Twitter may be ad-ridden soon

Section: Web, Web 2.0, Websites

Twitter

If you were busy updating your Twitter this morning, you might have noticed that the service was running a bit slow. That’s because the creatures inside the Twitter are currently mulling over the possibilities of adding advertising to the site, weighing their options, which are actually pretty much “advertise or die” at this point. You might not realize it yet but Twitter has helped everybody with their service except for itself. Because aside from the occasional round of VC funding (the last of which was on July 2007, at $5.7 million), Twitter has never really made anything off their wonderfully addictive online service. Its only option may be to put ads on its site, which would in all certainty become the topic of many a debate since users have so far been using it 100% ad-free. For 2 years now, actually. So while I personally won’t mind having ads on Twitter, since there’s quite plenty of free space on the sidebars anyway, I think a lot of people would still find it hard to kick the habit of twitting in an ad-free Twitter. How about you? How would you feel if Twitter suddenly placed paid ads on its pages? Add your answers in the comments!

Have lots of Twitter friends, don’t use your account, why not sell it?

Section: Web, Web 2.0, Websites

Andrew Baron Twitter account for sale

Well it had to happen, someone had to be the first, after all we have seen other social service accounts hit the open market, but Andrew Baron of Rocketboom fame has put his Twitter account up for sale.

Andrew was kind enough to offer up an explanation to his loyal followers:

I really love my Twitter account but I feel like I haven’t been using it the way I want to. Quite honestly, I feel sorry for all of my followers because they wind up with my tweets in their timelines and I haven’t been able to utilize the medium the way I want to. I also participate in another Twitter account over on Rocketboom so I’m thinking I’ll post more over there and start up a new account to do what I want to do next.

Andrew Baron has around 1,500 followers and as of this writing (4/13/2008 at 9:15 am) the auction currently sits at $510 after 26 bids. My question is, who thinks this will be worth that kind of money? Twitter accounts, especially when based from someone’s name seem, well kind of personal, I wonder just how many subscribers will remain after the new owner begins to post. Just in case you want to follow the action, you can check out the auction over at eBay.

Yahoo needs cash: brings Google ads in

Section: Web, Web 2.0, Websites

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Yahoo is in talks to bring Google ads in on a trial basis.  The trial will allow Google ads to be served on up to 3% of Yahoo’s search queries.  Interesting.

Both Yahoo and Google released statements saying they are not married and they are not sure this is love.  They are just going on a date and that is it.  Stop reading into this.  That is the conversation I am sure my daughter will have with me one day.  Funny, it works here too.

Yahoo is clearly signaling investors that they are up for pissing off Microsoft.  Microsofts response has been ours seems to be the only game in town for Yahoo, though investor Legg Mason (no relation) has shored up support for Yahoo should things get ugly.

More as it happens or doesn’t happen.

Facebook expands, plans to adds 22 more languages

Section: Web, Web 2.0, Websites

Facebook

Facebook continues to prove that it’s a social network like no other by using a new user-powered translation engine for their site. They’re going to use this to add 22 more languages to Facebook so that it will be accessible to more people across the world. Currently, Facebook is only available in four main languages: English, French, German and Spanish. This move will no doubt add to the site’s overall visibility and accessibility.

As mentioned previously, the translation engine will be a user-powered, so if you’re interested in contributing to Facebook’s expansion, you may do so by going through the simple application process here. You need to be a member before you can actually see that linked page, so if you’re not, don’t forget to sign-up.

Facebook adds privacy controls, further confirms chat feature

Section: Web, Web 2.0, Websites

Facebook introduces privacy controls finally, chat feature to be added

Sixty-seven million Facebookers can now control what their contacts see. The social network which rose fast to popularity in 2007 introduced new privacy controls Wednesday. The new settings will allow members to control what their family and friends can access, which means that managing friends’ list is now possible.

Officially launched more than a year ago, Facebook first started as a social network site for Harvard University way back in 2004 and soon found it way to universities and offices and now the world. According to a Facebook statement, only 25 percent of the users are currently using the network’s default access settings. With the new privacy controls, Facebook users can create as much as 100 different ‘contacts lists’ to organize their friends when such filter enables only the chose friends can view one’s messages or a part of one’s profile.

Facebook has received privacy complaints especially after the controversial Beacon can be turned off by the users but it is only now that the Silicon Valley company has finally focused on the users’ request. Facebook’s VP of Product Management, Matt Cohler noted that what they are facing is normal in SV. It’s a “classic Silicon Valley dilemma” of making something for most people and at the same time, working on the privacy issues.

In the very near future, Facebook is also set to launch Facebook Chat, a web-based chat feature that will work similar to online chat service Meebo. According to Facebook the chat “will be introduced in a matter of weeks.”

If Bebo is worth $850 million, how can Facebook be worth $15 billion?

Section: Web, Web 2.0, Websites

AOL announced its intention to purchase social networking site Bebo for $850 million prompting many to wonder what exactly was Microsoft thinking buying a 1.6% stake in Facebook for $240 million.  Using some advanced math skills, that puts the suspected value of Facebook at $15 billion.  But is that fair?

No.  In the Microsoft deal, Microsoft got 1.6% of the company but also got something more, a lot more.  They secured advertising rights until 2011.  Clearly, Microsoft values the advertising relationship very highly as a Facebook of$15 billion makes all of our scalps quite itchy.  A lot of bloggers missed this important facet of the Microsoft deal, but not this guy.

Who is Bebo?

With a total membership of more than 40 million worldwide, Bebo is a global social media network which combines community, self-expression and entertainment to enable its users to consume, create, discover and share content. Bebo is one of the leading social networks in the UK, and is ranked number one in Ireland and New Zealand, and number three in the U.S. Its users are heavily engaged and view an average of 78 pages per usage day.

Yeah, thats right, #1 in techy Ireland, take that MySpace!  AOL is working to cast itself as an ad platform, the really hot thing to do right now.  This addition will propel AOL audience to roughly 80 million people, which is larger than Facebook’s clan of 67 million, but still smaller than MySpace‘s audience.

Facebook launches user-translated French site

Section: Web, Web 2.0, Websites

Facebook French language version

In the hopes of catching up with its rival social networking site in terms of localizing strategy, Facebook has launched a French language version of its site. The launch followed the successful launch of its German and Spanish language versions a couple of months ago. The French language version of Facebook was made possible by its French speaking members who helped out in translating the site.

Translating Facebook into French was only logical since France is the sixth most active country on Facebook, with the U.S. in the number 1 spot in terms of user base activities. French speaking Facebook users will now have the option to change the language version of the Facebook site they visit. This can be done in their account settings.  But for those members who directly sign onto Facebook, the French language version of the site will be automatically displayed.

Facebook is planning to empower its members in translating the site into other non-English language. Using a strategy popularized by Wikipedia, Facebook is hoping that members whose native language is other than English will contribute in translating the site into their own languages. Any Facebook members can help translate the site into non-English language by adding the translation application into their Facebook profile. All translations to be submitted by members will be approved through voting system by Facebook users themselves.
