ASUS unveils R700 GPS with realistic 3D maps

ASUS R700 GPS device with 3D mapsASUS has a new, very cool looking GPS they are bringing to market with among the many nice features has actual textured, realistic 3D landmarks in major areas which display along the route to help make navigating tricky intersections a little easier. The ASUS R700 also rotates the display as you drive to give the driver a perspective from the direction they are going. The device comes with the recently popular wide 4.3¡È LCD touchscreen display and measures a mere half-inch thick.

The R700 also houses Bluetooth features to handle hands free calling, answer calls and even read out SMS messages. As many GPS devices it also will handle playing MP3 music files, videos and displays pictures. Sound from the device for the multimedia, driving directions and phone conversations can be pumped through the cars FM stereo with the built-in FM transmitter. If that¡¯s not enough ASUS has another model - the R700t - that features TMC (Traffic Message Channel) built-in to inform you of traffic delays or weather conditions along your route and suggest an alternative.

ASUS hasn¡¯t announced a price for the R700 yet but we¡¯re thinking it will be a little on the higher end. They also have not been clear on a target geographical market although at least a Europe release appears to be in the cards at this point.

CSN-7040 and CIN-7000, World¡¯s First PNDs with tactile feedback

CIN-7000.JPG

Those lucky Koreans always get to taste new technology before anybody else and the CSN-7040 is no exception. Ready to be launched in Korea by a company called CTT-Net, the CSN-7040 is the first portable navigation device (PND) to incorporate Immersion¡¯s TouchSense system, which enables tactile feedback on touchscreens. The CIN-7000 is a built-in car navigation system and boasts of the same TouchSense technology. Among other features, both the navigation units sport a 7-inch touchscreen and a DMB receiver for satellite downloads. The TouchSense system provides a distinct tactile confirmation of any selection on the touchscreen, improving usability while also enhancing safety, in case of car navigation devices, by reducing glance-time while driving.

Get ready for more devices in a myriad of fields ranging from mobile phones to gaming systems with TouchSense as Immersion informs us that LG, Nokia, Samsung, 3M Touch Systems have all obtained licenses for TouchSense and VibeTonz, which is the same technology for mobile devices. Incidentally, Samsung has already used Immersion¡¯s VibeTonz system on its F700 cell phone.

Chopper gets Intel mobile computing treatment

Car PCs are cool, but re-fit that idea to a chopper and it comes out way cooler. I mean, this bike is what you get when you combine the efforts of Intel, OCC (Orange County Choppers), and Black Diamond.

Those three are pretty much the best at what they do, and as such the three of them coming together is near epic. The PC on board is all-weather, and can also withstand the vibrations and movement of the bike itself, but wait until you hear everything the computer can do.

It has a fingerprint recognition system that acts as the ignition, no key required, then there is a digital dashboard that not only brings you all sorts of technical data both on the bike and the computer, but it is also good for entertainment and even offers up web access. Instead of rear-view mirrors, there are a couple of LCDs and a pair of rear mounted cameras that serve the same purpose, this thing has Bluetooth, WiFi, and GPS and can do a lot with all of those. The SwitchBack PC, which is the computer in this bike, will cost you between six and ten thousand dollars, and then you have to buy a bike to have it all mounted to.
