Garmin Edge 500 Receives Two New Colors

Garmin Edge 500 Receives Two New Colors

Still remember the Garmin Edge 500 Cycling GPS that we mentioned in September 2009? Garmin has recently announced two new color schemes for this gadget. Available in argyle Edge 500 and neutral Edge 500, both models will be officially released at the Tour of California in mid-May 2010. As a reminder, the Garmin Edge 500 can track the cyclist’s speed, distance, time, GPS position, elevation, and calories burned. [Navigadget]

Garmin moves from Cayman Islands to Switzerland

Garmin wants to shift the location of its incorporation from the Cayman Islands to Switzerland, a move which was approved by the board and now waits for share holders to chime in. Company says the Swiss office will provide a base for expansion in Europe and allow for easier acquisition of European businesses. Garmin would then become a Swiss company but would still remain subject to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission reporting requirements and other rules of Nasdaq. All their finances would still have to be managed in U.S. dollars too.

two new colors for Garmin Edge 500

Garmin just announced two new color schemes for their Garmin Edge 500 devices - a highly popular device among pro cyclists. The two new colors are called argyle Edge 500 and the neutral Edge 500, both of which will be officially launched at the Tour of California, this coming mid-May.

Garmin Edge 500 first came out last September and has been selling for around $350. Some of the features of the Edge 500 includes ANT+ wireless, tracking things like speed, distance, time, elevation, and even calories. Since elevation data from the GPS signals isn’t all that accurate Garmin Edge 500 actually uses an barometric altimeter.

Garmin Edge also pairs wirelessly with Garmin speed/cadence sensors and features advanced heart rate-based calorie computation when used with a Garmin heart rate monitor. Edge 500 also displays temperature readings, changes time zones automatically and alerts riders if they’re moving but the timer is not running. With up to 18 hours of battery life, Edge 500 features a low-profile, quarter-turn mount that fits easily on the stem or handlebars. The new argyle Edge 500 is packaged with Garmin’s premium soft-strap heart rate monitor, speed/cadence sensor, bike mount, AC charger and USB cable. The neutral Edge 500 comes with the bike mount, AC charger and USB cable, and it can be paired with the other optional accessories when purchased separately to best suit each specific cyclist’s needs.

Garmin Connect Team – for hire

Garmin told the developers of their popular software – Garmin Connect – that they were closing down their San Fran office and moving everybody to Kansas. This obviously didn’t go so well. The Garmin Connect connect team now put up this website, telling people they’re not going anywhere, while showcasing their skills.

On the other hand this could related to the fact that the migration from motionbased.com (which was bought by Garmin) to Garmin connect went nothing like planned and all the features that people loved didn’t make it to release software. Now Edge, Forerunner, etc users all have to rely on Garmin Connect.

If you’ve used both motionbased and Garmin Connect please tell us what you think.

Garmin Asus nuvifone A50

Garmin Asus nuvifone A50

Garmin Asus partnership has announced the brand new nuvifone A50 from the Mobile World Congress in Spain. The new nuvifone A50 is an Android powered device that claims to be more location aware than any other smartphone out there.

A50 has a 3.5″ HVGA capacitive touchscreen, 4GB internal storage, microSD card slot, and an accelerometer. Thanks to the Android platform you’ll have access tens of thousands of applications and if you wish you can sync with your work email thanks to Microsoft Exchange server.

Of course Garmin Asus nuvifone A50 comes with Garmin navigation preloaded and all the maps you need are actually on your device so you won’t have to wait for 3G coverage fairies to grant you access.

Other features of the device are the 3MP camera, and the E-Compass.

Garmin says the nuvifone A50 receives its location information from multiple sources including satellite, network-based and terrestrial sources…. Not sure what they mean but we don’t think any of those is a new technology.

It will be available in Europe first quarter of this year.

Garmin Asus nuvifone M10

Another brand new phone we came across today is the Garmin Asus nuvifone M10. We talked about the M10 just a few days ago but it looks like the official word got out today.

As expected Garmin Asus nuvifone M10 will be a Windows device running Windows Mobile 6.5.3. It has a 3.5″ WVGA screen, 3D task manager, 512MB RAM, and 512MB ROM, and 4GB of storage.

You can expect a decent life from the 1500mAh battery which should get you at least a day on those HSDPA or WiFi networks you can hop on.

Of course Garmin navigation will be preloaded with almost all the bells and whistles of a standalone GPS navigation system.

Garmin Asus nuvifone M10 will come out in Asia and Europe first in first half of this year. Is anyone still interested in a Windows Mobile phone though?
