Rockstar has seen critical acclaim and great success from its Grand Theft Auto franchise. At the same time, gamers and critics have loved the game, it has had its share of heat in the form of controversy around the games violent and sexual content.
Despite the good and bad publicity, GTA IV proved to be a very popular game when it launched on the PS3 and Xbox 360. Shortly after launch, Rockstar announced that the Xbox 360 version would also get exclusive download content. Today Rockstar announced that GTA IV is now available on the PC.
Many ardent PC gamers have been waiting for the game to come to the PC. Rockstar says the PC version has new features, including multiplayer modes with 32 players per map. The console version multiplayer maps stop at 16 players. PC gamers also get video capture and editing capability and higher resolution graphics along with a custom radio station that allows uploading of personal music library to listen to in game.

NPD Group announced on Thursday that the incredible sales of Grand Theft Auto IV did not translate to increased sales of next generation consoles from Microsoft and Sony. While 871,000 copies of GTA IV were sold for the Xbox 360 during the month of May, only 187,000 Xbox 360 consoles were sold during the same period. Meanwhile, 443,000 copies of GTA IV were sold for the PS3 with Sony selling 209,000 PS3 consoles during the month of May.
Now compare this to the Nintendo Wii which sold 675,000 consoles during the same time period - that’s more than the two other platforms combined. This is pretty incredible when you consider that GTA IV isn’t available yet for the Wii.
Yes.. the Wii continues to rock.

The numbers are in for Grand Theft Auto IV and the game has surpassed all-time entertainment records for day one and week one sales by dollar value! Take-Two Interactive Software said that GTA IV sold approximately 6 million units globally for an estimated retail value of $500 million dollars during the first week. The game sold approximately 3.6 million units during the first day alone bringing in roughly $310 million dollars globally. According to Take-Two, these are the largest numbers in the “history of interactive entertainment” and might be the largest of any movie or music launch to date. Grand Theft Auto IV is developed by Rockstar North and is available for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 platforms.

According to a report in the NYT, Grand Theft Auto IV reached sales of over $500 million in its first seven days on the market. Take Two Interactive said the game sold approximately 6 million copies worldwide since its launch last Tuesday.
The numbers significantly exceeded expectations of many analysts who expected to see around 5 million copies sold in the first two weeks. Take Two also stated that 3.6 million of those copies were sold the first day of the launch globally for around $310 million in sales. This number even exceeds the numbers we saw for the Halo 3 launch for both first day and first week sales.
“Grand Theft Auto IV’s first week performance represents the largest launch in the history of interactive entertainment, and we believe these retail sales levels surpass any movie or music launch to date,” said Strauss Zelnick, Chairman of Take-Two.
The success of Grand Theft Auto IV could not only help with direct income but could also help Take Two with convincing shareholders to hang on a little longer and not to give in to Electronic Arts, who is attempting a hostile takeover with offerings to current shareholders.

Hot on the heels of the SP1 limited release, Microsoft has now announced the availability of Windows DreamScene for Vista Ultimate users. If you’ll recall, we caught a glimpse of what an in-motion desktop looked like earlier this year, and while we’re sure some will get more fired up (ahem) over this than others, it makes for good eye candy if you’ve nothing better to do with system resources. Additionally, it was noted that users will have access to a number of animated desktops in conjunction with Stardock, and those itching for even more Ultimate Extras can apparently look for more details to come their way later this year.
