The KDL-52XBR6’s "jack pack" includes four advanced HDMI connections that will ensure maximum picture quality as high-def formats evolve. Sony calls them 24p True Cinema capable, which means they can accept the 1080p/24 output from a Blu-ray player. Most movies are originally shot at 24p (24 frames per second), so this feature lets you see video in its most flawless form. One HDMI input is placed on the side of the TV so it’s easier to hook up an HD camcorder or video game console.

Movies and many prime time TV programs are shot at 24 frames per second. This means that TVs operating at any refresh rate that is not an even multiple of 24 will have to do some interpolation to present the content. TVs operating at at 30Hz or 60Hz traditionally solved this via a method called "2:3 pulldown". The television repeats the first film frame over the first two fields of video, and the second film frame over the next three fields of video (1, 1, 2, 2, 2), and continues to do this with the 3rd and 4th frames, the 5th and 6th framer (1,1,2,2,2 - 3,3,4,4,4 - 5,5,6,6,6), and so on until 24 frames are displayed over 60 refresh cycles. This discrepancy in the number of times frames are displayed can lead to a jerky motion in filmed material which some viewers notice  for example, especially with scenes that pan.

Panasonic’s "IPS Alpha" LCD is their most advanced panel technology. It lets you enjoy exceptional picture quality when watching from the sides, above, or below the screen. Colors remain clear and vivid from nearly any spot in the room. That’s an appealing trait in any setup, but it’s especially desirable in a bedroom where furnishings often require a TV to be tucked in a corner or perched on a dresser instead of carefully positioned for optimum viewing.

The set is GalleryPlayer compatible, so you can use the stylish TC-37LZ85 as your own private art gallery for those times when you’re not watching TV. While the set’s sleek design doesn’t actually imitate a high-end picture frame, we’re generally pleased with the clean lines and reasonably thin bezel. Below the screen is the set’s speaker bar, which contains two 10-watt speakers. These produce good audio quality and can deliver a bit of punch for TV, movies and even games, and we found the results at simulating surround sound quite reasonable as well. It still won’t compare to a dedicated home theater system, but for a den, small living room or bedroom setting the speakers should easily meet your needs.

There are two main HD resolutions in use today by HD broadcasters and other sources: 1080i and 720p. One is not necessarily better than the other; 1080i has more lines and pixels, but 720p is a progressive-scan format that should deliver a smoother image that stays sharper during motion. Another format is also becoming better known: 1080p, which combines the superior resolution of 1080i with the progressive-scan smoothness of 720p. True 1080p content is extremely scarce, however, and none of the major networks have announced 1080p broadcasts. The term 1080p today appears mostly in reference to the displays’ native resolution, not the source.

The sound on this television is better than your average TV giving you 20 Watts of virtual surround sound from its full range speakers. As this is a Full HD TV you will need to be able to connect a number of HD sourced products, so the addition of three HDMI inputs is very welcome.

Built in the shiny new Kameyama II plant, the LC-52D92U has a plethora of goodies that show the recent rapid advancement in the LCD world. Last August, I reviewed one of the first displays from this factory. While the price was, ahem, a little steep, it showed where Sharp was headed. This 52-inch model takes all that was good about that TV, improves on it, adds some new features, and drops the price significantly.

Connectivity is excellent on the LC52D65U. As a late-model TV we expected a handful of HDMI inputs, but its total of five is generous by any standard. Four can be found on the back panel while a fifth is located on the right side. Other jacks include two component-video, one VGA-style PC (1,600×1,200-pixel maximum resolution), one RF for antenna or cable, and two standard-definition inputs (one composite- and one S-Video) that, if connected, each replace a component-video input. There’s also an optical digital audio output, an analog stereo audio output and an RS-232 connection for custom control systems. That side panel adds another composite-video connection, but the USB-style port is for "service only," not for photos or music.

The LC-52D92U provides a comprehensive array of inputs on its back panel. Along with three HDMI jacks, you get a DVI-I port, two component-video sets, and an RS-232C terminal for hooking up to a home control system. Its remote control has a fairly clean layout as well as a fully backlit keypad. To switch sources, you hit the Input button and scroll through active inputs using the remote’s arrow keys.

The set’s screen reflects virtually no light, and the five-wavelength backlight system casts an extremely bright picture. This has been the greatest benefit of LCD over plasma and other display technologies. With the Sharp LC-52D92U you can comfortably watch TV with the lights on and not worry about the picture being even remotely washed out. This is ideal for those viewers who don’t want to feel like they’re in a cave while watching TV. Unfortunately, what we didn’t like so much was that in a completely dark room the set suffers from a bit of uneven uniformity across the screen. There are some alternating darker and light strips that run vertically down the screen, and while this is a common problem with many LCD models, it seems to be a bit more noticeable on the LC-52D92U.

Mitsubishi’s exclusive 4D Video Noise Reduction uses advanced algorithms to better identify video noise from fine detail and correct the signal rather than distort it. Video noise is caused by distortions in the video signal and makes the picture too look grainy or snowy. As signal resolutions improve with the introduction of DVD, digital cable/ satellite and HDTV, the loss of sharpness produced by most noise reduction circuits becomes more noticeable. Mitsubishi’s advanced 4D Video Noise Reduction corrects the image in four dimensions: horizontally, vertically, within each frame and across multiple frames to provide an image that is crystal clear and extraordinarily detailed
