The newest addition to in-flight luxuries are in-flight showers. Obviously, it’s great for the businessman on the go. You could arrive at your destination squeaky clean. Emirates airline has just announced their ‘shower spas’ facility for first-class passengers(Of course) in their new superjumbo A380 Airbus.
Yes, the plane really carries enough water for all 14 First Class passengers to have five-minute showers, so don’t worry they won’t be recycling anything nasty. Each shower has been designed to accommodate just one person at a time, but I’m sure the mile-high club just got an upgrade. Other premium services include 14 flat-bed, massage-equipped ‘Private Suites’, each of which include remote controlled doors, work desk, electrically controlled mini-bar and an entertainment system. Nice!

We’re used to seeing our share of iPod docks, but this borders on the ridiculous. Okay, it crosses the border screaming and begging not to be deported. I think it goes without saying that this device is designed to charge your iPod while you discharge your own product, commonly known as an iLog.
It does more then charge your iPod in an inappropriate location, though. It features two USB ports and not only dispenses precious paper, but while doing so, will soothe you with music through four high-performance, moisture-resistant speakers. “Easy-to-use controls allow for one-handed navigation.” One word…Ewww!
I’m amazed they took this project seriously enough to get it to market, but disappointed they didn’t go all out by calling it the iWipe. It will cost you $80.

[CES 2008] Here’s yet another wireless speaker system for indoor use (unlike the weatherproof OutCast) - the Soundcast SpeakerCast. It works in the same manner as the OutCast, except that this comes in a rectangular form factor and is definitely not waterproof, so you’d best just leave it in the living room. It is now available for $399 at a retail store near you. Check out the other specifications below :-
- 50-watt digital amplifier
- Amplified stereo speaker enclosure with two 2″ full range drivers within
- Functions on 2.4GHz band
- 150-foot range
- Includes iCast transmitter for use with iPod
- Connectivity via auxiliary input/output jack
- SRS 3D sound field expansion

[CES 2008] Soundcast has rolled out its OutCast all-weather outdoor speaker system that targets music enthusiasts, and I must say the demonstration sounded pretty good. This weatherproof system has a charge time of approximately 1.5 hours (2 hours if you’re using it to play something), while it claims to last up a dozen hours even at full blast. Audio is transmitted via the 2.4GHz spectrum, and each transmitter has three frequencies to choose from. This is more a home solution than a commercial one, although you could use it in a small store if you’d like. There is a 350 foot range with this, and it works just fine with any audio device that takes advantage of the auxiliary input/output jack. The OutCast is now available for $699 a pop.
- One 8″ downward-firing woofer
- Four 3″ high frequency drivers in an omni-directional array
- 100 watt digital amplifier
- Constructed of water resistant plastic
- Internal AC power supply

[CES 2008] Now here’s an interesting device - the Pennda (a play on the word Panda, perhaps, since this product hails from China?) Multi-functional Residential Gateway. Don’t get scared by it’s name - this device is a wee bit larger than a Wii (no pun intended) and comes with a 7″ touchscreen display that does 800 x 480 resolution at 16.7 million colors. You can use it as a Skype phone (without the need for a PC), a photo frame or even as a central server for RSS feeds, e-mail and printing among others. Pennda is currently looking for distributors in the US, so there is no word on pricing or availability. Do you think such a device has a viable market?
- Skype-functionality
- Integrated microphone
- Built-in WiFi modem
- RSS-based online advertising platform
- Photo frame functionality
- IP PBX capability
