After only two weeks since it released the beta version, Opera has now outed the final edition of Opera Mini 4.2.

SonicWALL Phishing and Spam IQ Quiz

SonicWallquiz_610x451

Think you’re good at spotting phishing and spam emails? Go ahead and take the SonicWALL Phishing and Spam IQ Quiz. I ended up getting 9 out of 10 – missing the 2nd question (which I still disagree with… but whatever).  According to SonicWALL (and via News.com), only 59.4 percent of test takers so far this year have been able to properly identify legitimate email – down from 77.8 percent in 2004. Only 7.4 percent of test takers this year were able to correctly identify every email they were presented. On the positive side – more people are able to identify phishing scams – with 86.1 percent catching the phishing emails.

LaCie Internet Space keeps the web with you

Everyone is always talking about the “cloud” and syncing up your data across multiple platforms so that it is accessible from anywhere. LaCie has obviously listened to this cloud talk and have come out with the Internet Space, which looks nice and provides a valuable function at the same time.

lacie-internet-space

One thing that must first be noted about this LaCie model is that is good looking. It’s so simple that it could easily act as a companion to any of the newer notebook or desktop set ups that have come out of the gates boasting style as a feature.

But beyond its exterior, the LaCie Internet Space features a 500GB hard drive. But the real beauty of it is that you can sync up your computers and mobile devices with the device. Then, you can access your information from any computer from anywhere, just by visiting their website at www.homelacie.com. It will cost you $205 and five minutes to set up, but that seems pretty worth it to put all of your data within a browser’s reach.

T-Mobile Android G1 tethering over USB now possible

What good would an open-source, do-it-all (almost) smartphone be if you can’t tether it to your laptop and share its Internet connection? Yep, no good, that’s why if you’re one of the eager young’ns who’ve jumped the gun on the very first Android-powered phone–the T-Mobile G1–then you’ve got to check out this clever sort of hack.

A so-called Android proxy app has been devised by a certain Graham Stewart, a 28 yr old Software Consultant in Boulder, CO. It’s not supported officially by neither Google nor T-Mobile (and no, not even HTC), but if you try hard enough you’ll probably be able to do it successfully. It allows users to share the T-Mobile G1’s internet connection with PCs/laptops through a USB connection.

All that’s needed to make the method work is to install the Android proxy app and connect the G1 via USB, then follow the instructions provided. Most of those who have tried this method have reported success, however we have not tested this method ourselves and so we cannot verify.

If anything, the curious may always try. Check out the full instructions via the first link below.

Aigo P8860 MID vs. Archos 5 PMP: Internet device battle

A few months back, when we wondered out loud about abbreviations, one of the easiest targets was the ultraportable device market.  Mobile Internet Devices, Ultramobile PCs, Personal Media Players; as manufacturers rush to grant their gadgets more functionality, all seem to end up overlapping.  The Archos Internet Media Tablet isn’t a MID, not by Archos’ own definition anyway, but it does offer internet access, on a touchscreen tablet, in a device that’s certainly mobile.  Pocketables have been comparing the Archos 5 (soon to be available with integrated 3G WWAN, remember) with the Aigo P8860, a gadget which certainly does claim to be a MID.

aigo_p8860_archos_5_pmp_comparison_1

Size-wise, the Aigo’s slide-out QWERTY keyboard gives it some extra heft over the Archos PMP, which can be as thin as 0.5-inches if you go for the smaller-capacity 60GB version.  The Archos range is cheaper, too, from $349 to $449 (with 60GB to 250GB capacity), while the Aigo comes in at $699 (with a mere 4GB SSD).  Internet browsing is the real surprise: while you’d expect the faster P8860 to wipe the floor with the Archos 5, in actual fact there’s no stand-out winner with webpage loading times.

Of course, the two devices aren’t intended to be rivals, but considering the core functionality overlap - internet access - it does make you wonder which better satisfies the whole initial MID concept.  Unless the prices of “true” MIDs come down, the casual buyer is unlikely to even consider them, never mind pick the over and above the internet-enabled PMP alternative.

