The mobile Web goes to Africa: Leading operator in Uganda selects Opera Mini

Opera Software today announced that Opera Mini is going to Africa. Opera Software has partnered with MTN, the leading telecommunications company in Uganda, to bring the mobile Web to the company's nearly three million subscribers. By expanding into Africa, Opera is strengthening its strategy to make the Web available to more people, on any device, from anywhere in the world.

"Africa has tremendous growth potential in Web browsing and MTN is a major communications company focused on the African continent," said Jon von Tetzchner, CEO, Opera. "We believe that everyone should have access to the full Web no matter the location or the device. MTN and Opera Software share the vision of ushering in a new era in connectivity across the African continent."

Opera Mini is built on Opera’s industry leading browser technology and is the world’s most popular mobile Web browser. According to Opera’s latest "State of the Mobile Web" report, 15.8 million people actively used Opera Mini in July 2008, with 233 pages browsed on average.

People in Uganda have already discovered the power of Opera Mini to view the full Web on their mobile phones. Consumers desire a rich Web experience regardless of the device they use. With all of the top ten sites being non-WAP oriented, it is clear that WAP will continue to diminish as more capable Web browsers are able to display full Web content on mobile phones.

Paragon launches free back-up software

image Paragon has updated its drive and system backup tool - and the new version is now available to download for free.
Drive Backup 9.0 Express offers basic backup and recovery tools as well as the ability to create a bootable flash drive, which means that PC users can recover all of their data if their machine goes down.
The software basically allows you to create an exact “image” of your PC - such as the operating system, applications, user settings and all data files.
If your machine is attacked by a virus or the drive fails, you can then restore it from this “image”, which can be saved to a USB flash drive or CD/DVD.
The software also includes a live backup tool, which creates backup images without restarting Windows as well as allowing you to keep your computer and back-up files in sync.

Secret Diary software for securing your thoughts

If you want to keep a traditional journal–you know, not a blog?–but have apprehensions about keeping your personal thoughts in an insecure book, Secret Diary might be the right software choice for you. With an all digital diary, your secrets are safe yet easily accessible to you for the future.

secret-diary

The Secret Diary looks like a particularly girly USB flash drive, but it’s really your journal. In order to view its contents, you have to type in a 4 digit PIN number on the numeric keypad. This data is encrypted and store on a 256-bit AES crypto.

Interestingly enough, if anyone ever attempts to hack into your journal, the contents will self-destruct. But in everyday normal use, the software provides plenty of features to keep your thoughts organized and personalized.
