ECC mashup touchscreen hacked with Wiimotes: Video demo

When mashup artists The ECC (Evolution Control Committee) needed a faster way to trigger any of hundreds of loops in their live shows, they ditched the mouse and instead hacked together a rear-projection touchscreen.  Rather than some of the DIY multitouch displays we’ve seen before, the ECC setup uses two Wiimote controllers and a pair of custom LED gloves.

The setup is based on an earlier project by Johnny Lee, and relies on two Wiimote controllers fixed either side of the projector.  On the gloves there’s a thimble with an infrared LED (for the Wiimote to see) and a blue LED (for the user to see); pressing the thumb and forefinger together lights up both and the Wiimote translates that into a mouse-click.

Those clicks activate different samples and loops in music app Ableton Live.  It’s far faster to jab at different elements than it is to mouse between them, hence the ECC can create their overlaid music in real-time.

Presenting the Wii64

I have no idea why would anyone want this but nonetheless here it is. Someone decided to stick in his retro Nintendo 64 console in a Wii chassis. In all Wii glory, a lucky person will be able to play all the lovely N64 games on this ‘one of a kind’ Wii64. For added coolness, the blue light works when the console is turned on. Currently auctioned at eBay with the bid standing at $152.50.

Head over here for more details and pictures.

Wii64 is one crazy backwards mod

Wii64 is one crazy backwards modSome mods don’t make a whole lot of sense. Why tear out the innards of your Wii, just to put an N64 inside? An SNES in a Wii would still be questionable, but at least that’s an SNES. This inbred Nintendo creation is dubbed the “Wii64″, and keeps the Wii’s blue lights lighting up whenever it is turned on. The Wii64 is currently on eBay, where bidding began with $49.99. It’s somehow up to $64. What we need are more console guitars.

Gamestop will have Nintendo Wii on shelves for Black Friday

A lot of us are going to be chipping away at the old Christmas list in just a few weeks. Some items are going to a little harder to find than others. One item that is still in very high demand is Nintendo’s Wii gaming console. The questions is will there be enough for this years holiday season?

wii-shortage-480x319

A few months ago Gamestop made the comment that they will have plenty to go around this year. One Gamestop executive has pointed out that one downtown San Francisco store currently has them in stock. He also said that they had secured enough Wii consoles that he was confidant that the hard-to-find gaming system would be in stock till the first weeks of December.

It sounds like they are very sure that there will be no shortage for Black Friday. If you look on Amazon.com you will find them in stock as well. It looks like Nintendo has finally managed to get production levels up to where they need to be for the holiday season.  There has not been a noticeable decline in demand for Nintendo’s leading game console.

Exarstick Arcade Stick for the Wii

Exarstick Arcade Stick for the WiiSome of us who are old enough to remember arcades would prefer an arcade stick for the Wii as opposed to the fancy motion control you young whipper-snappers are using today. And while I’m at it, you can get the hell off my lawn and stop playing your music so loud. This controller is pretty close to the arcade experience, thanks to its shape and size.

The Exarstick comes with Minus and Plus buttons which are mapped to buttons on the top row, matching the Select and Start buttons on the SNES controller. The only gripes we are hearing are the ones you might expect, regarding its lightweight which makes things a little awkward when the game gets intense.

EA Sports announces Active for Wii

EA Sports today announced their version of Wii Fit better known as EA Sports Active. Good thing about EA’s offering is that it does not require any additional peripheral. Active can played without the need of balance board. However, the Active expands a little in terms of exercises if a user happens to use balance board with the game. EA Sports will bundle the game with two straps (for holding Wii Remote while running), resistance band (for rigorous exercise) and a nutritional booklet.

EA Sports Active is complementary to Nintendo’s Wii Fit because EA reckons that their exercises are more inclined to the Western way while Wii Fit includes eastern style exercises like stretching and balancing. The game is expected to launch in Spring next year carrying a price tag of $59.99.

On a side note, an interview of Peter Moore, President with GameSpot reveals that EA might also be incorporating its Active technology in other games in the future. This means that we can now run and kick in the air while playing FIFA on Wii?

Check out the trailer below.
