Denon DVD-A1UD Blu-ray player

Given the ratio of DVD player owners to Blu-ray player owners, you could argue that any of the high-definition decks are “high end”; however Denon Japan have announced what they’re claiming is the world’s first high end Blu-ray universal player.  The posh title is to take into account that the DVD-A1UD is capable not only of playing the usual Blu-ray and DVD video discs, but also DVD-audio, SACD and standard CDs.  It also comes with the company’s DENON Link 4th technology, which apparently improves performance even from standard-definition sources.

Connectivity includes two HDMI 1.3 ports, component video, S-video, composite video, optical digital audio, coaxial digital, balanced two-channel stereo analog audio, ethernet, an SD card slot and a serial port, together with a DENON LINK port.  Thankfully the whole thing can be updated with new firmware, as in its current configuration the DVD-A1UD doesn’t support BD-Live.

Denon are promising the DVD-A1UD in Japan by the end of January 2009, priced at 546,000 yen ($5,879) in black or silver.  A European launch will follow in March 2009, priced at €4,000 ($5,046).

Aleratec launches second generation DVD/CD shredder

Aleratec CD/DVD ShredderSensitive and confidential information printed from our computers and stored on out portable hard drives and flash drives gets lots of attention. We shred paper, and can encrypt electronic data on portable storage. What many overlook though is security for data stored on CDs.

When it comes time to toss that CD or DVD out that has your company’s financial info on it, you don’t want to simply throw it in the trash can where anyone who finds it can pop it into a computer can see the info. You need to destroy the CD and Aleratec has a new CD/DVD Shredder that will do just that.

The gizmo is sort of like a heavy-duty paper shredder that cuts CDs and DVDs into four strips. The device has automatic on and off feature and the steel blades are completely enclosed. Once the disk is shredded, the data on it is no longer a concern to you. The DVD/CD Shredder retails for $44.99.

Netflix stops selling previously-viewed DVDs

Netflix has always had a great service on the side of their standard service. They are known for shipping DVDs to subscribers by mail and recently, for streaming movies over the Internet. But they also offered previously-viewed DVDs for sale.

That latter offering is about to be no more. In fact, the official news out of the Netflix camp is that since their primary business is the DVD rental shipments, they’ve opted to focus exclusively on that. DVDs that have been viewed before will no longer be sold from Netflix.

If you want to get in a few last cheap DVD purchases, however, you can do so by browsing their selection up until November 30th, when they will no longer be available. I don’t know about you folks, but I’m going to miss the $5.99 movie purchases.

portable dvd player gets huge screen, plays nes games

This portable entertainment system not only plays movies and music, it plays classic 8-bit Nintendo games.

Featuring an substantive 14-inch LCD screen (1024×768 resolution), the compact DVD system has a built-in NES emulator, and comes with a pair of gamepads so you can satisfy that 8-bit Nintendo craving wherever you go.

The screen can swivel 180 degrees, and when you’re done playing DVDs and NES games, there’s a karaoke mode and a (soon-to-be-obsolete analog) TV tuner on board. The player also has a USB port and SD/MS/MMC card slots, so you can play back your digital media files too.

And if you can’t figure out a way to get your old favorites loaded onto the system, that’s okay, because the player includes a disc with 300 retro games (I’m guessing that the guys at Nintendo had nothing to do with that).

Want one? You better hurry on over to Chinavasion and plunk down your $246.25 before Nintendo’s lawyers find out about this thing.

Star Wars TV/DVD with Lightsaber remote

Star Wars TV/DVD with Lightsaber remoteOpen letter to George Lucas: Please get a new hobby. Indy is just recovering from your brutal raping of him as you prepare to do it again in Indy V. You raped a Sarlacc Pitt sized hole in the Star Wars universe with Jar-Jar alone. And the merchandise that you approve gets crappier by the day. This Star Wars TV/DVD with Lightsaber Remote is a cheap plastic piece of turd that makes me feel sad. Even the lightsaber remote doesn’t help it. Please George, take up poker or backgammon, maybe bowling. We have suffered enough.

DViCO TViX-HD 6500 plays ripped Blu-ray discs

While HDTV recorders are not anything new, they do still catch our eye because they’ve yet to enter the mainstream when it comes to consumer electronics. However, DViCO has announced two new products that could change that.

10-17-08-tvix-r-2230

Pictured above is the TViX R-2230, which can play VOB and ISO files than have been ripped. It costs $399, by the way, though that’s not the real focus here. The real focus is on the TViX-HD 6500. And though it’s quite a bit more costly at $599, it certainly does pack in the features.

This device can play ripped Blu-ray discs. But the real kicker is it can play them back in HDMI. Other specs include S-Video and composite jacks, an HDMI 1.3 component, a USB port, multiple file format support, and an option DTV tuner. Unfortunately, a U.S. release is unlikely.

Brionvega RR226 record/CD/DVD combo does the robot

Brionvega RR226 record/CD/DVD combo does the robotJust look at that robot face on the Brionvega RR226. Who wouldn’t be charmed by that retro 60s ‘design? Both the RR226 and its 1965 counterpart, the Radiofonografo RR126, earned the nickname “musical component robots” due to that face, with it’s dials and speakers.

But it isn’t all about looks. Brionvega is known for creating superior decks with quality components. This one is no exception, combining a phonograph, radio, record player and a CD/DVD drive. In fact, the new model looks like a copy of the original, aside from the inclusion of the CD and DVD drive. No word on price yet, but we probably can’t afford it anyway.
