SlashGear Week in Review - Week 48 2008

It’s been a shorter working week what with Thanksgiving on Thursday, and much of the gadget news has been around what offers, bargains and discounts were on offer at cash-strapped retailers. SlashGear has done its bit to ease your present picking pickle, with the 2008 Holiday Gift Guide. We’ve also had reviews of Sony’s VAIO LV and VAIO RT all-in-one PCs; will you be lucky enough to find one of these monster media machines under your tree next month?

Elsewhere, rumors have been ramping up about Microsoft’s possible entrance to the consumer cellphone market. According to the latest sources, an NVIDIA Tegra-based device blending Zune media capabilities and Sidekick messaging expertize is already in the offing. Codenamed ‘Pink’, there’s even talk of it making an appearance at CES 2009.

Something else finally hitting the stands at the start of next year is the Garmin nuvifone, the sat-nav company’s GPS-heavy touchscreen cellphone. Captivating when we first saw it, many months ago, has delay after delay robbed the nuvifone of its charm? Until then, we’ll sate ourselves with the Samsung Omnia SCH-i910, fresh to Verizon and reviewed by our good selves here.

Dell has done its bit to push higher-capacity solid-state storage into buyers’ reach, with the arrival of a $100 32GB SSD option on the Inspiron Mini 9 netbook. Meanwhile, Verizon pushed out a BlackBerry Storm OS update that, it’s hoped, will begin to change the tide of opinion claiming the touchscreen handset needed a few more trips through quality control before it was fit for public consumption. If you’ve got a Storm yourself, let us know how you get on with the new firmware.

sleek_audio_wireless_02-480x370In other reviews, Sleek Audio’s SA6 in-ear headphones only got better with the cord-snipping W-1 Kleer wireless system, while we found that Apple has tweaked the MacBook Air into what could be the finest ultraportable notebook on the market. We also revealed that SlashGear will be one of your fifty chances to win in the HP Magic giveaway: over $6,000 of top tech toys that would put an end to your desperate Christmas shopping.

Garmin Nuvi 510 weatherproof touchscreen GPS

At first glance we’d expect Garmin’s new Nuvi 510 to be a budget model.  After all, the 3.5-inch screen is smaller (and regular aspect rather than widescreen) than most other new GPS devices we see, and there’s no fancy graphics or clever 3D building renders.  However Garmin intend the 510 to be used not only in a car but on a motorbike and at sea, and so the feature set is slanted toward that.

That means you get chunky icons suitable for stabbing at even with gloves on, an IPX7-standard waterproof casing, and battery life rated up to 8hrs since you might not be using the Nuvi 510 near a standard 12V car power socket.  A range of mounts offer a sturdy place for the 510 to perch no matter the vehicle, as well as providing extras like Bluetooth to connect with motorcycle helmets that have integrated microphones and speakers.

Garmin include topographic, nautical and detailed street mapping, with further maps optional. It accepts microSD cards, has capacity for 1,000 stored locations, and is FM traffic compatible. The Garmin Nuvi 510 is available now, priced at €300 ($376).

Garmin Edge 705 Team Edition cycling computer available

Garmin Edge 705T Cycling ComputerI used to ride a bike frequently, when I was like 12 and couldn’t drive. Since then I try and not get out in the Texas heat on a bicycle with moronic rednecks flying by seeing how close to you they can get with their giant cow trailer pulling mirrors. I do know several people who like cycling though.

For those of you who are really into cycling Garmin has announced that its Team Garmin Edition Edge 705 is now available. The cycling computer comes in orange representing the uniform color of the Garmin-Chipotle cycling team.

The device offers cyclists turn-by-turn directions and features a heart rate monitor, speed and cadence sensor and City Navigator mapping. The GPs maps also include official race courses, saved rides, waypoints, and workouts as well. Pricing for the Team Garmin Edge 705 is unknown at this time.

Garmin nüvi 7×5 series with optional MSN Direct & A2DP Bluetooth

It’s not just the bargain end that Garmin are tackling.  The company also has Navigon’s new 7200T in their sights, with the new nüvi 7×5 series of in-car GPS devices.  Each of the four models - the nüvi 755T, 765T, 775T and 785T - have a 4.3-inch wide-aspect touchscreen, lane assist for close-up detail of intersections, semi-transparent 3D models of significant landmarks and, aside from the 755T, stereo Bluetooth support.

The 755T, 765T and 775T all have lifetime traffic alert subscriptions from NAVTEQ Traffic, while the 785T uses the MSN Direct service with a trial subscription to their information on traffic conditions, fuel prices, weather reports, movie listings, headline news, stock quotes and local events.  Each can apparently render mapping faster than previously, meaning quicker and smoother zooming and accelerated re-routing.

Garmin’s HotFix technology, which caches satellite data for a quicker position fix, is present, as is the ability to load the GPS with geo-tagged photos.  The 755T will be priced at $500, the 765T at $600, the 775T at $800 and the 785T at $700; they should be available sometime in Q3 2008.
