EA Sports announces Active for Wii

EA Sports today announced their version of Wii Fit better known as EA Sports Active. Good thing about EA’s offering is that it does not require any additional peripheral. Active can played without the need of balance board. However, the Active expands a little in terms of exercises if a user happens to use balance board with the game. EA Sports will bundle the game with two straps (for holding Wii Remote while running), resistance band (for rigorous exercise) and a nutritional booklet.

EA Sports Active is complementary to Nintendo’s Wii Fit because EA reckons that their exercises are more inclined to the Western way while Wii Fit includes eastern style exercises like stretching and balancing. The game is expected to launch in Spring next year carrying a price tag of $59.99.

On a side note, an interview of Peter Moore, President with GameSpot reveals that EA might also be incorporating its Active technology in other games in the future. This means that we can now run and kick in the air while playing FIFA on Wii?

Check out the trailer below.

EA ships Mirror’s Edge to retailers

Mirrors EdgeLast weekend I downloaded the Mirror’s Edge demo for my PS3 and spent a bit of time playing. The game is very cool and fun. You are a free runner that moves atop the buildings in a massive city delivering messages.

To get from one place to the other you have to run, jump, and fight your way there across rooftops. The game has a very cool premise and offers very original gameplay. EA announced this week that it has shipped Mirror’s Edge to retailers worldwide.

The game will be available for the holiday season on the PS3 and Xbox 360. PC gamers will get their version in January. I never understand why they won’t release the PC version at the same time. I guess they are hoping the game will drive console sales. This will be one of the coolest games this holiday season.

EA announces Need for Speed Live

Need for Speed LiveI have been a big fan of EA’s Need for Speed franchise for years. Most of us have probably played the games and though that it would be cool to do those things in real life; aside from crashing, running form the cops and being arrested that is.

EA has announced that it will be bringing some of the cool Need for Speed action to the real world in a live racing event to be held next summer called Need for Speed Live. The event will last for a full week and include racing, drifting, and video game competitions.

The contest will invite some of the top drifters from around the world and time attack cars from Europe to the event. There will also be famous racecars and exotic vehicles on display. The catch for Need for Speed fans in the U.S. is that the event will be held at the Brands Hatch Circuit near London, England.

Dead Space goes gold

Dead Space PS3 Obsidian SuitVideo games are at the top of many holiday wish lists and the holiday season will be here before you know it. One of the most anticipated video games of the holiday season on the PC, PS3, and Xbox is Dead Space from EA.

EA has announced that Dead Space has already gone gold. The game will ship on October 14 for the PS3 and Xbox with PC gamers getting their version on October 20. EA is offering nothing special for PC gamers, but console owners who buy in the first two weeks will be given a special suit.

The special suits are more than mere skins, they are also stronger than the standard suit and offer more inventory slots. EA also announced a Dead Space Ultra Limited Edition that will sell for $149 exclusively through the EA store. Only 1000 copies of the limited edition version will be available and will include the game, animated movie, bonus DVD, 97-page art book, 160-page graphic novel and more.

Crysis Warhead launches this week

Crysis WarheadI am a huge fan of PC gaming, not that I don’t do my share of console gaming. If a title is available on multiple platforms though, I prefer it on PC. Recently the number of exclusive PC titles has been very slim, but EA and Crytek are changing that with one doozy of a PC exclusive.

EA and Crytek announced today that Crysis Warhead will be available in retail stores on September 18 as a PC exclusive. Crysis Warhead marks the second installment in the Crysis universe and the first game was tons of fun. As fantastic as the graphics in the original Crysis were, Crytek promises even more this time around.

Warhead uses the new CryENGINE 2 for graphics and if the original CryENGINE in any indication of how powerful the new version is, you better start upgrading your PC if you want to run the game maxed out. Possibly the best news in today’s world of $50 top-tier games is that Warhead will go for only $29.99 and will include Crysis Wars, the multiplayer game as well. Warhead follows Psycho from the first game to see what he was up to while Nomad was carrying the original game.

Neil Young leaves Electronic Arts to launch NGMoCo for next-gen iPhone games and more

When you’re part of one of the biggest game publishers in the world, and you realize that the next generation of gaming lies on a device called the iPhone, what do you do? While you’re mulling over your answer, let me tell you what Neil Young did. He left his company (Electronic Arts) to launch his own gaming company.

Neil Young’s gaming company will be “a next-gen mobile games publisher, specifically and initially focused on the iPhone.” He’s called it ng: moco, which stands for Next-Gen Mobile Company. Name-wise, it’s not as creative as he can get, I’m sure. But I’m guessing he’s focusing all his creativity on the games he’ll develop.

Neil Young leaves Electronic Arts to launch NGMoCo for next-gen iPhone games and more

Young seems to firmly believe that the next generation of mobile gaming lies on the Apple iPhone. As such, he will dedicate his time from now on in developing iPhone specific mobile games.

The following statement pretty much sums up what he thinks about the iPhone in terms of gaming:

“The device itself is, from a performance standpoint, somewhere between a DS and a PSP, but unlike the PSP, it’s got touch, the accelerometer, the camera, the microphone… it’s location-aware, and from a usage standpoint it’s always on, always with you and always connected to the network.”

That’s why he’s wasted no time in creating NGMoCo, to attract developers to his side and build a fleet of dedicated mobile game developers like him who share his vision of an iPhone dominated gaming world. For the time being.
