Hackers will get a machine to do all kinds of things that it should do, but doesn’t. Correcting the oversights of those damn lazy companies. We want things the way we want them. That’s why some Wii coders have made it so the Wii can have DVD playback.
It’s done by installing a hidden channel on the console, which gives it a DVD access library so you can watch all your favorite dvds with the MPlayer application, an open source media player. The install file works on both modded and unmodded Wiis. They are apparently experimenting with playing media from SD cards as well. Now you’ll be able to watch any DVD you want one last time before Blu-Ray creeps into your life.

It’s a beautiful summer day. You want nothing more then to play your Wii and enjoy the outdoors. But you can’t do both. Or can you? Now you can, thanks to this solar powered Wii station.
Whether it’s some exercise with Wii fit or a kick-ass round of Mario Kart, you’ll be having fun in the sun. It’s basically little more then a wooden case that houses the Wii, a high definition display, a solar power panel, and a battery, so I’m sure it’s entirely worth the $1,431 build cost.

Here’s a super cool Firefox widget called Firenes. It lets you instantly play any NES game in right in your browser. Tell me that’s not the coolest thing ever. It took me almost an hour to write this because I couldn’t stop playing the damn thing. It’s free and easy to install, requiring just a lightning fast download that will give you a sidebar that is your gateway to NES heaven. Why are you still reading this? Get playing.

Check out the Plug & Play wireless speaker system concept. Which ” makes all ones music available, regardless if it is stored on cell phones, PCs or MP3 players.” The audio files are transmitted from ones device to PLAY by small PLUG elements. The Plugs can be hooked up to the dock for charging and in the speaker there’s a transparent LCD-display in the glass which displays song titles, info, etc. [Yanko]

Peter Bennett created the “Beat-Bearing”, a tangible interface that “generates rhythmic patterns using ball bearings.” Video after the jump. The Sequences are created by placing the metal orbs in a grid of receptor cups representing the different rhythm tracks along the vertical axis. Looks and might sound cool too.

A gentleman who goes by the name Gieskes has created an interesting conflation of seemingly opposing mediums. The DIY’er / artist in question has combined Game Boy-based music with a low-fi, mechanical system of lights and motors, which create kinetic-art visuals that are synced to the sound. The concept is to build screen-saver-like displays which are actually created with analog equipment. The device features three components — cans, lights, and a camera — all of which can be “sequenced” much like the Game Boy, thus producing constantly changing (and changeable) effects. M-Audio, known in the pro and semi-pro recording world as being… well, semi-pro, has just introduced a new product to its lineup which will make recording your American Idol demo reel way, way easier. Enter the Session Music Producer, a misleadingly named device which is essentially a USB, powered vocal mic with a built-in headphone jack, allowing you to monitor yourself in realtime without any delays normally experienced by using a separate headphone output. The mic comes with M-Audio’s “Session” recording / production software for PCs (think GarageBand for Windows), which lets you build simple sequences and offers a 2GB loop library to get you started on a career in music. Take our advice though: get a good lawyer before you sign anything. No word on when the Session Music Producer hits stores, but it will run you $99.95 when it does.
