Saturday morning geeky fun post: Boba Fett playing the Zelda theme song on an accordion

Section: Gadgets / Other

What can you really say here, you have a guy sitting in the subway wearing a Boba Fett helmet and playing the Zelda theme song on a accordion. Geekiness at its best, or maybe at its worst, I am not really sure but still it was fun to watch.

Disney World is covering the monorails with Tron light cycle graphics

Riding on a Tron light cycle may not be possible, but riding in a monorail plastered with light cycle graphics will be. Of course in this case I am imagining it being more interesting to see from a distance as opposed to riding in. Anyway, according to the Disney Parks Blog the light cycle covered monorails will begin making an appearance this month. And just in case you missed it yesterday, the Tron Legacy trailer in HD was released.

Tron Legacy trailer hits the web, watch in HD

Section: Gadgets / Other

A few months back we saw the movie poster, a screenshot and brief synopsis released for Tron Legacy and while that was fun to look at we now have something a little better—the movie trailer—in HD. Of course, in reality what we have is 2 minutes and 21 seconds of a tease, because in the end we still have to wait until December 17, 2010 to see the full movie.

A Clear Indication Where Technology Is Headed: Skinput

Section: Gadgets / Other

Skinput

I feel like technology is at a point where a new mind-blowing, game-changing discovery is just around the corner. Well if Skinput is any indication as to how we will be interacting with data and devices, than I’d say we are closer than I thought to this breakthrough.

Skinput, a technology currently in research by a couple of Microsoft Researchers and a Carnegie Mellon grad, is a very cool concept that will make it’s way into devices one way or another. The idea is to eliminate the use of touchscreens and keyboards and replace them with things that surround us anyways, such as walls or tables. But Skinput uses your skin as the surface of choice by tracking the frequencies at which your skin ripples after contact.

At this point the set-up required to use Skinput is an armband that senses the vibrations, and a pico projector attached to the shoulder to turn your arm into a screen. At this point the Skinput project has a 95% accuracy rating and can be used when the body is in motion. Even with this being the research stage of the project, I can’t wait to see what large manufacturers could do with this very cool input method.

Flash would reduce iPad battery life to just 1.5 hours, says Steve Jobs

Section: Gadgets / Other

flash logo Steve Jobs has thrown in a last-minute bid for being on crack in tech, claiming that if the iPad had Flash on it, battery life would decrease from 10 hours to 1.5 hours. Jobs made the comment to writers at the Wall Street Journal amid claims that Flash is “buggy” and old school technology that’s no longer relevant in today’s landscape. Uh, yeah, the software that powers more than 80 percent of the web’s video content, countless games, and major news websites is no longer relevant according to Jobs.

The Adobe vs. Apple battle has intensified in recent weeks due to the iPad’s glaring limitations by not having Flash support, but Jobs has taken to dismissing Flash and downplaying its importance. The latest shot at Adobe’s software is a bizarre claim that isn’t backed up by evidence. It’s obvious that Apple hasn’t considered loading Flash onto the iPad, so where did they get the idea that Flash would miraculously take away 90 percent of its battery life? And on the remote chance that this claim is true, Flash is obviously not as taxing on other devices, so the real problem lies with Apple in this scenario.

The irony of Jobs statement that Flash would kill the iPad is that he made those comments to the Wall Street Journal, a news source whose website is dependent on Flash for video and slideshows. Jobs was essentially telling one of the world’s largest and most-respected news outlets that their website sucks and will continue to suck on the iPad unless they and thousands of other websites ditch Flash.

The Scosche flipSYNC; fits on your keyring, charges and syncs your gadgets

The Scosche flipSYNC; fits on your keyring, charges and syncs your gadgets

There are always those little gadgets that, when you see them it makes you wonder why you have never seen one of those in the past. And for me, this is the case with a little device from Scosche that fits on your keychain. The gadget is called the flipSYNC and just as the name implies it flips apart and reveals a USB connector that you can use to charge and/or sync your USB devices.

The nice part here is that it looks to be small, and is designed to fit on your keychain which means it should almost always be with you. That means you are likely to never get caught out without that charging cable again. There is always the issue of losing your keys, but that is another issue entirely.

Anyway, the flipSYNC is available in two models, one that has micro and mini USB 2.0 and one that works with the iPhone or iPod touch. Both are going to retail for $19.99. Pre-orders are currently available and units are expected to begin shipping in the early Spring.

Iron Man 2 Coming To IMAX

Section: Gadgets / Other

IronMan2

With the recent visual craze following Avatar, its no surprise that more movies are going for bigger screens and more stunning visual screens. Iron man 2 has some plans to expand to the IMAX screen.

The highly anticipated sequel was shot not entirely with the IMAX friendly 70mm film, but the remaining will be upscaled to fit the massive screen. Similar to the way the Dark Knight was featured in IMAX. I personally can’t wait for the May 7 release date and the fact that it is going to IMAX is a big selling point for me.

ShowStoppers at CES 2010: Checking out the Energizer Energi To Go products

Section: Gadgets / Other

ShowStoppers at CES 2010: Checking out the Energizer Energi To Go products Energizer had their amazing team with their mobile brand, Energi To Go, in Las Vegas for Digital Experience 2010. The products they showed off were amazing, and one of the first thing that people attending this event saw, since they had the front and center booth. With today’s smartphones using so much battery life, Energi To Go offers an excellent solution to give you more uptime on the go. There are several different models available, which means there is something for everyone. If you have an iPhone, HTC Dream, Motorola DROID, whatever it might be, Energi To Go has a battery pack that can help you stay charged. For example, the XP4001 can charge two phones at once. You simply plug in the USB cables provided to the device, and then find the right tips for your devices to add to the end, and plug these into your devices. It’s really that simple. And if you have a device that needs even more power, they offer the Energi To Go XP18000, which can charge “netbooks and laptops, portable DVD players, digital cameras and camcorder batteries, cell and smart phones, MP3 players, GPS units and Bluetooth devices.” Basically, they have you covered for all your travel needs.

To make sure that Energi To Go is the right battery solution for you, they have a guarantee called TipFit that allows you to request a tip for a device they don’t currently support. Energi To Go will get the right tip connector made for you so you can enjoy long-lasting battery life. The best part about this guarantee is that it allows you to upgrade your devices and continue using the same Energi To Go battery that you purchased.

In addition to these re-chargeable batteries, Energi To Go has gone solar. By harnessing the sun’s rays, Energi To Go has made battery packs in 1000 mAh and 2000 mAh models that can charge your smartphone, digital camera, iPod, or other mp3 player.

Disclosure: Energizer Energi To Go is a sponsor for CES 2010, helping keep Gadgetell writers powered up and charged without having to worry.
