T-Mobile data on 17 million customers stolen in ‘06

tmobile logo Here’s some rather disturbing news - Deutsche Telekom admitted on Saturday that the company lost confidential information for 17 million T-Mobile clients. The data was stolen way back in 2006 and involved data including telephone numbers, birthdates, addresses, and email addresses. According to spokesman Frank Domagala, no banking information was taken and “according to our information, even though these details have been put up for sale on the black market, there has not been a buyer.”

So here’s the real question - why did it take so long for T-Mobile to come clean on this?

X-Ray Message Plates for Airport Screeners are carry on communication

Tired of waiting in the security lines at the airport? Tired of having your laptop scanned? Well now, you can do more than use a checkpoint-friendly bag. In fact, you can send a little message to the scanner operators!

img_1554-480x320

These message plates are described as a “carry on” communication system. Made from metal, they display messages for the X-Ray to pick up when run through the scanning machine. All you have to do is place the plate in your bag and it is sure to attract some attention.

Now, of course, these are not something you can go buy and it’s probably not a good idea to do it in the first place. However, artist Evan Roth has developed this project and will soon be documenting it in real world situations. Pretty funny stuff and sure to make some sort of a statement, at the very least.

Indian Government can peek in your Blackberry mails

Blackberry India

It seems the Blackberry security controversy in India will finally come to an end. Department of Telecommunication (DoT), Intelligence Bureau and National Technical Research Organisation (NTRO) have claimed to crack the Blackberry encryption codes which helps them to track the data sent from a Blackberry device to a non Blackberry device. The government has successfully tested this on operators like Airtel, Vodafone, BPL Mobile and Reliance barring the newest entrant Tata Indicom.

The whole thing started when Tata Indicom approached DoT to seek approval for starting their own Blackberry services but was turned down initially citing ‘Blackberry as a security threat’. Then the round of negotiations began between RIM and government to allow them to track the e-mails and share the master decryption key. RIM denied sharing the key saying that the security integrated does not allow any third party or even RIM to read user information.

The reply from RIM is awaited but such snooping from the government can definitely hamper sales of Blackberry services which is known for its security measures.

Magic Message Mirror home security system

Magic Message Mirror home security systemThe Magic Message Mirror is for those who want to combine their love of Disney with home security. Mirror mirror on the wall, who’s the safest one of all? You will be, of course. The portrait in the photo above is actually a home security device.

Just wire it into your existing home security system and it will appear to be an ordinary mirror until it’s triggered by someone walking in front of the beam. That’s when the scary apparition appear just like in the Snow White movie, yelling prerecorded phrases you’ve recorded. The mirror is actually a 30 inch LCD display with a CGI character known as “Basil of the Mirror”. I’m not sure it would scare a thief enough to leave and give up his life of crime. It would probably scare him for a few seconds until he realized what’s going on. Then they would likely steal the mirror, because it’s cool.

M30P Magic Mirror is a polite security system

If you have a love of all things Disney, the M30P Magic Mirror system is the perfect home security system for you. In fact, I can’t imagine a more elaborate way to show your Disney love than with this gadget.

m30p-480x229

This Magic Mirror looks like a standard reflective device, but inside it is a 30-inch LCD display. When turned on, “Basil of the Mirror” a CGI character will notify you of various information. The catch here is that you need to already have a security system for this to work. Old Basil doesn’t really monitor your home for you, but the 100 or so messages he can say sure make it seem like he’s looking out for you.

A few sample messages include: “May I inform you that the motor car garage door has just been opened,” “Ahh yes….. it seems the Jacuzzi is now at the selected temperature” and “Hmmm…most curious… it seems that we have a pedestrian approaching up our driveway.” What a polite one that Basil is! However, if you’re not so fond of Basil, the creators of the mirror system, Themeaddicts, Inc, can custom create a character for you, if you’d like.

F-Secure and Nokia to protect and manage TeliaSonera’s corporate handsets

Two renowned Finnish companies, Nokia and F-Secure, have joined forces to protect the enterprise mobile users of TeliaSonera, as well as to offer them mobile management solutions.

The collaboration between the three big Nordic names is targeting small to medium-sized enterprises (abbreviated as SME) and it should enable them to better manage their mobile devices, while at the same time keeping them safe against security threats.

Since the handsets that feature Web & corporate email access are open to these kinds of threats, TeliaSonera has combined the F-Secure Mobile Security solution with Nokia’s Intellisync Device Management platform into a Managed Device solution that will be made available for its enterprise customers. This will allow SMEs to make use of their mobile devices at a maximum potential.

What’s interesting and perhaps surprising too is that not just the Nokia phones of TeliaSonera’s enterprise clients can benefit from the new services, but all of the carrier’s handsets in use by SMEs, regardless of their manufacturer. Pretty cool, huh?
