Microsoft announced today that they have released a new test version of their upcoming Windows Vista Service Pack 1 release. Called Windows Vista SP1 RC Refresh 2, the update was made available to approximately 15,000 beta testers. According to Microsoft, SP1 is still on track to be finalized this quarter although the company would not commit to releasing the update this quarter as it depends on whether the quality of the release is up to snuff. For those of you who could care less about Windows Vista, Microsoft is also actively testing Service Pack 3 for Windows XP. The company released Refresh 3 to their SP3 release candidate on Wednesday and expects to have that released sometime during the first half of this year - yet with the same caveats of Vista SP1. It’ll be ready when it’s ready…

The final December video game sales numbers are in and Nintendo won the console sales race for the month of December. According to market research firm NDP, Nintendo sold 1.35 million Wii’s during the month of December while Microsoft sold a commendable 1.26 million Xbox 360 consoles. Sony held up the rear with 798,000 PlayStation 3 consoles for the month of December.
In terms of total installed base here in the US, Microsoft leads the way with 9.2 million units (it helps that Microsoft launched the Xbox 360 a year earlier than the rest). Nintendo has 7.4 million owners here in the US while Sony has 3.3 million.
While PS3 sales have certainly picked up over the last several months (heck I even bought one), the older PS2 is still outselling its newer more advanced sibling. The PS2 sold more than 1.1 million units in December compared to the aforementioned 798,000 PS3 units.
One other important note - it’s all about content. Nintendo’s Super Mario Galaxy was certainly helping to drive Wii sales (although a lot of consumers simply want a Wii since it’s 1) cheap and 2) fun) while Call of Duty 4, Halo 3, and Assassin’s Creed was helping the Xbox 360.

LaptopMag has published a review of Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac Special Media Edition here on their website. Special Media Edition is one of three different Office 2008 versions. The other two versions are Office 2008 for Mac Home and Student Edition and Office 2008 for Mac. The basic differences are as follows. Office 2008 for Mac Home and Student Edition comes with Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Entourage. Office 2008 for Mac adds Microsoft Server Exchange Support and Automator Actions for Workflows in Microsoft Office. Finally, Special Media Edition adds Microsoft Expression Media tot the mix. Here’s what LaptopMag thinks of the new edition for the Mac platform:
Office for Mac 2008 Special Media Edition is an excellent work suite geared toward power users who will delve into every feature and explore every nook and cranny of the robust package. Casual users who don’t want to shell out $499 could make do with the $149 Student and Home Edition or the very capable (and more wallet-friendly) $79 iWork ‘08. We are left wondering, though, why Microsoft doesn’t make such a fun and visually appealing suite for Windows users.
