Ply phone is Swiss Army knife of phones

Ply phone is Swiss Army knife of phonesThe Ply phone concept packs so many gadgets inside of it’s wood exterior, you expect to see the Swiss Army logo on it. Like it’s namesake plywood, it has layers and in each layer there resides a gadget, like a phone, game controller, photo printer, projector and more. Designer Hideo Kanbara is obviously a big fan of all-in-one. A prototype actually exists and can be seen at the KDDI Studio in Harajuku. When in Tokyo check it out. I think most of us would love to see something like this become a reality and this is probably what future phones will be like.

ply phone stacks a whole world of gadgets into one device

The Ply concept phone has so many features stacked into its wooden shell that I had to read about it twice to fully grasp its awesomeness. Each layer holds a gadget with a distinct function, including a phone, game controller, photo printer, and projector (among other things). Zowie!

Ply Phone KDDI

It’s designed by Hideo Kanbara. If I met him right now I would probably ask him one question: will you marry me? And then hearts and flowers would fly out of his butt, I’m guessing, because anyone who designs this is brilliant and fabulous and genius and all of that.

Ply Phone KDDI

Of course, like so many fabulous things, this is still a concept. And of course, the Ply site, which has loads of pretty pictures is all in Japanese. (That is so my bete noire.)

Ply Phone KDDI

They actually made one of these and it’s on display at the KDDI Studio in Harajuku, so if you happen to be in Tokyo right now then feel free to go and check it out.

Ply Phone KDDI

In closing: this is one concept I would love to see become a reality and I will so go on record as promising to pay thousands of dollars for this if and when it becomes a reality.

Laundry Basket With Wi-Fi

Laundry Basket With Wi-Fi

The iBasket laundry basket concept was specially designed to prevent any unpleasant odors from your dirty clothes. The device blows air through the clothes for air circulation. The cool factor of this concept is that it has the ability to sent instant messages via Wi-Fi connectivity to inform you its current status. Maybe the iBasket will inform you whether the basket is full of dirty clothes or not. What a smart gadget it is! Too bad, it is just a concept. [Boing-boing]

Intel and Yahoo! announce Widget Channel initiative

Preview_of_the_Widget_Channel

Intel and Yahoo! are looking at new ways to bring Internet content and services to the television environment with the announcement of the new “Widget Channel”. The Widget Channel is a television application framework powered by the Yahoo! Widget Engine, and optimized for TV and related CE (Consumer Electronics) devices utilizing the Intel Architecture platform. Developers using the Widget Channel framework can utilize standard web programming languages and technologies to create widgets that bring together television content with interactive Internet-based services from a variety of sources. Yahoo! also plans on releasing their own branded TV Widgets that utilize their own services.

It sounds nice but how does this really pan out? The basic idea is as follows - developers create TV-based Internet applications in the form of widgets (powered by Yahoo! Widgets). These widgets then run on Intel architecture devices.. ah but what kind of devices are these? Since we’re talking about the television market, they have to be either HDTV sets, or set-top boxes (or perhaps standalone CE portable devices some day). This is why Intel is in the picture - they’ve been trying to break into the consumer electronics market and the Widget Channel is the perfect opportunity to do so.

Now why would Yahoo! want to be in this picture? Once software developers are on-board with their TV Widgets and set-top boxes get distributed to the masses, Yahoo! can 1) spread their influence via Internet services and 2) generate additional revenues through advertising - this time via televised content. Consider the possibilities of Internet based advertising delivered alongside television content!

The key to making this all pan out will be the hardware manufacturers of CE devices - the folks who manufacture HDTV sets, set-top boxes, and portable consumer electronics. If there’s wide-spread adoption, then Yahoo! and Intel could be on to something. If no one bites, then well.. this one will just drift off into space.

The two companies plan on releasing a software development kit to developers, advertisers/publishers, as well as hardware manufacturers of TVs and consumer electronics. The Widget Channel will also include a Widget Gallery where developers can publish their TV widgets across multiple devices.

Obnoxious:

It’s needless to say that technology has made our life a bed of roses, for most of the things we need are available at the push of a button. With the technology giants churning out gizmos to suit every temperament and need, it has not dawned upon them that a one-stop solution to juice up all kinds of gadgets is the need of this hour. The Universal Mobile charger prototype could be a permanent solution to a common problem.
