iMuffs by Wi-Gear Review

The iMuffs MB210 by Wi-Gear are multi-functional headphones for the iPod Nano, iPod Video (5G), iPod Mini, iPod (3G) and iPod (4G). Wi-Gear has set out to “cut the cord” with this headset. Although not specifically designed for other devices, you can also use these headphones with the iPhone, Bluetooth enabled mobile phones and properly equipped computers.

1-480x360

The behind-the-neck headphones are surprisingly lightweight and flexible to reduce ear fatigue. The iMuffs hold very well whether you’re enjoying music around the house or going for a brief jog. The positioning of the headphones gives more direct, clear bass tones with less sound loss. Designed with the right-handed population in mind, the right earpiece has a convenient volume control as well as pause, forward and backward navigation controls.

Powered by a rechargeable lithium polymer 550mAh battery, the iMuffs claim to give users up to 20 hours of continuous playback. We found the actual time to be more in the 16 to 18 hour range, which is still not bad. Recharging the battery is made easy by virtue of the standard micro USB port.

Connecting your iPod is very simple, just plug it in and turn it on. The navigation buttons are very responsive to touch and quite easy to press making it impossible to lay down on your right side while listening to music. The iMuffs also connect to the iPhone as well as other Bluetooth 2.0 enabled mobile phones. The integrated Bluetooth supports the A2DP, AVRCP, HFP and HSP profiles. You can also use this headset to place calls without the use of the handset itself. We were able to use the iPhone via Bluetooth to place calls, but the Bluetooth dongle is needed to actually listen to music.

3-480x360

Audio playback as well as call quality are both about average. We were able to listen to music within a close proximity to the actual device with little to no interference. When you go into another room, or put a large object between your and your music device you will almost always here static until in direct sight of your device, but that is to be expected from most Bluetooth devices.

The iMuffs have a 20Hz - 20kHz frequency range, which is much better than a lot of headphones today. However their use of Bluetooth wireless means sound quality undergoes compression and, as such, these aren’t the wireless cans for audiophiles (who would do better looking at Sleek Audio’s W-1 system).  The headphones reach up to 40 feet away, making them perfect for doing work around the house or hitting the gym. They also use Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP), allowing incoming calls to interrupt music. Without A2DP users would need two separate headsets, one for music and one for Bluetooth calling. While noise-canceling technology is present in the iMuffs, it is very limited and by no means advanced. In locations where there is moderate background noise, the headphones phase out noise pretty well. However in situations where there are high noise levels, the noise cancelation fails to perform very well.

If the iMuffs sound like a perfect holiday gift, even for yourself, you may now order them directly from Wi-Gear for $149.99.

flick fishing 1.2 - iphone game gets update

The first release of the iPhone game Flick Fishing got rave reviews. Now Freeverse, the creators of Flick Fishing, are adding even more fishing fun with version 1.2 of the game.

Aside from new fish and new fishing spots, the update also brings a tournament mode to the game. In tournament mode, players can compete against the computer, against another player on the same iPhone/iPod Touch, or even via Wi-Fi versus other flick fishermen.

For those who are unfamiliar with the game, Flick Fishing is an intuitive and beautiful fishing game. Players have to find the right combination of bait, location and flicking & reeling techniques that works with each type of fish. It definitely does not get its name from the fact that players cast the line with just a flick of their wrist. Nope. Do you know why it’s called Flick Fishing?

Like all iPhone/iPod Touch apps, Flick Fishing is available at Apple’s App Store for $0.99. Honestly I don’t know how it plays, because I don’t have an iPhone, but Freeverse has a video demo over at their site so go check that out if you’re interested.

Apple top App Store downloads for 2008 revealed

Apple have announced the top downloads from the App Store in 2008.  Available to view in iTunes, the list ranks both paid and free software, and as well as the top ten apps it splits them down into their respective categories: games, entertainment, utilities, social networking and music.

apple_appstore_top_apps_2008_1-480x280

There aren’t a huge number of surprises in the list.  Some of the apps that have performed the best are those that have been present in the App Store pretty much from its inception, including Labyrinth Lite and AIM.  Social networking is also a popular choice, with Facebook’s app in the top ten of free software, while Google Earth is also present.

