geiger counter pc casemod can’t play half-life

Before all you budding nuclear physicists attempt to correct me, I know this isn’t truly a Geiger Counter. It’s actually one of those Cold-War era Ion Chamber radiation detectors. But that’s not what most of us think, so I’ll stick with the more familiar Geiger name. Regardless, this computer casemod won’t actually detect radioactivity, but the nuke gauge will kick in when you power on the PC with a flip of the original sensitivity dial.

Geiger Counter Casemod

Because of the cramped quarters inside the box, the Russian-built Civil Defense computer isn’t very powerful — running an anemic 300 MHz CPU, 256MB of RAM and a 4GB Compact Flash card for storage. Heck, it probably isn’t even powerful enough to play the original Fallout or Half-Life. But with the proper Atari 800 emulator installed, it might be able to play a game of SCRAM (Remember gaming genius Chris Crawford? Ah, memories.)

robot drummer has plenty of rhythm

This little yellow robot does one thing really well. He likes to play drums. What’s funny about the little guy is that he likes to play music on just about any surface other than an actual drum.

Yellow Drum Machine Robot

The Yellow Drum Machine drives around the room looking for things that might make an interesting sound when tapped on. If he likes what he hears, he starts going to town with a little riff. Once he’s bored, he moves on, looking for something else to make noise with.

As the ‘bot drives around, he avoids obstacles until it detects an object that looks like it might be a nice musical surface, takes some audio samples, and if he finds the sound to be pleasing, composes a little matching rhythm using the original sound sample and plays a little song.

rubber duckie gets remote control

Who says you can’t take your electronic gadgets in the bathtub with you? The latest in rubber duckie technology lets you steer your fine feathered friend around the tub from afar.

Rubber Duckie Remote Controlled

Using a wireless RF transmitter, you can make the yellow aquatic bird tool around as you splish-splash in your bath. A pair of motorized propellers moves the little guy through the water, and let you steer duckie to the left, right, forwards or backwards. A quick 5-minute charge will give you about 15-minutes of bathtime fun. And yes, both the duck and controller are waterproof, so there’s no worries about electrocuting yourself.

The R/C Rubber Duck is available from I Want One of Those for £14.99 (appx. $26.98 USD). Quack.

Messaging toaster burns notes into your breakfast

Filed under:

For being one of the most brilliantly simple electronic devices ever to exist, the humble toaster certainly draws a lot of design attention, and this messaging toaster from Sascha Tseng certainly adds in a feature we never knew we wanted — until now. We’re not 100 percent clear on exactly how it works, but using the supplied stylus to doodle on the top lid of the toaster will result in a scorchmark-and-bread rendering of your masterpiece. Not exactly the most covert way of sending messages to your family, perhaps, but since when has practicality been important in toaster concept design?
