SlashGear Week in Review - Week 47 2008

blackberry-verizon-storm-p2-6-vn-480x270Most anticipated news this week was the launch of the BlackBerry Storm on Verizon Wireless, RIM’s first touchscreen handset.  If you’re at all considering the Storm then make sure to check out our two part super-review: part one is here, part two is here.

Meanwhile, Apple released firmware 2.2 for the iPhone, bringing with it Street View and over-the-air podcast downloads among other things.  Check out the full details of the upgrade here.  That release was followed in short order by QuickPwn for v2.2.  What the new firmware didn’t include was MMS messaging, but that might be arriving sooner rather than later if Mobispine have their way.

Microsoft launched the New Xbox Experience this week, but the update was mildly soured by the sudden disappearance of hundreds of Sony Pictures movies from Netflix.  Sony Pictures maintain it’s not an Xbox 360-specific problem, merely one of licencing, but if our commentors are anything to go by their protests are falling on deaf - or doubtful - ears.

ASUS’ Eee Top ET1602 had its official launch in Taiwan on Thursday, a 15.6-inch touchscreen desktop.  It’s the first of a range of similar all-in-one nettops, according to company CEO Jerry Shen, which they’ll need if they’re to compete with MSI’s just-revealed Wind Neton machines.

We’ve had a few exclusive unboxings this week, with Sleek Audio’s W-1 Wireless headphones adapter, the Nanovision MIMO UM-710 and UM-730 USB displays and Apple’s new late-2008 model MacBook Air all dropping into the SlashGear postbox.  We also took a hands-on look at HP’s Touchsmart tx2 multitouch Tablet PC.

Meanwhile in reviews the HP Mini 1000 netbook, those cute Nanovision displays and Samsung’s Behold all got put through their paces.  Finally we looked at HP’s xw6600 and xw4600 workstations and came away impressed: if you’d like to win the latter machine, make sure you check out our SlashGear HP workstation giveaway!  Good luck!

HP TouchSmart now open to developers

In an effort to expand the number of compatible applications, HP has just opened up the HP TouchSmart to third party developers. This should help bring more touch-friendly applications to the device.

hp_touchsmart_1

The new move made it so the TouchSmart Application Developer Guidelines were released to third party developers. Now anyone can make programs for the HP computer. To go along with this, and to boost developer turnout, HP has started backing Capable Networks’ Touchsmart Community. This will make it so more people have access to the developer guidelines and makes it so developers have a place to talk and share ideas.

This TouchSmart Community is also running a contest in conjunction with all of this that will provide one lucky winner the opportunity to show off their application at the 2009 Consumer Electronics Show in the HP booth. Sounds like a good deal to us!

Thanks, Peter!

Sony announces another notebook battery recall

Sony has announced yet another notebook battery recall affecting approximately 35,000 notebook battery packs in the U.S. and an additional 65,000 units sold worldwide. The recall involves notebook systems sold by several PC manufacturers using Sony 2.15Ah lithium ion cell batteries.  40 incidents have been reported worldwide involving overheating of these batteries – some of which included smoke and/or flames. Sony believes the incidents were related to “manufacturing line adjustments made from October 2004 till June 2005. According to DigiTimes, affected notebook systems come from HP, Toshiba, and Dell. Here’s a breakdown of affected models:

HP models:

Toshiba models:

Sony batteries recalled on several laptop models

10-20-08-eltb026k_bigTalk about a super bummer. Looks like we have another laptop battery recall situation on our hands. In fact, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission has announced a recall of 35,000 laptop batteries manufactured by Sony.

And the reason is what you would expect. It seems the Lithium-ion batteries have the tendency to overheat, catch on fire and pose a burn hazard to people. And this is no joke. Apparently, 19 people have already reported problems with overheating. 17 reports involved actual flames and 2 people received mild burns from the faulty batteries.

While the recall is merely voluntary at the moment, it wouldn’t hurt to give the list of affected laptops a good perusal, which includes HP, Compaq, Dell and Toshiba laptops. I don’t know about you, but I wouldn’t want my laptop battery to suddenly burst into flames. Just doesn’t sound fun to me.

HP to give major netbook discounts through AT&T and Verizon

The netbook is such a hot commodity. And since HP has jumped on the bandwagon with their HP Mini 1000 and the Mini 1000 Vivienne Tam Edition (pictured below), they’ve been looking to foreign markets, specifically wireless carriers, for ideas on giving discounts to further push their products.

So in Taiwan it seems that you can get an ASUS Eee PC for just $29. That is, with a two-year contract with Far EasTone. And while many people lament the contract, that is a $400 savings off of the computer!

With this model in mind, HP is now looking to bring the same idea stateside with their two new netbooks. The HP Mini 1000 is currently going for $399, while the Mini 1000 Vivienne Tam Edition is priced at $699. Kevin Frost of HP told the Wall Street Journal that the long-term model for netbooks would be a deal like that in Asia and the UK where you’d sign up for a contract and get netbook for a significant discount. Verizon and AT&T were mentioned as potential candidates. But what I want to know is why hasn’t anyone thought of this sooner?