In paid apps, gaming occupies most of the top ten spots.  Crash Bandicoot, Super Monkey Ball, Texas Hold’em and Moto Chaser are all among the most paid-for software.  Full details here [link opens iTunes].

iPod Touch 2G is faster than iPhone

So you thought iPod Touch was just a cellular radio-less version of the iPhone? Well, this may sound true for the first 1st gen iPod Touch, but the case is a bit different with the successor. Handheld Games Corp’s CEO, Thomas Fessler claims that the iPod Touch 2G houses a 532MHz processor as compared to iPhone 3G that has a processor running at a clock speed of 412MHz.

“Our first step to increase fps performance was to introduce hardware dependent levels of detail. Where we can easily display two 1500 polygon tennis players with 32 bones each on the iPod touch 2G and maintain fast and fluid game play, the original iPod touch just chokes, and in some instances so do the iPhones. To speed up the touch, we reduced the players to 800 polygons in farther away moments of gameplay, and are now using 1000 polygon models for close ups, bringing the original iPod touch game play performance level close to that of the iPhone 3G. We’ve taken this approach across the board with great results.”

Handheld Games sells their maiden game, TouchSports Tennis in the App Store for $4.99. The first version is expected to lag in devices except iPod Touch 2G. the company has revealed that their next version is on their way for older versions giving better playback framerate.

Sonos Controller app for iPhone & iPod touch, plus Pandora & Last.fm with 2.7 update

Sonos have released their first official app for the iPhone and iPod touch, which adds controller functionality to the touchscreen devices and allows them to manage the company’s networked audio players.  The software, which is a free download through the AppStore, brings not only the full functionality from the official Sonos controller but adds touch-control and text-driven media searching.

Full multi-room control is possible, with menu options for playing the same or different music in each zone, as well as silencing them all with a single touch, and there’s also Napster and Rhapsody access.  Pandora custom internet radio has also been added, together with fifteen thousand radio stations and Last.fm integration in the new system firmware (version 2.7).

Since the Apple devices lack the proprietary wireless networking that Sonos uses, the iPhone or iPod touch relies on your home WiFi to connect to the Sonos system.  The software should be available on the AppStore today; if these photos from Engadget have whet your appetite you can see a video demo here.  As for the new firmware, v2.7, it’s also available today for all Sonos users.

Tranquility app for stressed iPhone and iPod touch users

Upset because your iPhone 3G isn’t functioning properly? Or maybe the smartphone’s ultracompact USB power adapter is stressing you? Can’t sleep at night because of Microsoft’s decision to continue with selling licenses for WinMo? Your girlfriend / boyfriend left you?

Well worry not, because a company called Freeverse has just launched Tranquility: an app for stressed iPhone and iPod touch users.

Coming with professionally-recorded sounds and a set of images said to be “beautiful”, Tranquility is created to make sure you are stressed no more. The application can also help you sleep better, or at least that’s what Freeverse says.

Here are all of Tranquility’s features:

Also, users can choose from a handful of “aural landscapes” like: Zen Meditation, Ocean Waves, Flowing Water, Rain, White Noise, Thunderstorms and Mechanical Hums. I’m not sure how something mechanical can be relaxing, but hey, we have to believe Freeverse on this one.

Get your own Tranquility app from here or from here (iTunes direct link). It costs only $0.99 and I have a hunch it’ll be a killer app. Because there are lots of stressed iPhone and iPod owners out there, you know.

Obama rocks the iPhone

Obama rocks the iPhoneThe Vice Presidential debate this evening will take place in about a half hour. Earlier Obama for America announced the release of Obama ‘08: The Official Application for iPhone and iPod touch. Much like the USB bracelet we told you about, it’s another way to connect with the candidate. The app is free and is available for download now. The app makes it easier for Obama volunteers to get involved by making calls on the candidate’s behalf.

You’ll also get news updates, news coverage, local events, media from the campaign trail, and of course Obama’s and Biden’s stance on “essential issues facing Americans.” I’m interested to see what kind of affect this has on election results as I don’t see anything like this coming from McCain’s camp. It makes it clear that the youth/tech savvy vote is Obama’s. And he’s making it easy for them to get more involved. McCain may take credit for the Blackberry, but good luck getting an email from him anytime soon. I’m pretty sure his phone still has a rotary dial.
