Mio Technology, the brand product subsidiary of Mitac International, plans to launch its first Windows Mobile-based 3.5G GPS handset in the first quarter of 2009, according to company sources.
Mio's GPS handset will be powered by 3.5G chipsets from Qualcomm and will also come with Mitac self-developed touch user interface, the Spirit, said the sources, noting that the GPS handset will also feature a built-in 3.2-megapixel auto-focus camera.
The launch of Mio's 3.5G GPS handset will probably run ahead of the planned launch of the Nuvifone handset by rival vendor Garmin slated in the first half of next year, according to estimates of market sources.
In other news, Mio is also expected to to launch a GPS-enabled MID (mobile Internet device) product by the end of the first quarter of 2009, indicated the market sources.
The MID will have a 7- or 8-inch TFT-LCD display, support 3G technology and run on Windows CE OS (operating system), the sources detailed.