Archos 5g HSDPA PMP French pricing leaks

Archos’ latest range of Internet Media Tablets, the 5 and 7, are on sale in many markets worldwide, but if you want the 5g version with integrated HSDPA you’ll have to head to France.  SFR is so-far the only carrier to have publicly signed up to the WWAN PMP; their official launch is expected later this week, but they’ve been scooped by November’s issue of Stuff magazine.

archos_5g_price_leak

The “Archos 5 3G+”, as Stuff call it, will cost €279 ($363) with a monthly data charge of €29.90 ($39).  It’ll be launched alongside a rebadged version of the Aigo P8860 called the “MI PC Pocket”, also 3G enabled, priced at €349 ($448) with the same monthly data package.

Those prices both seem pretty steep, though there’s no indication as to whether they’re contract-free or require a 12-24 month service agreement.  If the latter, then it would’ve been nice for SFR to subsidize the Archos 5g a little more.  No word on exact release date.

T-Mobile USA 3G coverage broken down by city

t_mobile_logoT-Mobile USA have announced further expansion of their 3G network, with less than a week until their flagship internet cellphone, the Android-powered G1, is released on October 22nd.  The numbers certainly seem to have shot up since the last count, but a lot of that is down to a different way of expressing coverage areas.  Having received many calls asking for city-by-city breakdowns of 3G availability, the carrier told SlashGear, they’re now shifting to referring to coverage by cities.

That, obviously, means far bigger numbers than the old system, which referred to areas as “markets”.  The figures now stand at 92 major cities with 3G coverage (across 21 markets) today, with that rising to 95 by next Wednesday’s T-Mobile G1 launch.  By the end of November, the carrier is claiming it will have more than 120 major cities covered with high-speed HSDPA access.

T-Mobile are not making any accurate public predictions beyond November, but with coverage still lagging behind EV-DO provisions from Verizon and Sprint they’ll need to continue pushing the rollout through 2009.  Still, it’s good to know that fewer G1 owners will be left twiddling their thumbs at EDGE speeds.  Make sure to check out the Android Community review of the T-Mobile G1 powered by Google Android.

T-Mobile USA Further Expands Commercial 3G Network Availability in 2008

Washington, D.C., and Surrounding Areas to Launch in November; More than 120 Major Cities with T-Mobile 3G Coverage by End of Year

BELLEVUE, Wash. — Oct. 17, 2008 — T-Mobile USA, Inc. continues to aggressively expand its third-generation (3G) wireless broadband service, announcing today that the company will launch 3G service in and around the Washington, D.C., area in late November. At that time, the number of locations with T-Mobile’s 3G coverage will amount to more than 120 major cities across the top population centers nationwide.

This week, T-Mobile 3G coverage launched in the Sacramento, Calif., area bringing the number of major cities currently served with 3G coverage to 92. Next week, communities in and around Memphis, Tenn., and Tampa, Fla., will be the latest to reap the benefits of wireless broadband service from T-Mobile.

“We’re excited about the broad scale and reach of our 3G footprint in major cities across the nation, already accessible by tens of millions of consumers. And today, where the majority of our customers use data services, our 3G network is there for them,“ said Neville Ray, senior vice president of Engineering and Operations, T-Mobile USA. “Our 3G footprint will continue to expand, and we look forward to continuing to deliver the rich experiences a 3G network can bring to T-Mobile customers.”

T-Mobile’s Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS)/High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) data network supports multiple 3G-capable phones available from T-Mobile, including the HSDPA-enabled T-Mobile G1 with Google, coming to select T-Mobile retail stores and available online on Oct. 22. The network can deliver download speeds of up to 1 Mbps; the faster speeds allow T-Mobile customers with 3G-capable handsets to take full advantage of new and emerging applications, such as the wide array of unique services accessible on the T-Mobile G1.
