For those of you who’ve always wanted to broadcast or stream your corporate meetings to friends using your trusty BlackBerry, the folks from over at Qik have very good news. It seems that a lot of BlackBerry users have been longing for their very own Qik client, and fortunately Qik was kind enough to oblige.
Now, if you’ve got a BlackBerry Pearl 8120, BlackBerry Pearl 8130, BlackBerry Bold, BlackBerry Curve, or BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8220, you can expect to fiddle with the first alpha release client of Qik starting today.

Actually, the BlackBerry Curve and BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8220 release clients aren’t yet ready for prime time, but the other models mentioned can immediately be used to join in on the fun. Qik adds that the BlackBerry Curve 8320 and 8330 have been confirmed to be also alpha-ready.
Note, however, that there are several differences with these BlackBerry alpha release clients and the clients for other handsets, and they are:
- When you start Qik, a screen is shown with just one button - Stream. Press the center button to start streaming. This will bring up the camera application and you’ll be off streaming live to the web. When you are ready to stop, just press the center button again.
- Depending on the network condition, after you press stop, you may see a progress % on the top right hand corner indicating the video that is left to be sent. It is advised to wait for the stream to be completely uploaded prior to streaming again.
- In this version, the chat does not show up overlayed on the camera.
- For best performance, use BlackBerry OS 4.5 and above.
- Your BlackBerry should have a SD card and video capture should be set to the directory: SDCard/Blackberry/Videos.
- The video capturing mode should not be set to the MMS mode.
That’s according to the Qik team themselves. Get it now by going to http://qik.com/dl/165 if you’re already a Qik user, or sign up first at http://qik.com/sign_up.

What the ….???! NPD Group released a report of the five top selling phones in US which to everyone’s surprise is Moto RAZR V3, heading the mobile phone charts. Motorola may have hit the right note to appeal the US citizens but still have a lot of work to do to please the world. No need to say their current financial status must have made them realize that US Market does not equal the World Market.
Anyways, if you’re waiting for the remaining four phones which ruled the US market, then they are as follows:
2) Apple iPhone
3) Blackberry Curve
4) LG Chocolate
5) Blackberry Pearl

As nice as SureType on the BlackBerry Pearl 8220 may be, there’s something to be said about a full QWERTY keyboard. As such, fans of text messaging and flip phones may want to take a gander at the recently revealed Sprint LG LX600 Lotus.
Set to launch with Sprint, the LG Lotus is a somewhat chubby flip phone, but instead of having a standard numeric keypad, it actually packs a full slate of QWERTY for all your text messaging needs. Aside from the somewhat cramped QWERTY keyboard, the LG LX600 Lotus also has Bluetooth 2.0, a 2.0 megapixel camera, and a reasonably compact form factor.

The Lotus comes in luxurious colors such as purple with embossed flowers or satin black. At the first glance, the handset is targeted to female consumers, but I won’t mind to own a black version.
The LG LX600 Lotus will be released next month for $149.99 with two-year contract.

Research in Motion announced their first ever Blackberry flip phone. Coming from the Pearl series, this one will give the user all the benefits of push e-mail in a small form factor. 8220 has two screens – external and internal both producing a resolution of 128 x 160 pixels and 240 x 320 pixels respectively. It borrows the same Suretype keyboard layout and includes EDGE and Wi-Fi as the connectivity options.
There’s also a GPS receiver integrated, Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP, music player and microSDHC card compatible. The phone’s 900 mAh battery has enough juice to pull off 4 hours worth of talk time and over 14 hours as standby.

That rumor about the first BlackBerry clamshell being announced today turned out to be true after all. RIM just issued an official press release with information regarding the BlackBerry Pearl 8220’s initial launch.
Officially called the BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8220, that clamshell smartphone we all knew as the BlackBerry Kickstart will be a quadband GSM EDGE based handset weighing in at only 3.6 ounces. It features both an internal and external LCD screen, and measures approximately 3.9” x 1.9” x 0.7”.

Despite its diminutive size, however, RIM’s President and co-CEO Mike Lazaridis says it is “a full-featured smartphone with a unique and friendly design and it is a natural choice for flip phone users who want to start doing more with their phone than just talk.”
Its best assets include a large SureType QWERTY keyboard, integrated access to BlackBerry wireless services, on-the-go document viewing and editing, as well as tight integration with corporate e-mail systems.
It’s not all work and all play, too, since it also features a built-in 2 megapixel camera, music player with 11 preset equalizer settings, support for up to 16GB microSDHC memory cards, and USB 2.0 connectivity.
Worldwide availability is scheduled for this year’s fall, with T-Mobile being the exclusive US carrier when it launches initially. No word on pricing yet.

Eager to finally experience RIM’s BlackBerry OS 4.5? We may not be able to let you play with the devices themselves that have said OS, but we can’t definitely point out to you that it’s going to be delivered indeed. And probably sooner than you expected, at that.
An internal AT&T PowerPoint memo dug up by The Boy Genius gives us details of the upcoming devices that will ship with BlackBerry OS 4.5 pre-installed, as well as the date when the update will be released for existing devices.

As it turns out, the BlackBerry OS 4.5 update will be rolled out by mid-September for the 8820, Curve 8310, Pearl 8120, and Curve 8300. As mentioned above, the same update will be included in future shipments of the said devices, with of course the same features.
And speaking of features, here’s what you’ll get:
- HTML e-mail and formatting
- Remote server search
- Free/busy calendar lookup
- Video recording
- Improved media player
- Office document editing option pre-loaded
As for the exact date, it still hasn’t been confirmed. But mid-September isn’t that distant now anyway, so we suggest just keep your eyes peeled for the release.
