The new wireless broadband network enables REDtone to quickly and cost-effectively expand its services in the region
KOTA KINABALU, Malaysia – 20 August 2008 –
Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) announced today that REDtone, Malaysia’s leading alternative communications, multimedia innovator and service provider, has launched East Malaysia’s first WiMAX broadband services, powered by Motorola technology. The first phase of the WiMAX network covers Kota Kinabalu business district, enabling high speed Internet access as well as data applications for enterprises.
In an effort to expand its broadband services offerings in East Malaysia, REDtone decided to establish a new network using WiMAX technology which ensures quick deployment at a lower cost compared to fixed line solutions. Motorola is working with REDtone to supply and deploy WiMAX 2.3GHz equipment at base sites and install customer premises equipment (CPE) to provide broadband services in major business districts in the first phase of the plan.
“The next generation wireless broadband network expands our service offerings. We are now able to meet our customers’ growing demand for high speed Internet connection and advanced data applications,” said Zainal Amanshah, group chief executive officer of REDtone International Berhad.
“We selected Motorola for this WiMAX project after a thorough evaluation and several field trials. Motorola has extensive WiMAX experience, its system is easy to set up and requires minimum installation footprint, which in the process helps reduce deployment time and lowers overall operational cost, “Zainal added. “We are also impressed by Motorola’s ability to provide advanced features like MIMO-B in a live system. These features will ensure a smooth network upgrade when we need to increase system capacity in the future.”
“We are pleased to work with REDtone in the supply and deployment of a high performance, reliable and scalable WiMAX network for enhanced Internet services and advanced applications. The commercial launch of REDtone’s WiMAX services reinforces our leadership in providing state-of-the-art WiMAX solutions to operators worldwide, enabling fixed and mobile WiMAX experience,” said Eric Starnes, vice president, sales of Asia, Motorola Home & Networks Mobility. “With our expertise in media mobility, Motorola is confident of assisting REDtone in their long term planning of wireless broadband services.”
Besides providing broadband services to enterprise customers, REDtone is also planning to work with service providers based in Sabah and Sarawak to provide broadband services to the general public. The lack of capacity is causing slow Internet connection during peak period. The new WiMAX network will bring additional bandwidth to the areas and improve overall user experiences, generating more business opportunities for REDtone and local service providers.
Motorola now has 21 contracts for commercial WiMAX networks in 17 countries around the world. For more information about Motorola wi4 WiMAX solutions, please visit: www.motorola.com/wimax.

SINGAPORE (Reuters) -
Motorola Inc, the world's third-largest handset maker, unveiled two new low-end phones on Wednesday that allow users to listen to songs and surf the Web.
Motorola, which has failed to come up with a strong follow-up to its once-lauded Razr phone, has lost out to market leader Nokia and other rivals since early last year.
The firm, which faces stiff competition from handsets such as Apple Inc's popular touch-screen iPhone, has said it would launch 50 new devices this year, including advanced phones.
One new handset is a music-enabled camera phone -- the W388 -- that sells for under $100.
The second device is a low-end third-generation (3G) mobile phone -- the VE538 -- which goes for less than $250 and offers one-click mobile social networking, photo uploading and blogging at various websites.
The two new products will be shipped to Asia-Pacific markets first -- before being rolled out globally -- by September.
"People don't buy products any more, they buy what those products can create for them -- solutions, dreams, whatever they are looking for in life," said Ian Chapman-Banks, the General Manager for Motorola's Mobile Devices business in Asia. In July, Motorola posted a small quarterly profit after more than a year of disappointing results, as it sold more mobile phones than expected, thanks to strength in North America.
The firm, which narrowly kept its No. 3 ranking in the global phone market ahead of South Korea's LG Electronics Inc, also forecast a full-year profit that beat Wall Street estimates as it plans new products and further cost cutting.
It plans to separate its mobile phone unit from the rest of the company in the third quarter of 2009.

What Motorola has been up to these past few months, we may never know for sure, but in the meantime they’ve rolled out the old Motorola Q9h in a silver color, plus Windows Mobile 6.1 out of the box.
This reworked version of the Motorola Q9h should already be available at your local AT&T stores, though we haven’t heard yet of exact pricing or even a release date.

In any case, this one is quite a looker, and with Windows Mobile 6.1 coming standard as its OS, there shouldn’t be much to worry about when deciding to purchase this phone or not. You do need a new smartphone, right? Head on over to your local AT&T store for more info.

Motorola has speeded up the outsourcing of 3.5G handsets by teaming up with Foxconn International Holdings (FIH)/Chi Mei Communication Systems (CMCS) for the ODM production of 3.5G handsets for 2009, according to sources in the Taiwan handset industry.
FIH/CMCS will utilize chipsets from Qualcomm in the production of 3.5G handsets for Motorola, the sources indicated.
FIH/CMCS'3.5G handset orders from Motorola came after the US branded handset vendor already placed ODM 3.5G handset orders with Taiwan-based Qisda and Compal Communications, said the sources, noting that Qisda will start shipping 3.5G handsets to Motorola in September and Compal will follow suit in the fourth quarter.
In other news, FIH's share price dropped 24% to close at HK$5.84 (US$0.75) on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (HKSE) on August 18 after the company, on August 15, warned investors that its earnings for the first half of this year will decline 'significantly' from a year earlier.
The Chinese-language Economic Daily News (EDN) quoted JP Morgan as indicating that FIH is expected to see its net profits decline 8% to US$660 million in 2008 from last year's US$721 million.

I can’t call it a piece of beauty from the FCC image, but this is undoubtedly the new headphone from Motorola that received FCC’s nod. The specialty of the Motorola JayZ headphone is that it can be used simultaneously with your Bluetooth audio device and your Bluetooth cell phone. This means if your cell phone rings while you are listening to music you can simply transfer the call on your JayZ headphone and your music automatically restarts once you end your phone call with the push of a button. JayZ supports both Hands-free and Headset Bluetooth profile for calls and Advanced Audio Distribution and Audio Video Remote Control profiles for wireless music.

It is for the first time in many months that I am confused about the way I should begin the talk about the leaked images of the Motorola V70 Retro. Agreed that the makers over Motorola had a retro design in mind but I believe that they have gone overboard with the designing here. The pictures reveal a keyboard that swivels open (much like a retro phone) but what is surprising is the choice of the display which is extremely bizarre with a rounded screen adorning the phone. With a 5 megapixel camera intact, it would surely be a heavily priced option but then going by the vague design, I don’t think it would find many takers here. The only hope could be a bunch of some funny old guys but then they would have to withdraw on their social security to be able to afford this one. More Images after the Jump.
