Polk Atrium Outdoor Speakers sound great but lack looks

Polk Audio announced their Atrium Sat 10 and Sub 30 outdoor speaker system at CEDIA 2008. Meant for enjoying music in the great outdoors, this satellite/subwoofer system produces great quality sound.

Outdoor theaters are all the rage these days, so this audio system seems to be right on target. And I get what they’re doing with the terra cotta style planter. I know the subwoofer is supposed to blend in with its surroundings and just look like another backyard decoration, but it does have a bit of a plastic look.

These speakers sound great when they’re blasting together, but the price tag is a little steep. Each satellite speaker will cost you $179 and the subwoofer costs $329. Don’t go looking to buy them yet, though. They won’t be released until January.

Hive outdoor audio system

Hive outdoor audio systemThis simple and rugged speaker known as the Hive Audio System looks like it’s popping out of the ground and doing a bad Darth Vader impersonation. The Hive was specially designed for outdoor environments and comes with a sound tube that prevents the elements from damaging its precious innards, while amplifying sound.

The base gives it added stability, and since it’s wireless, the speaker can be linked to other units to form a “hive”. You know, these guys pride themselves on being the Borg of sound. Cool as the idea is, it’s just a concept. No word on when it may become something more.

tikitoonz tiki speakers say aloha

Getting ready to throw that last big pool party before the Summer comes to an end? There’s nothing better than a Luau themed party, complete with a variety of rum-and-fruit-juice-infused cocktails served in some Tiki Tumblers. What better way to complement your Luau but with some matching Tiki speakers (blasting some appropriate Elvis or Israel Ka’ano’i Kamakawiwo’ole, of course) to set the mood?

These fun new Luau Luey speakers from TikiToonz should do the trick just fine. Based on the classic Polynesian carvings, these outdoor speakers crank out 80 watts per channel and are made from durable weather-resistant enclosures. They’re perfect poolside or anywhere you want to set that retro Tiki bar look.

A pair of the speakers retails for $149.95 USD from the TikiToonz website. And no - it doesn’t matter how many Zombies or Mai Tais you serve me, I won’t wear that grass skirt and do the hula.

smoon ombrella lamp looks like a flying saucer overhead

This funky modern lighting fixture might be named for its umbrella-like shape, but to me it looks like some sort of alien jellyfish is about land its spacecraft in your living room.

Smoon Ombrella LED Lamp by Beau et Bien

Created by French furniture designers Beau & Bien, the Smoon Ombrella lamp gets its sculptural potato chip-like shape from custom cut Plexiglas. Towering overhead at 81″ tall, the canopy measures in a substantial 39.4″ x 59″.

The Ombrella uses modern LED lighting to cast its out-of-this-world glow. Thanks to its low power consumption, the lamp runs on a rechargeable battery pack that lets you place it anywhere in your home without wires. It’s even suitable for outdoor use. A single 10 hour charge gives you 6 days of run time before it runs out of juice.

The lamp is available in a several cool colors, including red, green, and my personal favorite, clear - which lets the surrounding colors show through.

The Smoon Ombrella lamp is available from Coliseum Shop for about $2200 USD. Now that might seem expensive to some of you, but think of it this way… you could buy 10 of these before you could get just one of those Freewheeler outdoor speakers.

The lo-tech Mowercycle

As a kid I used to beg my parents to just buy a mower that I didn’t have to push around the yard. Yet if they had managed to pick up one of these, I think I’d have wished for the usual push mower back.

If you are trying to either use less gas or go the eco-friendly route this mod would be a great weekend project. Sadly since this was only spotted in someone’s Flickr account, there are no details on it.

I’d like to know how successful the modder thinks their creation is. I’m sure now that this has made its way onto the internet someone else will try their hand at it. It just makes me even more happy that I have no yard to mow.

Garden Zombie protects your flowers from small children

When you walk by most peoples’ gardens, you’ll see some kind of cute statue, maybe of a gnome, or a deer. Those are nice and all, but what if you want something a little bit scary for your garden? I don’t know about you, but I love this Garden Zombie.

Garden Zombie

The picture shows the mulch all nice and neat around him, but I think I’d put some bare dirt around him to make it look like he was really digging his way out of the ground. That would certainly scare off any little kids that wandered too closely.

He’s a little expensive at $89, but he would totally be worth it. Well maybe not, it might give my grandma a heart attack if she stopped by to visit. Then again if I had a garden full of flowers that were actually alive, that would probably give her one too.

Garmin Oregon waterproof 3D GPS with touchscreen leaked

Details of Garmin’s upcoming GPS range refresh have been revealed at Buy.com, suggesting a new range of handheld GPS receivers.  The Oregon 200 will include a 3-inch color touchscreen (that’s outdoor-readable), high-sensitivity GPS, electronic compass, barometric altimeter and temperature sensor.  Map data will be courtesy of a 3D basemap as well as a digital elevation model, so hills shouldn’t be too much of a surprise, and the Oregon is waterproof.

There’s also the ability to transfer user routes, tracks, waypoints, geocaches and images between devices, through an unspecified wireless technology.  A MicroSD slot lets you augment storage with new land or water maps.  Buy.com have it listed as measuring 4.5 in x 2.3 in x 1.4 in and weighing just 6.8oz with two AA batteries.

The Oregon is obviously intended for the more adventurous explorers, rather than simply drivers, although there is an automotive profile setting (as well as marine, recreation, fitness and geocache).  No photo or availability details, but it’s on Buy.com for $420.
