This is a nice instructable that uses (4) USB "Thumb Drives" and an old floppy disk enclosure to a make an external solid state hard drive. I know 8GB is not a lot of space, but it could hold some very useful and/or important information. I was able to find 1GB USB drives on Amazon for $2 and several different 8GB drives for $15.
I really like the aesthetics of these pieces made by Anna over at forty-two roads. They remind me of the table made in Craft's Fashioning Technology book. I would love to see these scaled up to "full size" and made of cardboard or plywood.

This "Portable Vinyl Record Player" will probably get you noticed at a rave, especially if you start scratching in the middle of the crowd chaos and add some amplification. Pretty nice build on this as far as it's shoulder strap portability, we just wonder how often it will skip.
This cool mod is a home brew treadmill connected up to the popular game, "World of Warcraft" so that you can move your characters around the world by actually "running" in place on the device. We've seen this before with a few other treadmill mods, but this one wins props for the best costumes and enthusiasm from the makers in the above video. Check out the link for lots of details on this project.
I made a post about Aerogel a while back and I still haven't figured out what to do with my sample. This website has a lot of practical information about Aerogel, including some experiments in conductivity and optics. It's a great place to start learning about this cool stuff.
Weight and strength wise Aerogel is most like the hard pink foam insulation used in insulating homes. It is extremely brittle. Press on it lightly and it will break. If you haven't used it before buy twice as much as you think you want. You'll need it. I also recommend finding some of that pink insulation and practicing with that first. It's foolish but worth it given the cost of Aerogel.
Curbly has a nice video how-to on building a modern inspired birdhouse. The final product looks a lot nicer than most versions found in the local hardware store. Hopefully your local birds will appreciate the design.
Anyone interested in design and architecture can appreciate the brilliant combination of modern materials and contemporary lifestyle patterns inhabitated in the classic mid-century modern ranch home. But rare is the lucky individual that'll every live in an Eichler or an iconic Case Study House. Heck, most of us will never even live in California.
