Sony announces another notebook battery recall

Sony has announced yet another notebook battery recall affecting approximately 35,000 notebook battery packs in the U.S. and an additional 65,000 units sold worldwide. The recall involves notebook systems sold by several PC manufacturers using Sony 2.15Ah lithium ion cell batteries.  40 incidents have been reported worldwide involving overheating of these batteries – some of which included smoke and/or flames. Sony believes the incidents were related to “manufacturing line adjustments made from October 2004 till June 2005. According to DigiTimes, affected notebook systems come from HP, Toshiba, and Dell. Here’s a breakdown of affected models:

HP models:

Toshiba models:

Sony batteries recalled on several laptop models

10-20-08-eltb026k_bigTalk about a super bummer. Looks like we have another laptop battery recall situation on our hands. In fact, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission has announced a recall of 35,000 laptop batteries manufactured by Sony.

And the reason is what you would expect. It seems the Lithium-ion batteries have the tendency to overheat, catch on fire and pose a burn hazard to people. And this is no joke. Apparently, 19 people have already reported problems with overheating. 17 reports involved actual flames and 2 people received mild burns from the faulty batteries.

While the recall is merely voluntary at the moment, it wouldn’t hurt to give the list of affected laptops a good perusal, which includes HP, Compaq, Dell and Toshiba laptops. I don’t know about you, but I wouldn’t want my laptop battery to suddenly burst into flames. Just doesn’t sound fun to me.

Toshiba Satellite NB100 netbook hands-on suggests cramped controls

Toshiba’s NB100 netbook (aka the NB105) may not step outside the box with its spec sheet, but that won’t stop buyers being drawn to the reliable brand name.  TechRadar had a brief hands-on with the NB100 recently, and found that while the 120GB available hard-drive space is capacious and the Ubuntu OS smooth with its 512MB of RAM, the keyboard was smaller than on rival machines.

toshiba_nb100_netbook_1-480x360

That’s not necessarily a hanging offence if the netbook overall is more compact, but the Toshiba has wasted space around the edges that could’ve been used to accommodate a larger ‘board.  The trackpad, too, is a little on the small side, with the buttons particularly thin; at least, though, they’re underneath the ’pad rather than on either side of it.

Both Windows XP and Ubuntu Linux versions will be on offer, the latter only in gloss black while the former will have silver and gold casings as options.  Battery life is suggested as four hours, but that’s so-far untested; TechRadar do say that those familiar with Toshiba laptops will be quickly at home on the NB100, which could mean a lot if you’re looking to replace your older machine with something cheap and more portable, and want to get up to speed without delay.  The cramped keyboard is a big black mark, however, and could be the Toshiba’s undoing compared to rivals such as the Samsung N10.
