Sony Ericsson W980 with Walkman On Top

Sony Ericsson W890 Walkman with 8GB memory and large displaySony Ericsson dropped a new Walkman mobile phone/media player to the market today with the W980, featuring 8GB of internal memory, included headphones and something the company is calling “Walkman On Top”.

The new Walkman On Top is a lot like it sounds. SE put the controls and the display of current playing tracks on the front of the device allowing complete navigation and viewing without having to open up the handset, hence the name “on top”. The new Walkman also comes with built-in stereo speakers and FM transmitter letting users share their tunes directly or through an FM radio on a home or car stereo. Sony Ericsson also wanted to make sure that listening to music alone was clear with quality sound and threw in Stereo Portable Handsfree HPM-77 headset. The headset allows listening to music and the ability to take calls hands free.

The Walkman W980 is a UMTS/HSDPA 2100 GSM/GPRS 850/900/1800/1900 mobile phone measuring 3.6 x 1.8 x 0.7 inches and weighing a modest 3.5 oz. Sony Ericsson says they will have the W980i model available in the U.S. around the third quarter of this year. The HPM-77 headset is expected to be out a little earlier with a release date of around June. No word on pricing at this point.

SNES CD development controller on eBay for a mint

Ah, eBay. Home to some of the rarest, most incredible devices known (and previously unknown) to man. On the docket today is a stupendously rare, unreleased development controller for use with the SNES CD dev kit. Yep, a unreleased controller for an unreleased system — pretty much a collector’s dream. Unfortunately, the controller alone won’t do you very much good beyond hooking you up with unbelievable bragging rights, but unless you’ve got $2,999.99 (at least) to blow, the above picture is close as you’ll get to this treasure.

Nokia E90 meets maker courtesy of 12 gauge shotgun

We think the emphatic “For Parts ONLY” in the description of this well-loved E90’s eBay auction pretty much says it all.

Rare Yoshi edition DS Phat tests your love of Nintendo

Sure, you’ve bought every console since the original NES, monitor forum threads religiously for any Wii bashing, and may even have a Koopa tattoo somewhere on your body, but are you enough of a fanboy to pay $500 for first-generation Nintendo DS emblazoned with a wire-frame cartoon dinosaur? Well apparently eBayer “joedick” is one such individual, whose $480 Buy-It-Now-dollars earned him one of the only 200 “Hot Summer Yoshi” edition DS Phats ever made, which were part of a larger series of six versions available only to Club Nintendo members in 2005. Congratulations, good sir — just remember not to play with it or anything, or you won’t be able to sell it for ten times what you paid a few years down the road.

eBayer wants $15000 for Darth Vader Wii

Filed under:

Yeah, just about anything gets ratcheted up a couple levels on the fantasmical scale if Darth Vader makes a cameo, but seriously, $15,000 for a Dark Side Wii? To be frank, this auction has spoof written all over it, but whatever the case, redferndesign is offering up a “limited edition” (one of four, supposedly) Wii system with a red CD input LED, an all black motif, Darth Vader imprinted on the side and a pair of black Wiimotes / nunchucks. Also of note, the Wiimote pictured must be one of the rarest ever, particularly when you consider the previously nonexistent “x” and “y” buttons and the rectangular power switch. Even if the console (alone) is indeed modded up, there’s no way anyone in their right mind will cough up that much coin, but why not hit the read link and have a laugh at his / her expense?

NES PC up for auction, emulation addicts rejoice

Yeah, the NES PC is old hat, but if you just can’t find the time to create one for yourself, why not pay some diligent soul for their hard work rather than living another month without one? Available via eBay, this finely crafted piece of art won’t crank through any of the latest PC titles, but it comes with plenty of horsepower (and peripherals) to handle all the emulation you can stand. Granted, Americans will have to fork over additional coinage to have it shipped in from France, but flooring a room full of nerds at your forthcoming holiday bash will most certainly make it worthwhile. Check out the auction along with an in-action video at the read link below.

Big tech names sued over voicemail patents

Big tech companies sued over voicemail patentsWhat do AT&T, Apple, Comcast, Cablevision and eBay all have in common? They are all being sued today by Klausner Technologies over visual voicemail patents the company says it owns and which it feels these well known, other companies have not yet requested a patent license for.

The suits were filed by the company which “was founded by Judah Klausner, the inventor of the PDA and electronic organizer.” Klausner Technologies says Cablevision’s Optimum Voicemail, Comcast’s Digital Voice Voicemail, eBay’s Skype Voicemail and AT&T/Apple’s iPhone Visual Voicemail services all violate patents it holds which allow “users to selectively retrieve and listen to voice messages via message inbox displays.”

Klausner is seeking varying damage amounts and future royalties from each of the lawsuits - Cablevision/Comcast/eBay $300 million and AT&T/Apple $360 million. The company reportedly already has issued patent licenses “to various other companies that provide visual voicemail, including Time Warner’s AOL for its AOL Voicemail services and Vonage Holdings for its Vonage Voicemail Plus services,” so it may actually have a legitimate leg to stand on.
