Microsoft Office 2010 RC available for download

ms-office-2010-rc

Microsoft just sent an e-mail stating that Office 2010 Release Candidate (RC) is now available for download to Connect users. Users beta-testing the suite can go ahead to Microsoft Connect and download the latest builds – v4734.1000 for 2010 client and build v4730.1010 for server products.

However, one important thing to know is that you’ll need to request new product key as beta keys won’t be allowed to activate the RC.

This probably will be the only RC as a RTM build is expected to hit this June.

WinMo 6.5.3 Specs Come to Light, No Stylus Necessary

Here’s a crazy thought: smartphone fans everywhere are excited about an OS update in which the number has 2 periods ahead of it. That type of update is normally reserved specifically for bug fixes and nothing else. Yet, Windows Mobile 6.5.3 is being discussed by folks in the know as a rather substantial update that’s supposed to bridge the gap between 6.5 and 7. What in the world?

We know about 6.5.3 through the announcement of the Sony Ericsson Aspen, a device that launches Q2 2010 with WinMo 6.5.3 natively on it. But until today we didn’t really know beyond the usual speculation as to what the update would involve. Boy Genius was nice enough to provide a list covering the notable feature changes.

Not too shabby for a bug fix update. My favorite? Multitouch, with no need for a stylus. That is a wonderful thought, and it indicates that this is obvious direction Microsoft is heading in when considering the forthcoming WM7 update later this year. Also notable is the drag and drop feature, a smooth improvement to the effectiveness of the Start Menu. What else do you see in this update that would help make your WinMo experience better?

Tegra-based Zune phone confirmed for MWC?

Last week, Microsoft has reportedly confirmed that Windows Mobile 7 would be launched at MWC, and now it looks like the long-rumored Zune phone is also confirmed.

Not by Microsoft, but by MuyComputer, a Spanish website which claims that the Zune phone will certainly be presented this month in Barcelona.

Moreover, they also claim that the Zune phone will be based on Nvidia’s Tegra platform (which is already used by Microsoft for its Zunde HD player).

The Zune phone will probably run Windows Mobile 7. MuyComputer speculates that the phone weighs about 70 grams and features Wi-Fi, HDMI video output and a touchscreen display with a 272 x 480 pixel resolution.

(this is not the real Zune phone, it’s just a rendering)

To be honest, I’d expect the Zune phone to have a WVGA (480 x 800) touchscreen display, but we’ll see what’s it all about when MWC debuts.

microsoft looking for video game testers, offers free software

Citizens of the United States of America, young and old, noob or hardcore, Xbox loyalist, Wii fanatic or PS3 fanboy, hear ye hear ye! Microsoft is looking for video game testers! The most likely location of the “Playtest facility” will be in Microsoft’s Seattle compound, but they’re encouraging everyone from the USA to sign up.

microsoft tester

Even minors can be part of Microsoft’s program, as long as their parent or guardian consents. As is standard procedure, Microsoft didn’t say what games will be tested, but the Playtest webpage does say that there will be a variety of games on a variety of platforms. The FAQ also says that Playtesters have to arrive early so they can secure a parking space. Awesome.

No word on the “free software” though. Let’s hope it’s not MS Word. Or Vista.

Nintendo reportedly turned down Project Natal before Microsoft

Project Natal

Microsoft may be gathering all the attention for its controller-free motion-sensing gaming, known as Project Natal. But according to a CVG source, Nintendo’s Satoru Iwata apprarently turned it down before it was snagged by Microsoft almost a year later.

The rumor claims that the guys at 3DV Systems – who’ve developed the tech – initially demoed the tech to Nintendo and though Iwata was impressed, he refrained from adopting it because of its price.

“3DV showed off a camera that detected motion in 3D, and had voice recognition – but Iwata-San was unconvinced he could sell it at a Nintendo price point. He also had some worries around latency during gameplay.”

Of course, this is a rumor but the reports that claim Microsoft to remove a chip from Natal to reduce on R&D costs, somewhat echoes Iwata’s concerns.

For the uninitiated, Project Natal introduces a unique way of gaming where it does not include any controller. With motion detection and an integrated camera, the player’s gestures act as controller commands. It is set to launch this year at a price of around $80.

Microsoft confirms Windows Mobile 7 announcement for MWC. Old i-mate running WM7 spotted?

While reporting its latest financial results, Microsoft has apparently confirmed that Windows Mobile 7 would be announced really soon – most probably at MWC 2010 (15 – 18 February).

According to Electronista, Microsoft’s CFO Peter Klein declared that the company’s new version of Windows Mobile would be unveiled “in a few weeks.”

This is in line with some of the latest rumors we’ve heard about WM7, so let’s hope Microsoft will indeed announce the new OS next month.

Until then, I must mention that the minimum required specs for WM7 that we’ve posted a few days ago may not be accurate.

It seems as though Eldar Murtazin was wrong, as he received the “correct” requirements shortly after the wrong ones, and these include:

Eldar Murtazin has also received a photo of some old i-mate JASJAR smartphone that seems to be running Windows Mobile 7 (with a 640 x 480 pixels resolution):

Windows Mobile 7 QVGA

Strange enough, the original i-mate JASJAR only has 64MB RAM and 128MB ROM, so it couldn’t run WM7 if the above-mentioned specs are correct.

Well, I guess we won’t know the exact WM7 requirements until Microsoft finally announces the OS.
