TiVo deny Amazon HD imminent

thumb_amazon_hd_tivo_streaming-480x360After a non-functioning HD option appeared on Amazon’s On Demand video service for TiVo subscribers, the obvious assumption was that the content provider was planning an imminent launch.  Things, however, may not be so clear cut.  In a statement made to SlashGear, TiVo are now denying any such launch is planned.

“The Amazon HD link pulled in screengrabs has already (or soon will be) removed.  TiVo is continually testing different screen presentations and options for subscribers, but at this time we have nothing to announce, and don’t expect to making an announcement on this subject in the near future” TiVo spokesperson

According to the DVR company, the “Available in High Definition” option is simply part of a test the company carried out, and not a sign that HD streams are soon to be available.  While we’ve been unable to confirm this at time of writing, the menu item itself should already have been removed.

A skeptic might suggest that TiVo are backtracking in order to keep a launch date under control, however our contact assures us that there really is no intention of announcing an Amazon high-def service.  It looks like TiVo Amazon subscribers may have to wait a little longer for their HD fix.

Amazon HD streaming coming to TiVo?

A prematurely added menu item seems to have confirmed that Amazon will be offering high-definition content on TiVo.  The new option - which has appeared in the normal Amazon Video On Demand menu - currently does nothing when selected, but presumably it will soon offer a list of titles that can be streamed in HD.

Amazon’s On Demand service has been available to TiVo users since July 2007, with streaming content from the retailers “Unbox” service.  Up until now, however, there’s only been standard-definition movies on offer.

It’s uncertain how long download times will be for high-definition content, with the extra data involved.  Also unknown is Amazon’s pricing for the new HD movies.  However the appearance of the menu option suggests that we’ll find out those answers sooner rather than later.

TiVo launches mobile web site

TiVo has been on a deal-cutting and service-launching spree lately. Their latest move? Launching a new mobile web site in beta that lets subscribers search for and record TV shows using only their cellphones. The new mobile phone-optimized web site is called TiVo Mobile, and anyone with an Internet-enabled phone will be able to access it.

Scheduling can be availed of those who already have TiVo and a Series2 or Series3 set-top box, while the entire site will be free for any visitor to use in searching for shows by actor or director names, titles or keywords. The best part is, the service is provided for free.

Daily Recommendations and Most Popular sections are also open to all subscribers and non-subscribers alike. Plus, TiVo’s popular “If you like this…” tool will be present to offer users a new way to discover shows that match their tastes.

If you can’t wait to try out TiVo Mobile on your handheld, do it now by going to m.tivo.com on your mobile phone’s web browser.

Netflix to stream movies and TV shows to TiVo DVRs

TiVo and Netflix Team UpOnline movie rentals are one of the most convenient ways for movie fans to get their favorite films without leaving the house. The catch is that many of the newest releases aren’t available for streaming rentals. Netflix offers a streaming on demand library of 12,000 movies and TV shows to its subscribers.

Several hardware devices will allow Netflix members to access the streaming content including the Xbox 360 and some DVD players. Netflix and TiVo announced today that TiVo DVR subscribers would be able to access the streaming content library over certain TiVo DVRs.

Compatible DVRs include the TiVo Series 3, HD, and HD XL devices. In addition to a TiVo, device and subscription users will need a Netflix membership as well. The new service is being tested in a few thousand homes across the country according to the companies. The full nationwide service is expected to debut in December.

Comcast’s notification to Subscriber

Dear Valued Customer:

As a part of a system upgrade in your area this fall, we are introducing an exciting new way of delivering video programming to your home, called Switched Digital Video (SDV).

Currently our system sends all channels simultaneously, all the time, whether they are being viewed or not. SDV is a two-way video technology that lets us deliver individual channels over our fiber optic network at the moment you tune to them. This new technology will allow us to expand the services we offer our customers, including by providing more high-definition programming and faster internet speeds.

Because SDV is a two-way interactive technology, you will not be able to view SDV channels using one-way devices such as your TiVo equipment without some additional assistance. To ensure that you will be able use all the features of your TiVo equipment and enjoy all the channels you currently receive, Comcast, in partnership with TiVo, has developed a special tuning adapter to use with your TiVo equipment.

Starting on October 6, 2008, you can bring this letter to one of your local Comcast payment centers at:

[centers vary by area]

where we will give you a tuning adapter at no additional cost. Or, you can call us at 1-800-COMCAST and refer to “the TiVo letter,” and we will schedule an appointment for a technician to visit your home to install it for free. Representatives are available by phone 24/7 to assist with any questions you may have.

Please refer to the FAQ section of this letter for more information on SDV. Remember, you can reach us 24 hours a day, seven days a week at 1-800-COMCAST or chat with us online at www.comcast.com.

Thank you for being a Comcast customer!

TiVo on your PC via Nero’s LiquidTV | TiVo PC app

Nero LiquidTV

Ever wish you could bring the TiVo user interface to the PC platform? Well soon you’ll be able to do so thanks to the upcoming Nero LiquidTV | TiVo PC package. LiquidTV | TiVo PC is essentially another DVR application for the Windows OS except this one happens to bring along the famed TiVo user interface. If you’re one to record and watch TV content on your desktop PC, then you definitely might be interested in this package.

Major features of the Nero LiquidTV | TiVo PC package include the following:

Now keep in mind - this isn’t exactly a full on replacement of Windows Media Center. The Nero app won’t manage your music or photo collection for you like Windows Media Center can. However, if you’re just interested in recording television shows and having a near endless amount of storage space for TV shows, then the LiquidTV app is certainly something you should consider (along with Media Center and any number of other competing DVR applications). Now if you MUST have the TiVo interface, then heck.. this is your only way to go on the PC platform.

products-liquidtv-screen02-640

As this PC Mag review notes, LiquidTV is not a replacement for the TiVo DVR device. This is a package that’s designed for folks who are ok with the notion of watching and recording TV on their PCs. Also - remember that LiquidTV supports OTA ATSC which means you won’t be able to record premium HD channels unless you hook up a cable set-top box to your PC (you’ll also record lower quality video via S-Video).

Speaking of the PC Mag review, here’s what they thought of it.

Nero’s LiquidTV brings the top-notch TiVo interface and all its talents to your PC. While it’s not a replacement for a traditional TiVo DVR, it’s a solid attempt at convergence between your computer and your living-room entertainment.

Nero LiquidTV | TiVo PC will be available in two packages. There’s a $199.99 hardware/software bundle that includes the software application, a 12 month subscription to TiVo, a TV tuner card with A/V cables and antenna, a TiVo PC remote control, and an IR blaster and receiver. If you don’t need the hardware, there’s also a $99.99 software package which includes the application and a 12 month subscription to TiVo.
