Inventec Appliances, the Taiwan-based vendor of OKWAP-branded handsets, will shift its focus on the development and marketing of CDMA 2000 models instead of its previous focus on PHS (personal handy-phone system) and GSM handsets, according to George Chiu, director of the company's brand product division.
To cope with increasing cooperation with telecom services operators in Taiwan and China, the company plans to launch 3-5 new CDMA handsets in the first quarter of 2009 compared to four CDMA handsets launched in the first three quarters of 2008, Chiu noted.
In 2008, the company expects its total handset shipments, including PHS, GSM and CDMA models, to top 10 million units, of which PHS handsets will account for 70%.
In cooperation with China Telecom, the OKWAP-branded PHS handsets now take up about 30% of the PHS segment of China's handset market, Chiu stated.
China Telecom's recent acquisition of CDMA networks from China Network Communications will help Inventec expand its sales of CDMA handsets in the China market, Chiu asserted, noting that Inventec was one of the suppliers of the first-batch of five million CDMA handsets to be purchased by China Telecom.
According to market sources in China, China Telecom has estimated that the number of CDMA users in China will grow to 100 million by 2009 compared to 40 million currently.
