ASP Space Aquarium

ASP Space Aquarium

This has to be one of the most beautiful home aquariums we’ve ever seen. The ASP Space Aquarium is designed to “reinvent your indoor space,” as opposed to just being an accessory with some fish in it off in a corner somewhere. The huge acrylic tanks are shaped like gently curving ellipses, and range in size from 5 to 8 feet across, which is easily large enough to turn them into room dividers. Although you can get them with floor stands, it’s much cooler to mount them from your ceiling. [Spacearium]

MacBook Air floats down to earth

“And then the skies parted, the angels sang, the birds twittered and down from Apple Heaven floated the MacBook Air.”

Yes…if you hadn’t guessed it…Apple just announced the MacBook Air is now shipping. It also put out word that the expected Apple TV update to let you rent HD movies is “not quite finished.” It should be available in another week or so.

“And all were happy in the Apple World.”

Belkin outdoes the manila envelope

Belkin Sleeve case for the MacBook AirJobs and the Apple marketing team have been using a manila envelope to show off just how thin the new MacBook Air really is, but Belkin thinks it has a little bit better carrying case for the new notebook. The new MacBook Air Sleeves come in four different designs ranging from $39.99 to $49.99 that add only slightly more bulk than the Jobs’ envelope.

The sleeves are made from Neoprene and leather and include the Slim-Fit, which has no zippers or magnets, just a sleeve and a flap for $39.99. The Neoprene/Leather model does have an asymmetrical zipper for side or top loading of your MacBook and goes for $49.99. There is also a Vertical Sleeve model with a strap which is designed for use all by itself also for $29.99 along with the Expression Sleeve which also features a strap. The other Sleeves are tailored a little more to be carried inside another bag.

Belkin says the Neoprene Sleeves will be available in March for the U.S. and Canada, and all others won’t be out until May.

Apple Launches MacBook Air - World’s Thinnest

Apple MacBook Air touted as the thinnest notebook in the worldIt looks like those MacBook Air rumors were really not too far off. Today Steve Jobs announced the latest addition to the MacBook lineup at MacWorld in San Francisco, touting it as the thinnest notebook in the world. The MacBook Air measures a mere 0.16 inches at its thinnest point, and it only gets as thick as 0.76 inches at the hinged end.

The Air Mac will start shipping in about two weeks with a retail price of $1,799, and comes with the following features:

“We’ve built the world’s thinnest notebook—without sacrificing a full-size keyboard or a full-size 13-inch display,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “When you first see MacBook Air, it’s hard to believe it’s a high-performance notebook with a full-size keyboard and display. But it is.”

MacBook Air gives a battery life of up to 5 hours, has 802.11n Wi-Fi networking and has a companion MacBook Air SuperDrive available for another $99. The SuperDrive is because, as you may have noticed, there is no optical CD/DVD drive built into it. The SuperDrive connects and is powered via the USB connection to the Mac Air notebook. Customers can also optionally add-in a 64GB solid state drive with no moving parts in addition to the 80GB internal (for nearly double the price of the notebook!).

Apple is also paying attention to the environment with this new notebook, giving it an enclosure made out of recyclable aluminum, a mercury-free and arsenic-free LCD and glass display, PVC-free internal cables, less power consumption than any other Mac, and even the packaging is less than half as much as other MacBooks and made from 100% recycled material. Heck, the packaging shouldn’t be much with something this thin; Jobs even pulled it from a simple manila envelope in the keynote speech.

Macworld 08: MacBook Air is Apple’s long-awaited ultraportable

The rumors were true: Apple has announced an ultraportable laptop, the MacBook Air, will be added to their range.  Measuring just .75-inches at its thickest point and an amazing .16-inches at its thinnest, the MacBook Air has an LED-backlit 13.3-inch display, full-sized keyboard with ambient light sensor and built-in iSight webcam, and storms the shelves as the World’s thinnest notebook.

Apple has given the Air a large trackpad which, like the iPhone’s screen, can respond to gestures.  You can pan, rotate, move entire windows and move between photos, all with simple gestures, and it will also recognise the pinching and spreading zoom in/out movements too.

Using a 1.8-inch drive has kept weight down, and will be offered in either 80GB traditional (as standard) or an optional solid-state 64GB SSD; the motherboard, even with all the necessary electronics, is only slightly longer than a pencil.  A 1.6GHz Core 2 Duo processor and 2GB of RAM is standard, with 1.8GHz an option.

Connectivity includes WiFi 802.11n and Bluetooth 2.1 +EDR, USB 2.0 and micro-DVI, and although there is no internal optical drive Apple will be offering a bus-powered accessory drive for $99.  Alternatively, you’ll be able to easily share the drive from another Mac.

Battery life is quoted as five hours full use and with all wireless features turned on.  Of particular interest to anyone who cares about the environment is the mercury-free screen and full aluminium construction, the bromide and PVC-free circuitboards and the fact that the packaging is 56-percent smaller.
