates YouTube contest to ease DTV transition

As the date when all TV broadcasts switch to digital approaches, we’re going to hear more and more about it. That seems to already be the case and now CEA is launching a contest on YouTube called Digital TV: Convert Now! that’s meant to help people convert their old analog sets to digital.

picture-2

The promo video for the contest, which you can watch below, features country group Whiskey Falls as they give a brief explanation of what the DTV transition means and some of your options. Of course, the first option listed is to buy a new HDTV. That CEA sure is crafty!

It also encourages people to help out their friends and family with this transition. It seems clear they know not everyone uses YouTube and this is meant more to make people aware that others might not be aware of the DTV transition. You can view the official rules and learn more about the contest at the Digital TV: Convert Now! website.

Sony Ericsson and 3 UK are welcoming Halloween with The DarkSide campaign

So Halloween is coming next week. That’s great. To celebrate the spooky holiday, as well as the release of Sony Ericsson W595, 3 UK and the Swedish-Japanese handset manufacturer have come up with a viral advertising campaign that wants to take you and your friends to the dark side.

You are invited to create a video with yourself, but not create it as in film it. You just fill in your details on the W595 The DarkSide website and leave the rest to the campaign’s initiators.

The video featuring you and some “bizarre happenings” will be automatically uploaded to YouTube. You can then send links with it to your friends, to scare the s**t out of them.

There are two playing modes: by email or via Facebook, whichever suits you best.

So what’s the role of W595 here? A vague one, but Sony Ericsson doesn’t omit to mention that the new slider phone has easy access to YouTube. So you can show one of those bizarre videos to anyone if you have the handset with you.

There’s also a prize at the end of The DarkSide viral campaign. The most viewed video (until Halloween ends) wins a brand new Sony Ericsson W595. Not at all a scary thought, right?

this wacky wii ad will break all of your youtubes

In what can only be a brilliant viral marketing scheme, Wii and YouTube have teamed up to make an advertisement that appears to break YouTube. They employ clever on-screen Flash effects to make it seem like what’s happening in the game is destroying the YouTube website!

The screenshots don’t do it justice. You can’t quite get the effect of gold coins flying out at you and text bars going all wonky. You should definitely click through to see the video for yourself.

Once again, Wii, a tip of the hat to your brilliance. If only I could vote Wii for President, the choice would be so much easier.

Google starts to test ads on Youtube’s mobile site

The rather simplistic and minimalist mobile version of Youtube’s web site is getting a redesign. Not necessarily something major, just a little something to make room-for ads.

That’s right, Youtube’s mobile web site will now be served up with ads, but only for users in the US and Japan-at least for now. The ad-ridden mobile version of Youtube will be tested for a while before the whole thing rolls out to other parts of the world, most likely.

I don’t know about you, but I already find Youtube’s mobile site a bit stuffed. I don’t know where they’re going to find the space to put the ads in. But well, if Google does this to provide us, the end-user, “with the most valuable and effective mobile experience possible,” then I’m all for it.

TiVo gets YouTube in latest 9.4 update

TiVo recently began rolling out its Summer (9.4) software update to its PVR subscribers and, while the company initially kept quiet about it, they have included YouTube video playback.  Available to Series 3 and TiVo HD users, the functionality will begin to show up as early as July 18th but it will take 2-3 weeks before all boxes have been updated.

The YouTube app for TiVo uses H.264 encoded video, unlike the MPEG-2 TiVo currently renders.  Functionality includes viewing of the Most Recent, Featured, Most Viewed, Top Rated and Top Favorite, as well as search, but users currently log into their YouTube accounts.

Dave Zatz also confirmed that the upcoming CinemaNow movie rentals TiVo is set to offer will be MPEG-2, and as such viewable to Series 2 box owners as well as the more recent, H.264-compatible series.
