PSP burns in school kid’s pants

PSP burns in school kid’s pants
A 12 year old Michigan Middle School student had his PSP in his pocket during band practice, when the battery overheated, burning a hole in his pants and sending him to the hospital with leg burns. It seems that in this particular school, students are allowed to have the systems with them as long as they don’t play them during school hours. A policy which I am sure will change after such a close brush with what could have been a case of char broiled genitals.

Sony has been quiet so far regarding the incident. No word on whether the kid was using a third party battery inside the system or not. Much to the kid’s dismay, after being treated he was back in school later in the afternoon.

It’s a sad day when a burning PSP in your pocket doesn’t even get you the rest of the day off.

Macworld 08: First play of the MacBook Air advert

Despite the uncontrollable salivation over the new MacBook Air ultraportable, our intrepid Macworld 08 team still managed to shoot footage of the lustworthy laptop’s first advert.

There may not be built in WiMAX or cellular broadband, but the MacBook Air is still indecently thin - just 0.76-inches at its narrowest - respectably powered, thanks to an Intel Core 2 Duo CPU in 1.6GHz or 1.8GHz flavors, and features a gesture-sensitive touchpad that borrows from the iPhone’s MultiTouch capabilities.  All in something that weighs 3lbs.

Macworld 08: MacBook Air is Apple’s long-awaited ultraportable

The rumors were true: Apple has announced an ultraportable laptop, the MacBook Air, will be added to their range.  Measuring just .75-inches at its thickest point and an amazing .16-inches at its thinnest, the MacBook Air has an LED-backlit 13.3-inch display, full-sized keyboard with ambient light sensor and built-in iSight webcam, and storms the shelves as the World’s thinnest notebook.

Apple has given the Air a large trackpad which, like the iPhone’s screen, can respond to gestures.  You can pan, rotate, move entire windows and move between photos, all with simple gestures, and it will also recognise the pinching and spreading zoom in/out movements too.

Using a 1.8-inch drive has kept weight down, and will be offered in either 80GB traditional (as standard) or an optional solid-state 64GB SSD; the motherboard, even with all the necessary electronics, is only slightly longer than a pencil.  A 1.6GHz Core 2 Duo processor and 2GB of RAM is standard, with 1.8GHz an option.

Connectivity includes WiFi 802.11n and Bluetooth 2.1 +EDR, USB 2.0 and micro-DVI, and although there is no internal optical drive Apple will be offering a bus-powered accessory drive for $99.  Alternatively, you’ll be able to easily share the drive from another Mac.

Battery life is quoted as five hours full use and with all wireless features turned on.  Of particular interest to anyone who cares about the environment is the mercury-free screen and full aluminium construction, the bromide and PVC-free circuitboards and the fact that the packaging is 56-percent smaller.

The new MacBook Air will ship in two weeks, and is available to pre-order now starting at $1799

Macworld 08: iTunes Movie Rentals announced

A free software update, announced at the Macworld Keynote, will introduce iTunes Movie Rentals to iPod, iPhone and iTunes users.  The service, which will feature content from Touchstone, Miramax, Lions Gate, Paramount, Universal, Sony, Walt Disney, Fox and Warner Bros, as well as others, will launch with over 1000 titles by the end of February, with new content added 30 days after DVD release.

 iTunes Movie Rentals

New releases will be priced at $3.99, with older “library” titles $2.99, and once downloaded you have 30 days to start watching and, once you’ve pressed play, 24hrs total to view and re-view the film before it ‘expires’.  Movies can be watched through iTunes or, with the click of a button, transferred to an iPod to be viewed on the move, even mid-movie.

Macworld 08: Apple TV updated with streaming iTunes content, YouTube and movie rentals

Apple TV, the company’s wireless set-top box, has been updated so as to function without the need for a Mac, opening up the device to the thousands of potential users yet to invest (or unable to afford) one of Apple’s computers.  While iTunes content can be streamed direct to the Apple TV and enjoyed through a connected widescreen TV, owners now have the option to browse, research and buy TV shows, music and titles from the new movie rentals service direct from the set-top box itself.

Apple TV new UI

In addition, photos from Flickr and .Mac will also be viewable on the Apple TV, all from the device’s brand-new UI, and purchased movie titles are in full HD DVD quality with 5.1 surround sound.  Media is automatically sync’d back to iTunes on your Mac, and there are previews and media bios so you can try before you buy.

Perhaps most excitingly, as soon as you choose to purchase a movie it starts downloading and, within seconds, you can start to watch it.

The new Apple TV is priced at $229, and a software update will bring the functionality to owners of existing models.

Macworld 08: iPhone update with Multi-recipient SMS, improved maps and more

A software update for the iPhone, announced at Macworld, will add a mixture of new functionality and what many consider to have been oddly missing from the handset all along, including the ability to send SMS text messages to multiple recipients.  Jobs also announced the ability to configure up to nine custom home-screens, including adding WebClips bookmark links to the Springboard which act as shortcuts to that website, and the Springboard icons themselves are easily rearranged.  The iPhone’s music app gets the addition of lyrics-support (that are superimposed semi-transparent over the album art), while video footage can be organised into chapters and now supports subtitles.

Google Maps on the iPhone has also been improved, with SkyHook Wireless supplying real-world physical location data that enables the cellphone to pinpoint your location, similar to Google’s Find Me service, and then offer directions.  Introducing saved locations is as straightforward as dropping a pin onto the map.
