Tomy Xiao camera with built-in printer available in US

The Tomy Xiao digital camera with built-in Zink printer has gone on sale in the US, courtesy of importers AudioCubes.  Resembling a Flip Mino with its upright stance, the Xiao has a 5-megapixel sensor and can instantly spit out 2 x 3-inch sticky-backed prints.

takaratomy_xiao_1

takaratomy_xiao_2Built into the camera are multiple templates, borders and frames to let you customize your image before printing it.  Prints themselves take around a minute to produce, but unlike a traditional Polaroid camera you do at least have the option of which shot to get a hard-copy of.  The Zink paper itself costs around $12.99 for a pack of 30 (roughly 43 cents a print).

However the price of such impulsive convenience is high.  While the Xiao is on sale in Japan for the equivalent of around $350, in the US it’ll cost you $499.99.  It’s available in three colors: black, green and a particularly vibrant shade of pink.

Keian Japan to release all-in-one digital photo frame printer

p71_a2_jp_1-385x480Everyday a new digital picture frame is released. Some are better than others, no doubt, but not all of them try to pack a printer into them. Keian Japan is doing just that with their P71-A2-JP digital photo frame, which features an integrated printer.

This 7-inch digital photo frame has a 480 x 234 resolution. It also supports MS and SD, including SDHC up to 32GB. It can play MP3 audio files to go along with your photo presentations and has a USB host for added convenience. But the really interesting part about this digital frame is that is has a printer built in. It saves photos from a memory card once they are selected from the viewing screen.

The printer is capable of 300 dpi resolution on 100 x 150mm photo paper. It’s an interesting and convenient way to print out photos for your guests, let’s say, if they see a shot they particularly like or to scrapbook on the fly.

MCor Matrix 3D printer uses regular paper

Why is it that whenever I hear about anything with the word “3D” in the title, the child in me perks up? Regardless of the reason, there’s no doubt that the Matrix 3D Printer from MCor is pretty cool not just because it pops out prototypes on the fly. It also renders 3D objects out of regular paper. Yes, that A4 stuff!

mcor-3d-printing-520x314-480x289

3D printers or prototype machines are known for being incredibly expensive, and while this latest offering from MCor won’t exactly put the devices in everyone’s homes, it’ll certainly bring that dream a step closer. In fact, it uses regular paper to build 3D objects and does so by gluing paper pieces together. And the results look to be fairly sturdy.

This would definitely lower the cost of printing out 3D objects, which normally requires polymer to layer on top of itself to build prototypes. If this piques your interest, keep your eye on Q1 of 2009 for the Matrix 3D Printer to make its debut.

Tomy xiao digital camera with built in Zink printer

Tomy xiao digital camera with built in Zink printerMany of us miss Polaroids. They weren’t all that great, but they did provide a strange sort of instant gratification. Sadly, Polaroid is dead. But it keeps coming back in other forms. You might remember Zink, that company whose technology prints digital photos on the spot without ink.

Well, they’re back, this time with strange bedfellows. They’ve been rolling around in the sheets with toy-maker Tomy to make the xiao TIP-521, a digital camera with a printer built in. The xiao has a five megapixel resolution, so you may want to wait a bit. The point is they are on it people. Polaroid lives on.

Canon introduces large scale printer with clear toner

Canon imagePRESS C1+Back when I had a real job I used to maintain the network, computers and printers in a large pharmacy. Someone was always breaking the laser printers and every time I had to mess with one, I ended up coated in black toner powder. The stuff was next to impossible to get off your clothes.

Canon has introduced a new printer that also uses clear toner, which I am sure would be easier to get out of your clothes. The printer using the clear toner is called the imagePRESS C1+. The printer is designed for the light production and proofing markets.

Why clear toner? Canon says the clear toner allows for more creative options and companies can use the clear toner to watermark images and productions for added security. The printer outputs 1200 x 1200 dpi resolution and can print 14 ppm in color and 60 ppm in black.

Don’t look now, but your printer is spying on you

There’s no reason to panic, but this is a little unnerving. The EFF has found that all printers produce teeny tiny yellow dots on each and every piece of paper that passes through them. But what they can’t figure out is why.

picture-14

These super small dots are so small, in fact, they can’t really be seen with the naked eye. In order to see them, you’ll need to either view them under a microscope or under a blue light. Blue light turns the yellow dots black, making them show up better like in the photo above.

EFF has determined these dots indicate the printer model from which a document was printed. It can also include information like the time and date it was printed. It’s all pretty strange. It seems the government asked the printer companies to do this and they complied. But is this legal? Who knows. But now I want to check out some documents under blue light. Check out the video below and visit Seeing Yellow for more information.

Objet Alaris 30 Desktop 3D Printer

Objet Alaris 30 Desktop 3D PrinterHave you ever wished you had a real-life replicator that can actually create 3D objects from nothing? Like the Star Trek Replicator? It’s here. Actually 3D printers have been around for awhile, but are just now getting small enough to fit onto your desk. The Objet Alaris 30 is a compact desktop 3D printer that uses a peripheral with PolyJet Photopolymer Jetting. This helps it produce 600 x 600 dpi objects up to 11.5 x 7.7 x 5.9 inches in size.

That’s an improvement over the 5-inch cube that they did last year. The printer can manufacture small moving elements as thin as 0.0011 inches. According to Objet, the Alaris 30 Desktop 3D Printer will give you 36 hours of unattended printing from your 3D CAD files. No word on pricing or availability.
