Top Social Networks

The social networking sites numbers for the US are in and the year to year comparisons are pretty telling.  MySpace is down 1% while FaceBook is up 77%.  The biggest movement is by some new comers, namely Fubar.com who grew by, get this, 3272217%.  Fubar is billed as “the first online bar and happy hour,” with free well drinks all night long.  OK, I made up that last bit.

Yahoo! OnePlace exciting or will Google copy this too?

Section: Web, Web 2.0, Websites

Yahoo OnePlaceYahoo! announced it’s new OnePlace service that will be live in Q2 of this year.  At it’s basic level, OnePlace allows you to access bookmarks and various links anywhere on any machine or mobile device.

The example Yahoo! uses is a trip you are about to take.  You do research beforehand, noting some places you’d like to check out.  When you arrive at your destination, instead of relying on memory or a new search, you just look up those links you saved and you are good to go.

Sure you could send yourself an email of links but…switching back and forth from email to web browser on my Windows Mobile phone is painful.  As is the internet but that is another post.

Is it me or does this strike you as something very easily copy-able if not already possible using iGoogle?

Facebook to add an easy way to permanently delete your account

Section: Web, Web 2.0, Websites

Facebook

Hounded by the growing number of irate users about its absurd privacy policies, the social network drama queen Facebook said it will add a one-step option enabling users to easily and permanently delete their accounts.

Currently, many Facebook users are complaining about the deactivation option because it still retains personal information on the site’s servers. In defense, Facebook claims many users are quite fickle and they tend to come back to reactivate their accounts for various reasons.

Last Monday, the fast growing company has added an alternative wherein users must notify its Facebook staff via e-mail for deletion of their accounts. Unfortunately, there are some complaints that it failed to remove some accounts despite getting in touch with the company’s customers service. I suppose this is the main reason why the company is looking for another option to delete these accounts permanently.

Now, there is a Facebook group called “How to permanently delete your Facebook account” which acts as the unofficial guide for its 7,000 confused members on the proper account deletion process.

In the era where social networks represent our permanent records online, these companies must be more sensitive about privacy issues and devise ways to help users protect their rights. Otherwise, they will have to face a community of outspoken mob.

Facebook now in Spanish

Section: Web, Web 2.0, Websites

Facebook Spanish

For the first time since its launch, controversial social networking site Facebook is now befriending non-English users with the launch of its own Spanish language version. Kick off is on Monday. Facebook users situated in Spanish-speaking countries will view the site in their native tongue. In case you prefer Spanish, visit your account page, click on the “language” tab, and set it to be Español.

Today, more than 2.4 million active users are living in Spain and Latin America. By breaking the language barrier, it can attract new users and convert users of other social networks in Spanish version such as MySpace, hi5 and Orkut. This is just the beginning of the company’s expansion to international territories. Facebook’s strategy and operations vice president Matt Cohler confirms that French and German versions will be launched in April. All these efforts are geared towards expanding its audience and keep up with its archrival MySpace which is already available in 13 different languages such as Japanese, Italian, German, French and Spanish.
