Is it just me, or are the Motorola Atila and Motorola Alexander very poorly designed? Anyway, the two unnannounced Motorola smartphones, earlier leaked in live pics, are said to be “under construction” in the factories of Compal Communications. Maybe that explains where all these leaked photos have been coming from.
This info is gathered from a recent Commercial Times report, which says “Compal Communications has received orders for two Windows Mobile-based PDA phones,” aptly named the Alexander and Attila, from none other than good old Motorola.

The same report also reveals that the two upcoming Motorola handsets were actually scheduled for a shipment date somewhere between Q4 2008. The reason for the delay wasn’t specified, but shipments are now set in Q1 2009.
Motorola probably didn’t want its new babies to get drowned out in the noise of iPhone 3G and Nokia 5800 XpressMusic sales during the holiday season. That, or like many of its currently available products, the Motorola Alexander and Atila both still stink, and therefore need more work on their features still.

Just as we had earlier reported, the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic has just been officially launched in Taiwan, and will be available for a price of NT$14,900 or about $446 USD.
That still isn’t quite the same figure as what Nokia has promised, and it wasn’t specified exactly what factors were taken into account while determining the handset’s price.
But the interesting thing is that it seems to fall in line with what we previously uncovered: that vendors were allowed to tack an extra $100 or so on the 5800 XpressMusic’s price and just bundle it with some sort of promotional material or free stuff.

With its current retail price, both in Taiwan and Spain, the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic might as well be a high-end phone. But nay, says Nokia, for it is only intended for the mid-range market.
And speaking of the market, it is said that Nokia plans to launch a Taiwanese version of the Nokia Music Store and Comes with Music, as well as a Chinese-version of Ovi in 2009.
That’s all well and good, but one thing Nokia has to work on is getting the handsets that work great with the services out into the hands of as many customers as possible in the first place. Then maybe their services will really start to get some traction.

Reusing yet another old model number designation, Nokia has officially announced a new feature-rich handset running Series 40. Called the Nokia 6260 Slide, this fine-looking slider phone boasts a 5-megapixel camera, the latest 3G technology with support for HSUPA and HSDPA networks, and built-in Wi-Fi for fast Internet connectivity.
The Nokia 6260 Slide also comes with a first for the Series 40 platform: GPS with A-GPS, that will not only enable users to pinpoint their exact locations on the map whenever, wherever, but will also facilitate geo-tagging of photos before they are shared through Nokia’s Ovi sharing service.

As usual for a Nokia, this will be more than just another bland phone. It has the great S40 music player, Internet browser, and a front-facing camera is also present for 3G calls. Note that in one of the photos, the little blue star used to activate the Nokia Maps application is also present on the phone’s left side, which is telling of how much Nokia wants to promote the addition of GPS on this new model.
The Nokia 6260 Slide is expected to come out in the beginning of 2009 for an estimated retail price of €299 (or about $386 USD) before taxes and subsidies. It wasn’t specified which markets exactly this model will appear first in, but being a mass market phone, it would probably be sold by Nokia worldwide.

Samsung’s latest high-end Symbian S60 smartphone, the i7110, was officially presented last month, but without any pricing info.
Now its retail price has been unveiled and it’s not at all good news. As it’s said in the article’s title, Samsung i7110 will be sold for €499, in Germany at least. That’s $625, and I’m not sure about how many customers will want to buy the handset for this kind of money. Not that Nokia’s Nseries smartphones are cheaper, but I’m just saying.
Anyway, the i7110 might be better than many of Nokia’s S60 products. That’s because, among its features, there’s a 2.6 inches QVGA AMOLED display, optical mouse, Wi-Fi with DLNA, internal GPS, a 5MP autofocus camera, TV out and so on.
The new Samsung candybar will be on sale in Germany starting December, under the official name of Samsung i7110 Pilot. Other European countries should get the smartphone at about the same time.
Here is a video presentation of Samsung i7110.

For those of you looking into getting your first touchscreen handset, the LG KP500 would be a good bet. It hasn’t been officially announced by LG, but word on the street is that it will be known as the LG Cookie once it’s finally released, and comes with a touchscreen among other interesting features.
There are a mere three buttons on its face, positioned below the 3-inch TFT touchscreen display, while around back there’s a 3-megapixel fixed focus camera to take care of your snaps. There’s supposedly no support for 3G networks on-board, but at least it gets EDGE on top of being quadband GSM.

Other features of the LG Cookie include:
Built-in accelerometer with auto-screen rotate for images, videos and documents
Landscape virtual QWERTY keyboard
Support for widgets
11.9mm thick
Records QVGA video at 12 FPS while playback is up to 24 FPS
You can see more of the LG KP500’s featureslg, on one of our earlier reports. As for its price, it’s rumored to be somewhere around 170 Euro, before taxes and subsidies. In that case, it should be one of the most affordable touchscreen handsets out there, and no doubt a lot of people are going to spring for it at the first chance they get. Once it gets released on its still unknown release date, that is.

Microsoft isn’t messing around this holiday season. They want consoles in homes. They dropped the price on all Xbox 360 SKU’s a few months ago, and it just got better. Microsoft has announced that later this month the new 360’s will hit store shelves with some free games included.
With the $199 Arcade, you’ll get 6 games, which includes SEGA Superstars Tennis, Uno, and Pac-Man. If you choose to spend more for either the $299 Pro or $399 Elite version, and you’ll get Lego Indiana Jones and Kung Fu Panda. Plus, all three will come with a trial subscription to Netflix. That might seem odd, but beginning next month you’ll be able to stream Netflix movies to your 360.

T-Mobile and Google have just officially announced the world’s very first handset running the open-source Android OS, the T-Mobile G1. Previously dubbed the HTC Dream, this handset is the collective work of thousands of workers, contributors, and coders, who want to put a powerful, and yet open phone, in the hands of consumers.
The T-Mobile G1’s official commercial launch date is on October 22nd, but T-Mobile customers can already order starting today. It looks like it will only be available in “selected T-mobile markets” for now, but it is promised to hit the UK in November and across Europe in Q1 2009. The handset itself should be able to work mighty fine over 3G, but when reception is weak, built-in Wi-Fi will have users covered.

The Android platform itself on which the T-Mobile G1 will be running on will only go open source when it launches in October. And if you’re wondering about the price, well, wonder no more. It’s going to be sold for only $179 USD (!), but under a T-Mobile contract. But come on, it’s $179! Cheaper than some music players out there…
Anyway, with Android and the T-Mobile G1 now finally out in the open, things are getting a little more clearer by the moment. Clearly, great things are going to come from Google for this year’s Christmas! Stay tuned for the full T-Mobile G1 specs and features.
