Sony EVDO/HSPA VAIO netbook revealed by FCC

Sony have received FCC approval for a WiFi, Bluetooth, EVDO and HSPA equipped “notebook PC” that, going by the accompanying photo, looks to be the company’s much-rumored netbook.  The device, described as both the PCG-1P1L and PCG-1P2L, uses the Qualcomm Gobi WLAN chipset, and measures approximately 9.5 x 4.5-inches.

While details are scant, what’s known is that the netbook runs Windows and has b/g/n WiFi.  Given the dimensions, it’s hard to imagine that Sony will be squeezing in a trackpad; instead, they could be using either a trackpoint or an optical mouse as found on the Samsung Omnia and Raon Digital Everun Note.

Sony have previously attempted to dismiss the netbook segment, but back in September the company admitted that they would likely release their own version simply to have a presence in the market.  The eventual product is likely to be priced at a premium, both because of its wireless connectivity and because of the Sony brand.

Micro-notebook iCEphone is the Swiss Army Knife of handsets

What would you get when you combine together an iPhone, aQWERTY keyboard, and a Game keypad? The upshot might be something like the iCEphone. Originally designed to meet the demanding requirements of the British military, the iCEphone is a combination of a cross-platform medical software package and a phone that sets a new industry standard in convergence technology. The rugged handset has both a desktop and a handheld mode. In the desktop mode, the intuitive keyboard folds out, and in the handheld mode, the secondary keyboard slips underneath. In both the modes, users will get the proper keyboard functionality.

MSI Wind U120 on display at trade show; cavorts with U100

The MSI Wind U120 has been roving the tradeshows, showing off its slick new “Thinkpad-inspired” design and spending some quality time with its parents.  In this case it’s the Wind U100, which looks pretty playtime in comparison to the U120’s sharper edges and two-tone color-scheme.

Hardware differences between the two models are pretty sparse.  The ports have been moved slightly, and the microphone has dropped from the top bezel and down to the right-hand side of the screen.  Both have the same keyboard together with the same internal specifications which we’ve come to know and tire of: Intel Atom processor, 1GB of RAM, the usual netbook fare.

It’s undoubtedly a sharper design, and the inclusion of HSDPA (though it’s not clear if it’s going to be standard across the range or an option) is always good.  The nine-cell battery pack also made an appearance, though doesn’t MSI know that we’ve moved on from “more cells good” to “bigger cells better“?
