Cowon O2 PMP beta firmware & SDK released

Cowon have released a new version of the SDK for their O2 PMP, allowing developers to create third-party apps for the device without needing to actually have the O2 to hand.  The software now includes an emulator, which means new code can be tested more readily rather than needing to transfer it to the PMP itself.

Cowon have also released the latest beta firmware for the PMP, version 1.14.  It brings with it better support for large and faulty video files, reduced gaps between audio tracks, improved wallpaper support and new transitions between images in slideshows, among other things.

Version 1.14 of the O2 firmware is required for software created with the SDK to be usable on the PMP.  Both are free downloads; however the site seems to suggest that the SDK requires Linux to run.

Motorola ROKR EM35 announced, instantly overshadowed

Hi Motorola, it’s me, Chris.  I realize I’m no whiz-bang analyst, but I do think you could’ve picked a better time to announce your MOTO ROKR EM35 cellphone than the same day that everyone is obsessing over the Nokia N97.  Somehow, dedicated music keys, CrystalTalk personalized noise adaptation and integrated stereo speakers don’t quite compete.

In a way it’s a shame, because there are a couple of neatish features.  The integrated FM antenna means you don’t have to have a wired headset plugged in to listen to the radio, you can do it over Bluetooth A2DP headphones, and there’s a “FastScroll” navigation wheel to quickly whip through tracks on the 110MB of built-in memory or microSD card (with up to 32GB cards supported).  There’s also a web-browser and internet-enabled widgets, though don’t expect great performance as the EM35 tops out at EDGE.

The Motorola ROKR EM35 will be available sometime in Q4 2008, which means they’ve got about four weeks.  No word on pricing, but expect it to be more entry level than, well, N97 level.  More info here.

iRiver Wave WiFi phone on sale in Korea

iRiver’s parent company Reigncom and Korean cellular carrier KT have announced the release of the iRiver Wave, seemingly jumping the previously publicized March 9th 2009 launch.   The handset - which includes WiFi for media streaming, internet access and VoIP - will initially be available at ten “iRiver Zones” in Korea, before more mainstream availability.

The Wave has a a 3-inch, 480 x 272 touchscreen and in addition to mobile media (including audio downloads) has an FM radio and e-dictionary.  Internal storage is 4GB, expanded via miniSD, and the handset comes preloaded with access to the Bugs Music Service for on-device media downloads.  The media player can handle MP3, WMA, OGG and MPEG 1/2/2.5 audio files, and MPEG-4 (30fps 480 x 272) video files.

It’s unclear what price the Korean carrier is asking for the Wave.  As usual, there’s no word on a release in the US or Europe.

Chuwi M70 7-inch 800 x 480 PMP

Chuwi might not be a name you’re especially familiar with, but I’d certainly like to get to know their new M70 PMP.  Blessed with a 7-inch 800 x 480 resolution display, the M70 will play audio and video files as well as display photos and output to a TV; other specs are something of a mystery.

chuwi_m70_pmp_1-480x360

File compatibility is a long, long list.  In audio the M70 supports MP3, WMA, WMA VBR, APE, FLAC, AAC, OGG, RM and RMVB, while video formats include AVI, DIVX, XVID, FLV, ASF and MP4.  Image formats include JPEG, BMP and GIF.  There’s also apparently an FM radio and microphone for using the M70 as a voice recorder.

A 4,000mAh battery and word that the display is made by LG round out pretty much all we know about the M70.  In fact the only issue could be size: at 7-inches, this isn’t exactly the most pocketable of PMPs.

Creative Zen Moo MP3 Players are cow-tastic

In case you’re on the hunt for a totally unique MP3 player, then you might want to consider the Creative Zen Moo MP3 Player. Yes, you read that right. These little MP3 players are designed in the shape of a cow and are feature-filled.

zen_moo-480x319

You have two options when it comes to the Zen Moo MP3 Players. There’s the Moo and the Moo Plus. That’s not even a joke. Both styles come in four different colors: pink, red, white and yellow. The Moo Plus, however, sports a few extra features like an integrated speaker, FM radio, voice recorder and OLED screen. It also has a game built-in that you can control by means of the cow’s horns.

The Moo model, on the other hand, just plays back music. Both, however, are equipped with 2GB and support both WMA and MP3 formats. Unfortunately, the Creative Zen Moo MP3 Players will not be available in the US or any of the western world, for that matter, though you will be able to get it in China.
