PX-3600 console has an identity crisis

PX-3600 console
I’ve seen a ton of screwed up knock off consoles, but this one has to be the strangest. Is it an Xbox, PlayStation 2, 3, or something else? What can you say about a modern console that sports the classic 9-pin controller ports of an Atari 2600 or Vic-20? I can only surmise that crackheads are now included in the design process.

Notice the Bat-wing controllers. It’s made by Cheer-Tech Industries of Hong Kong and includes visual elements from several modern consoles, tweaking them just enough to keep them safe from copyright infringements. It will play a handful of built-in games and comes with two controllers, only one with a rumble feature. Right now, no one seems to know if it plays games from recent consoles, but I doubt it.

As far as knock offs go this one wins hands down for strangeness.

Etch-a-Sketch goes digital

Deluxe TV Etch A Sketch
Etch-a-Sketch is finally coming into the 21st century. The Wired Etch-a-Sketch is the digital version of the classic toy that has entertained children as well as bored adults for the past several decades. The TV Etch-a-Sketch takes the toy to the next level.

It has a wide variety of new modes, like Cool Drawing Tools, Trace A Pic, Super Sketch and Connecting the Dots. The controller has the two classic Etch-a-Sketch knobs to keep the nostalgic feel of the original. What about shaking it and clearing what you’ve drawn? That’s the most classic part, after all. Yes, it has that feature too. Just shake the controller and the screen will clear.

You can get one for just $13. Looks like a great upgrade for the classic toy.

2007 game sales topped by Nintendo Wii, Halo 3

Halo 3 tops the list of best selling games of 2007NDP has released the year-end sales numbers for non-PC video games in 2007 showing record figures for the industry. The year 2007 brought an impressive 43 percent increase in sales compared to 2006 with a total of $17.94 billion.

Game Consoles
The highlights of the year come as no surprise if you’ve been reading our coverage of game console sales with the Nintendo Wii topping the list of most console units sold at 6.29 million. The Wii spent the year at a lower price-point than rival consoles and caught the attention of a wide range of gamers. Behind the Wii in console sales was the Xbox 360 with 4.62 million units sold in 2007, which was helped out a little bit by the wildly popular Halo 3. Next in line was not Sony’s new Playstation 3 but it’s older brother, the Playstation 2. Sony moved 3.97 million PS2 units in 2007 and 2.56 million PS3s.

Handheld Game Consoles

If you thought Nintendo had some impressive numbers with the Wii you might want to take a look at the numbers they pulled off with the Nintendo DS. In 2007 the company moved 8.5 million DS’s bringing the count to 17.65 million units for the life of the DS. These numbers were followed by Sony’s Playstation Portable which also beat out the PS3 with 3.82 units sold in 2007.

Games
An impressive feat was pulled of by Microsoft and Bungie this year with the release of Halo 3 bringing in $170 million in sales its first day and $300 million in the first week. Halo 3 topped the game software sales list selling 4.82 million units in 2007. What makes this even more impressive is that Halo 3 didn’t launch until the end of September and still managed to beat out the Wii Play which shipped 4.12 million units with an addition 7+ months to do it. The Wii Play features short “learning” games for the Nintendo Wii and came packaged with an extra motion-sensitive controller. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock for the PS2 followed in the number 3 and 4 spot with 3.04 million copies and 2.72 million copies sold, respectively.

Rock Band Stage Kit coming soon?

So the word on the streets is that there is a new Rock Band addition headed our way come 6/23/08. Sadly its not a new accordion or harmonica part for some of these songs, instead it appears to be some sort of official Rock Band special effects kit with a fog machine and generic stage lighting that is apparently synchronized with the music.

There was even a picture of the suspected kit up on the GameStop website for a short moment, but that’s gone, however “the memory remains”. The listing is apparently still up on the site for $99.99.

Hopefully before then they can come out with some more guitar choices, or a special amp stack that will connect to your 360 and provide awesome rock show sound. There are just so many more things they could do around the game than add some cheesy stage effects, especially when they’ll only be seen in locked basements and garages around the world.

Halo 3 Covenant Weapons meets Laser Tag thanks to Jasman Toys

347Are you looking for that perfect gift for the Halo 3 fan in your life? How about getting them some replica Covenant weapons with laser pursuit technology from Jasman Toys. Think of this as Halo 3 Covenant weapons meets laser tag. Jasman sells three different Covenant weapons - the Plasma pistol, the Plasma rifle, and the Energy sword. Each of these weapons perform like the ones in the game - they vibrate, make sounds, have lights, and even recoil when fired. The plasma rifle even “overheats” when used for long periods of time! (overheating here means the heat exchange flanges open up).

Each weapon comes with a target register which registers hits from other weapons. You can use these weapons to play your own real life capture the flag, team battle, and free for all.

Ahh.. if they only had Marine weapons too..

Guitar Wizard rocks CES: uses real guitar

uses real guitar
Allegro Rainbow’s Guitar video game has been rocking CES this week. Music Wizard Group’s Guitar Wizard video game is a step forward after their successful Piano Wizard title, but Guitar Wizard is not just another version of Guitar Hero. It’s actually an educational video game that’s designed to help kids of all ages to read and play music.

Guitar Wizard will be available on both PC and MAC platforms, and will come with an actual honest to God Washburn guitar and MIDI pickup. Plus, the software is compatible with just about any MIDI guitar.

The company claims players will be rocking out and reading music in just minutes. I don’t know about that, but I like the idea of an easy way to learn guitar.
