great showdowns of the 8-bit era [video game art]

I think I have a new favorite video game artist. I’ve already got a set of Scott Campbell’s hilarious Pac-Man illustrations in my house, and now I’m totally in love with his new “Great Showdowns (of the 8-Bit era)” series that he did for the 2008 iam8-bit video game art show at the World of Wonder gallery in Hollywood, Ca.

Scott’s mini paintings (3″ x 5″ each) offer a whimsical take on the confrontations between classic video game characters and their various nemeses. Dig Dug tries to make friends with Pooka and Fygar instead of exploding their insides, while Frogger contemplates how exactly he’ll jump onto that damned log so he can make it home from work once again. Back in the day, I pumped so many quarters into Moon Patrol, that the moon buggy vs. happy rock scene is my personal favorite.

While the original paintings have already found good homes, for $100 you can get your hands on a set of 5 mini prints (limited to just 30 per edition), signed and numbered by Campbell over on A Paper Tiger If you want a set for your wall, you’d better hurry.

Make your own paper R2-D2

Make your own paper R2-D2
A long time ago in a galaxy far away…someone used the Death Star plans to build a paper droid and messed up the whole rebel plan. And so can you, if you have an ink jet printer, some scissors and glue.

It’s pretty accurate for paper, looks pretty awesome, plus it’s articulated. And if you really want to prove your paper droid making skills, you can use vector-based PDF plans to print and build your own life-sized R2 unit, but don’t let the Empire get a hold of the plans.

Make your own paper camera

Make your own paper camera
Do you need a camera, but your budget is tight? Have paper and some free time? Corbis can help you print out and make your own camera. They’ve released some funky templates on their Web site.

All you have to do is print out a PDF file and stick it onto a card. After you’ve followed the score lines, then cut and folded accordingly, you’ll have a neat looking camera. The real trick will be finding some 35mm film, but that’s what eBay is for. You’ll have a pinhole camera that stands apart from everyone elses. How sturdy it will be is anybody’s guess. If you do this, let us know.

pop art prints for retro geeks

Do you like tiny art with vintage robot and video game themes? If you do, please enjoy the pop arty, old-timey stylings of Singapore artist JoE, aka Etsy seller monstergallery. These fun prints measure a wee 3 1/4″ x 3 1/4″ and are available in limited editions of 100 pieces.

I love the fadey-scratchy finish on these pieces and the limited color palette. And I also love the idea of gathering multiple pieces together for a larger scale wall grouping. Certainly the price is right for creating a series of this type, at a mere $4.50 each, so my fantasy of having tons of robots in my house is becoming a reality…

I say two thumbs up!

See JoE’s complete collection (don’t miss Gozilla and Astro Boy!) and contact him at his Etsy shop.

OQO announces Model E2 with HSDPA — and that’s all

Man, what a tease. OQO’s Anytime / Anywhere event is all wrapped up in London and with it, an updated OQO Model E2 with HSDPA data is born. At the moment, that’s all that’s been announced, a same spec’d Model E2 with a €250 (about $367) premium inclusion of HSDPA/UMTS 2100MHz; GSM/EDGE/GPRS 900/1800MHz (SIM Free) data. Really now, was a full-blown press conference required to announce a simple (though useful) HSDPA bump to the European version of the Model 02? Full press release coming tomorrow — maybe we’ll see some surprises then.

OQO brings the OQO Model e2 to Europe

OQO has finally brought its wares to the rest of the world with the introduction of the Model e2, the opening of an international office in the UK, and the hiring of a former Palm Europe Executive. In case you were wondering, the Model e2 appears identical to North America’s OQO Model 02, albeit with a UK style keyboard. For now, distribution is limited to eXpansys, Portix, and Dynamism, shipping at prices between £846 and £1,359.95. Yeah, the same kind of “price parity” Europeans have long enjoyed applies to the OQO Model 2s, too.

Sprint on parade: Centro, Vogue, and OQO Model 02

Ugh, not more pictures of Palm’s Centro, you gasp. Yes… and much more. This time, it’s the Centro nuzzled up for some quickie shots with Sprint’s Treo 755p and new Vogue (that’s, HTC Touch to the rest of the world) and what must be Sprint’s take on the new OQO Model 02. A veritable who’s who of soon to be launched Sprint handsets. Better yet, our tipster — contrary to previous reports — “noticed little to no difference in typing on the QEWRTY with the Centro to the Treo” while noting that the Centro was “much nicer to hold.” He also says that the Vogue was running a 400MHz Qualcomm processor (not the standard OMAP 850) with 256MB ROM / 120MB RAM which suffered “no slowdown” even while running 15-20 applications. Check out all the sneaky pictures in the gallery below. Oh, as to the device to the right of the Vogue and below the OQO: that’s a mystery, any ideas?

[Thanks, Catharsis]
