New Xbox Experience Leak disables it until release date

Whenever people find out about leaked products or demos, many want to jump right on it. That’s exactly the case with the New Xbox Experience. But it turns out installing the leaked files will lock you out of Live until the NXE is set to be released!

ss-games_540x303-480x269

Many that have downloaded the leaked version of the NXE, have found themselves completely locked out of Xbox Live. And since the release date for the new experience is set for November 19th, you’re looking at about three weeks of lock down. That’s a long time to go without Live!

So take all of this as a word of warning. Don’t install the new leak unless you’re okay with not being able to access Xbox Live for the next couple of weeks and you’re willing to run the risk of being banned by Microsoft. Of course, there’s been no word about bans yet, but it is always a possibility.

Microsoft Faced with a Class Action Suit over RRoD

The notorious Red Ring of Death (RRoD) which has hounded Xbox 360 for quite a long time has finally got a legal recognition. A class action suit has been filed in California against Microsoft alleging them of selling defective consoles in order to compete with PS3 and Wii.

The lawsuit cites articles from various publications where the RRoD was already reported and says that Microsoft already knew as many as 50% of the consoles were vulnerable with the overheating problem.

If the lawsuit seeks a win over the Redmond giant, they could be directed to refund the money to all Xbox users in California.

Xbox 360 games to be ‘forward-compatible’ with next-gen console?

microsoft_xbox_360Latest Microsoft gaming rumor on the block is the surprising idea that the company is planning forward-compatibility for Xbox 360 games played on the third-generation Xbox.  Where backward-compatibility is a console’s ability to play titles from a previous generation of hardware (e.g. original Xbox games played on the Xbox 360, either through hardware or software emulation), forward-compatibility would be gameplay, graphics, control and other features of a title “unlocked” by virtue of the next-gen console’s improved abilities.

That would mean Xbox 360 titles on the next-gen Xbox - let’s call it the Xbox 720, though obviously that won’t be the actual name - would have improved draw distance, higher frame rates and faster speed, together with taking advantage of new controller functionality and other hardware developments.  You could even access new levels via DLC.

Microsoft are no-news policy on the Xbox 720 release date, but the latest educated-speculation tips it between 2010 and 2012.  According to the sources behind this talk of forward-compatibility, the company is in the final “testing the waters” stage of deciding hardware specifications for the new console.  At that stage it can explore the concept of the Xbox 720 mining new gameplay from existing titles with developers; there’s of course no guarantee that the project will make it past the “under consideration” stage.

Microsoft sues DHL for damaged Xbox 360s

Microsoft is playing hardball to DHL who had the responsibility to ship their Xbox 360s. DHL has been sued by the Redmond giant seeking in excess of $2 million in damages after a train derailment which happened in October last year. A total of 21,600 Xbox consoles were damaged in that incident and the case filing is a result after DHL failed to compensate Microsoft for this huge loss.

Xbox Slim compact media extender mod

Although the original Xbox has superseded by the 360, it’s still in demand for general hacking and media extender duties.  Lurking under the TV, though, its ominous black bulk does nothing for your living room aesthetics; that’s why modder Coca627 broke out the Dremel and crafted a far smaller custom case for his Xbox, with a 60-percent reduction in volume over the original.  He’s calling it the Xbox Slim.

More photos, plus a video demo of the Xbox Slim, after the cut

Out went the standard optical drive and in goes a slimline DVD/CD-R intended for laptops.  There’s also a 60GB 2.5-inch hard-drive for local storage and the receiver for a Logitech wireless controller.  New Iceberg4 Pro Chip Cooling fans reduce not only noise but bulk.

Software-wise, the XBMC media center dashboard project provides much of the new functionality, plus there are SNES, Sega Megadrive and NeoGeo emulators for classic gaming.  In fact the one big omission, of course, is Xbox 360 gaming.  No word on how much the project cost, but considering you can pick up an original Xbox including controllers and a number of games for well under $100 on eBay, it could come in for much less than the price of a new 360.

xbox classic slims down to fighting weight

While the original Xbox is nary a memory in most of our minds, it’s still a popular console for hacking together media centers and other homebrew apps. But the old black behemoth of a case sure needs an update. So when I saw this custom Xbox build out, I thought to myself, “that’s just what the doctor ordered”.

Modder Coca627 refactored his original Xbox into what he’s coined the “Xbox Slim”, a lean, mean fighting machine, amped up to the max.

To put it in perspective, the original Xbox measured 12.5″(w) x 4″(h) x 10.5″(d), while the Xbox Slim is just 10.2″(w) x 2.3″(h) x 9″(d), a reduction in volume of 60%. And the Slim weighs in at a svelte 4 pounds, less than half the weight of the  ponderous 8.5 pound bulk of the original Xbox.

The Xbox Slim is decked out with a brand spaking new DVD/CD-R slim combo drive, and loaded up with a 2.5″ 60GB hard drive for storage, and built-in Wi-Fi networking. Coca even managed to integrate a hidden receiver for his Logitech wireless controller.

Under the hood, the system managed to slim down thanks to improved cooling, courtesy of a pair of heavy duty Iceberg4 Pro Chip Cooling fans.

The system is modded to run a wide variety of nifty applications including the XBMC media center dashboard and emulators for SNES, Sega Megadrive, NeoGeo and more.

Now if only he could get it to run Xbox 360 games :)
