Check out this creative marketing campaign for Sony’s PSP gaming console. Have you seen one in your neighborhood? I’m guessing no, since this is actually a concept for a PSP campaign made by a fan. But how cool would it be to spot a transparent PSP with a Tie Fighter, or even Spiderman in the background. Hit the link for more pics. Sony needs to hire this guy at once.

Sony is releasing firmware updates for its consoles as if it were releasing anti-virus definition updates. The PlayStation blog has announced the new PSP firmware v5.02 that will claims to improve “system software stability during use of some features, including the PlayStation Store”. The other “some features” are still not known.
The update is expected to go live soon.

Sure, this portable gaming system might LOOK just a little bit like the Sony PSP, but don’t expect it to play any games made in the last 15 years.

Another in a long line of cheap Chinese knock-off systems, the 2PG TC8281 handheld plays a mish-mash of questionable 8-bit and 16-bit retro games that come only on special multi-game cartridges.

The 2PG console comes with five built-in games, as well as an additional “112 in 1″ game cartridge, for a total of 117 games for under $50. Hundreds of additional games can be played if you know where to look for the proper cartridges. The system also has an AV out and comes with a cheezy-looking Playstation clone controller so you can play games on your TV.

If you’re willing to take a gamble on one of these somewhat suspect systems, you can get your hands on one over at DealExtreme for $48.80 USD.

We’ve talked about the PSP-3000 interlacing issue before here on SlashGear, but now it seems some have discovered precisely why the problem popped up in the first place. To be brief, it’s all about the color blue.

While Sony hasn’t come out and said why weird lines are showing up on the new PSP-3000, a group of French gamers have. It seems this group of gamers took a 40x microscope to the LCD screen. And what it uncovered points to the color blue. To be more clear, the PSP-2000 used vertically-oriented pixels. Plus, the blue pixels were light. But now, on the PSP-3000, the pixels are horizontally-oriented and feature darker blue pixels.
The result is interlacing that stands out like a sore thumb. It’s just not pretty. Sony can call it a feature all they want (yeah, right). The fact of the matter is the PSP-3000’s screen is a step backwards.

Sony have decided that, for the moment at least, the Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters bundle will be the only way that gamers can buy the new PSP-3000 with its updated screen and integrated microphone. That means that the PSP Entertainment Pack, which was set to offer the PSP-3000 together with a 4GB memory stick and no included title, has been axed.

Gamers who still want the larger capacity 4GB memory card will have to buy it as a separate accessory, priced at $44.99, this fall. The existing bundle will continue offering the “mystic silver” PSP-3000, with a “piano black” version following in December.
Sony claim that the decision is based on feedback from customers and discussions with their “retail partners”, regarding the popularity of the Ratchet & Clank bundle. A more cynical person might wonder if retailers are getting frustrated by the shelf-space required for all the different PSP bundles and options, and Sony have seized on this as an opportunity to cut out a cheaper, non-bundle option for the new PSP-3000.

This is not a mandatory update. The firmware upgrade is actually related to the issue cropped up while using higher capacity memory cards. There seemed to be an error showing ‘insufficient disk space’ while downloading content on 8GB or 16GB cards from PSN Store and this firmware helps to resolve that conflict. Users with lower than 8GB cards can pass on this update.

The PSP 3000 is touted to be the next technology by Sony. The screen is updated and supposedly makes for better color, less glare and less “pixel ghosting.” But it seems the screens are presenting whole new problems not present on the old models.

In fact, users are complaining of artifacts on the new screens. Things like jagged edges and scanlines are now visible. This is definitely a problem and while it may bug some more than others, it still needs to be pointed out. Especially since Sony is dubbing the PSP 3000 as their best yet. And when you’re paying $170-$200, you expect a company to keep their word.
According to Engadget Japan, Sony’s Japanese headquarters (SCEI) have the following to say: “Since this phenomenon is caused by hardware characteristics, there is no plan to fix it with a system software update.” That is not exactly comforting. We’ll have to wait and see what SCEA has to say about it, too.
