Orange is the last major UK mobile carrier to announce the upcoming availability of the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 (which will also be launched by O2, Vodafone, T-Mobile and Virgin).
Unlike the other British carriers, Orange will sell the Xperia X10 in black and, exclusively to Orange, also in white.
As you most probably already know, the Xperia X10 is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon CPU at 1GHz and features Android 1.6, a 4 inch WVGA touchscreen display, HSDPA, Wi-Fi, GPS, 8MP autofocus camera and 1GB of internal memory. Orange will offer the X10 in the UK starting early April, for free on select contracts.

Before introducing the Xperia X10, Orange UK plans to launch an online mobile games store for Java phones – on March 26.
Created in collaboration with HMV, the store is called HMV Mobile Games and it will allow customers to download games even if their phones use other networks than Orange’s.

Games will cost from £1 to £5. Orange’s customers will be able to add the cost of downloads to their monthly bills, while customers of other carriers will have to pay online.
According to RegHardware, users who want the HMV Mobile Games storefront app on their phone should text “hmv” to 87010.

Announced by Nokia and Intel at MWC 2010, MeeGo, the new versatile platform that combines Moblin and Maemo, will be used by Orange in some of its future devices based on the Intel Atom processor.
Orange says that these MeeGo devices (possibly including smartphones, tablets and netbooks) will come with a range of Orange multimedia services, like Orange Maps and Orange TV (which are part of the Orange Signature Services).
Orange’s MeeGo devices will also have a “customized home-screen”, just like many of the carrier’s handsets currently have.
Orange didn’t mention when its MeeGo devices will be launched. However, Intel and Nokia have previously announced that the very first MeeGo devices would only be available in late 2010, so they’re still about a year away.

Orange devices aside, Valtteri Halla from the MeeGo Technical Steering Group has announced (via SlashPhone) that, by the end of March, they will launch “the first and very raw baseline to a source and binary repository to build MeeGo trunk on Intel Atom boards and Nokia N900”.
While this doesn’t mean the N900 will be upgraded to MeeGo, it means that developers will be able to port the new platform to the device. For the moment, Nokia doesn’t seem to have any plans to officially upgrade the N900 to MeeGoo – you can watch this interview with Ari Jaaksi to find out more about MeeGo (and the N900).

This is the question folks Will Orange and T-Mobile UK merge in order to create the largest mobile conglomerate in the UK The move has been announced last year but it looks like it hasnt yet been approved. Both France Telecom and Deutsche Telekom are waiting for the move that will offer them a better position in UK. The merger might not go as initially thought as the Office of Fair Trading in the UK is worried that such a move might affect competition in mobile telecommunications i

Announced in September 2009, the merger between Orange UK and T-Mobile UK is not yet completed, as it awaits approval from UK authorities.
If all works out the way France Telecom and Deutsche Telekom want, the Orange – T-Mobile joint venture will become the largest British mobile carrier, with more than 30 million customers and about 37% of the UK mobile market.
However, according to the Office of Fair Trading (OFT), the proposed joint-venture “threatens significantly to affect competition in mobile telecommunications in the UK.” That’s why the OFT has asked for additional details about the merger from the European Commission.
Depending on the findings, the OFT might ask Britain’s competition regulatory board (the Competition Commission) to intervene.

Another concern was raised by 3 UK’s chief executive Kevin Russell, who declared:
“The proposed merger could lead to a concentration of 84 per cent of the nation’s 1800MHz radio spectrum in the hands of a single company. This spectrum is crucial for the realization of the Digital Britain initiative. For the merger to take place without significant harm to consumers and competition we believe the merged operator should be required to release at least a third of the 1800MHz spectrum it currently leases.”

A full week ahead of the grand Apple event set for January 27, rumors about the company’s iTablet / iSlate are showing up from all over the Web.
For example, Guardian.co.uk is implying that Apple has “approached” UK operators in order to negotiate a possible release of its upcoming tablet. Orange – which will likely offer the Apple tablet in France – is believed to be among these carriers. O2 and Vodafone are possibly in the game, too – especially since both are selling Apple’s iPhone in the UK.
A subsidized iTablet / iSlate would certainly attract more customers than an unsubsidized one – which could cost up to $1,000.

The Apple tablet is expected to be commercially available in the US starting March, but the UK will apparently get it later in the spring.
Meanwhile, you might be interested in the latest iPhone 4G concept.

While Apple is still quiet about the existence of its long-rumored tablet (or iSlate), the device has just been mentioned by Stéphane Richard, an exec at France Telecom (the company that owns the Orange brand).
In an interview with French channel Europe 1, Stéphane Richard confirmed that an Apple tablet “with webcam” would be launched by the end of this month, and Orange’s customers will be able to get it.
Details about pricing and other features have not been disclosed, but, even so, it looks like the Apple Tablet is pretty much real and will be unveiled really soon.
There’s a video (in French) found via NowhereElse.fr, showing Orange’s exec confirming the Apple Tablet (the confirmation is after the 6:00 minute):

(this is not the real Apple Tablet)
Assuming that Apple launches its tablet / iSlate via Orange France, it will most likely also release it via other carriers around the world, too – maybe AT&T and Verizon in the US.

Orange UK will release mobile HD Voice in the UK this year. The network carrier is already working with unnamed top phone makers on developing HD Voice-ready handsets. FYI, mobile HD Voice is based on the WB-AMR (Wideband Adaptive Multi-Rate) speech codec, which uses a wide speech bandwidth (50–7000 Hz), which is capable of providing enhanced sound quality without using extra network resources. Orange UK’s mobile HD Voice trials should be announced in the next few months, while a full nationwide roll-out is planned for later this year. [Press Release]
