I’ve seen a ton of screwed up knock off consoles, but this one has to be the strangest. Is it an Xbox, PlayStation 2, 3, or something else? What can you say about a modern console that sports the classic 9-pin controller ports of an Atari 2600 or Vic-20? I can only surmise that crackheads are now included in the design process.
Notice the Bat-wing controllers. It’s made by Cheer-Tech Industries of Hong Kong and includes visual elements from several modern consoles, tweaking them just enough to keep them safe from copyright infringements. It will play a handful of built-in games and comes with two controllers, only one with a rumble feature. Right now, no one seems to know if it plays games from recent consoles, but I doubt it.
As far as knock offs go this one wins hands down for strangeness.

Connectland’s USB Moody Ball may look awfully soothing, yet awfully familiar at first glance. If so, you’re probably conjuring up memories of the Ambient Orb, which this device no doubt takes more than a few design cues from. Nevertheless, this USB-powered soul soother automatically changes hues to ease your mind, is constructed from “bump-resistant” materials and weighs in at 179-grams. Best of all, this one’s just $20, but convincing your boss to leave the office lights dim just so your Moody Ball can have a greater effect will be the real challenge.

We’ve seen, shall we say,
creative uses of well-known brands to sell cheapo gear in the past, but it’s not often we see a case as brazen as the one above, which cavalierly throws Sony’s familiar logo onto a generic Chinese PMP in an attempt, presumably, to give it a bit more cred. Of course, there is the little matter that the PMP boasts of its ability to play NES games, and the fact that it uses SD cards instead of Sony’s beloved Memory Sticks — which are certainly welcome features, but not exactly ones high on Sony’s list. If for some reason you want to take a chance on the player, however, you can currently find one on eBay at the link below, with the bidding hovering around the $25 mark (as of this writing).

Well, would you look at that. If not for the gaudy packaging, $69.99 price tag and blatant Oasis Media branding, we’d swear the Playr was a T-Mobile Shadow (or HTC’s P3300, we guess). Yep, this knockoff does a fairly decent job of mirroring its inspirer, sports 2GB of storage and a miniSD expansion slot, comes with 35 free eMUSIC downloads and includes a built-in media player for good measure. Interestingly, we get the feeling that this thing won’t actually send or receive calls, but if you’re quick, no one will even notice.

You know the Nabaztag — the lovable, WiFi-sporting, olfactory-equipped plastic rabbit which wormed its way into our hearts. Sure, everyone wants to nestle up to the little critter’s twinkling LEDs and soothing expression, but what about Nabaztag’s pitiful, cheap, single-function cousin, the Rabbit Sensor Night Light? That’s right — not a lot of love for this one-trick-pony, a simple night light which won’t play back your favorite podcasts, recognize the scent of a carrot, read you a book, or act as your Cha’Dich during your trial on Qo’noS concerning the attack at Khitomer… but it will glow softly through its pink plastic casing. Look, it automatically turns on when it detects movement, and it’s dirt cheap ($12.99) — isn’t that enough?

For intents and purposes, we’re thoroughly numb to iPod nano knockoffs at this point, but when some company goes beyond the call of duty to uglify its copycat attempt, we can’t help give credit. Friendship Star International Limited, which earns major kudos on name alone, has created the nano-inspired FD-1888P for those adamantly against click wheels (and products of authenticity). The unit features a 1.8-inch color display, integrated speaker, FM tuner, rechargeable Li-ion, support for MP3, MP4, MTV and AMV file formats and a totally bodacious D-pad control scheme. Pricing information is reserved for those willing to buy hundreds at the time, so who knows how long that will remain a mystery.
