Developing for Nokia’s S60 on Symbian OS just got better. Why? Because Qt Software has just announced that Qt has finally been ported for S60 devices, which according to Qt’s press relese, “makes it easy for developers to create applications once and then deploy them on any of the Windows, Mac, Linux, Windows CE, Windows Mobile and embedded Linux platforms.”
“Qt,” pronounced “cute,” is “a cross-platform application framework” by definition. Qt enables developers to write applications once and deploy them across many desktop and embedded operating systems without rewriting the source code. It should be a very useful tool.

Qt can be used to either create applications and user-interfaces or even entire Qt-based devices from scratch. There’s a so-called “S60 Technology Preview” available for download right now that contains QtCore, QtTest, QtGui and QtNetwork, as well as documentation and examples and demos. Open source and commercial licenses are available from their web site, linked below.

Earlier this month during CES 2008 Nyko announced a wireless Nunchuck controller for the Wii. The Nunchuck had the wireless built in and a small adapter attached to the bottom of the Wiimote to connect them, giving you cord-free gaming action for about $30.
Now Nyko has taken into account the fact that many Wii owners already have the Nunchuck controller and really don’t need another. For this Nyko is now launching the Wireless Adapter for the Wii Nunchuck. This adapter runs on two AA’s and connects to the bottom of the Nunchuck remote, wrapping up the cord around it. A wireless adapter connects to the bottom of the Wiimote and lets you now use your existing Nunchuck and rid yourself of the cord in between. You can now completely perfect your arm-flailing windmill style of boxing without the risk of choking yourself or others, but of course there is still the risk of hitting them.
The Nunchuck wireless adapter will also save you $10 compared to the wireless Nunchuck itself with a $19.99 list price. Nyko expects to have it available sometime next month.

It was only a matter of time. After the initial success of any Nintendo product there follows a plethora of neat and nauseating colors upchucked onto the market. That time is at hand once again. There’s still no official word from Nintendo on anything but white Wii-motes, but now there is a third-party option for those of you bored with the standard white.
One of the first companies to offer a third-party substitute for the Wii-mote is Snakebyte. They are calling them Riimotes. They appear to look very close to the authentic Wii-motes, with the button design styles a bit different. The first models will be available either in a glossy black or a bright purple. Bright purple? Yuck! Maybe if you are playing a My Little Pony game…They should assault your senses in early February.
One drawback. As of now they are $59, but I’m sure they will drop soon enough.

Here’s a third-party handheld Nintendo emulator that doesn’t look like total garbage. Though it has the typical generic name of Solar MP4, this little device actually has some impressive features. It can play MP4 videos up to 320×240 in size on its 3.5 inch TFT screen, it also has built-in emulators for NES, GameBoy and GameBoy Color games. Of course you have to use ROMS loaded via an SD card, but those are easy enough to find. It can even function as an e-Book reader with the ability to read out loud any text file as long as it’s written in English or Chinese.
And of course, it has a DS-like design with solar panels, so you can play games using the power of the sun. Not bad for a knock off. You can get one for $123.32.
Did I mention that it has a USB port to charge your other gadgets?

A new game for the Nintendo DS called Metro-Wardive, uses the built-in Wi-Fi to detect hotspot activity around you as usual, but in this case it uses it to generate a unique gaming environment. Wardive captures the wlans in the immediate area like a wardive-tool and creates a game, by reading the names of the hotspots in your immediate area and turning them into enemies which try to take over your wardive-cristal. You fend them off with your touch pen, put your shields up and don’t just stay in one spot for very long.
The idea is to take metro-wardive for a walk through town and see how many enemies are hiding in the area you are in or pass through. Each time you play it captures different data and creates a new level for you.
For the moment, it’s a “proof of concept” homebrew game that will require something like a supercard so it can load the game. You would think that game manufacturers would already be using the WiFi signals as a source of randomness or “chance” that effects gameplay, but this seems to be the first.

The final December video game sales numbers are in and Nintendo won the console sales race for the month of December. According to market research firm NDP, Nintendo sold 1.35 million Wii’s during the month of December while Microsoft sold a commendable 1.26 million Xbox 360 consoles. Sony held up the rear with 798,000 PlayStation 3 consoles for the month of December.
In terms of total installed base here in the US, Microsoft leads the way with 9.2 million units (it helps that Microsoft launched the Xbox 360 a year earlier than the rest). Nintendo has 7.4 million owners here in the US while Sony has 3.3 million.
While PS3 sales have certainly picked up over the last several months (heck I even bought one), the older PS2 is still outselling its newer more advanced sibling. The PS2 sold more than 1.1 million units in December compared to the aforementioned 798,000 PS3 units.
One other important note - it’s all about content. Nintendo’s Super Mario Galaxy was certainly helping to drive Wii sales (although a lot of consumers simply want a Wii since it’s 1) cheap and 2) fun) while Call of Duty 4, Halo 3, and Assassin’s Creed was helping the Xbox 360.

It used to be you’d show up at the door with a dozen roses and a box of chocolates and you were set. Well, it doesn’t take many years for that to get old.
Why not give that special someone a Valentine’s day treat that goes hand in hand with their Nintendo Wii obsession? Paul Pape Designs now offers chocolate Mii’s for a very special and very geeky Valentine’s Day. They’re made with real Hershey’s chocolate, in white or brown and the most adorable touch(Or sickening, depending on your viewpoint) is the fact that they come in a box that resembles the Wii.
Inside said box is the message “Wii belong together, you and Mii”. Once they open the box they will find the two Mii’s with little red hearts. Ahhh. gag me. Still, they get points for originality and I know plenty of people that would love these.
