HP Compaq Mini 700 netbook lands in Europe

HP Compaq has launched Mini 700 netbook for the European market that looks nothing but a replica to the Mini 1000. The Mini 700 has the same 10.2-inch screen, Windows XP as the default OS and features the most common netbook 1.6GHz Intel Atom processor, 1GB RAM, Intel chipset that also handles the onboard graphics and a 60GB HDD.

Mini 700 will also have an integrated webcam, microphone card reader and two USB 2.0 ports. The only internet connectivity option is the Ethernet port whereas Wi-Fi, HSDPA and even short range communication Bluetooth module need to be added by customizing the netbook while buying. A 3-cell lithium-polymer battery will take care of the netbook for a good 2.5-3 hours on a single charge.

The Mini 700 will go for around 430 Euros ($600).

Sony batteries recalled on several laptop models

10-20-08-eltb026k_bigTalk about a super bummer. Looks like we have another laptop battery recall situation on our hands. In fact, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission has announced a recall of 35,000 laptop batteries manufactured by Sony.

And the reason is what you would expect. It seems the Lithium-ion batteries have the tendency to overheat, catch on fire and pose a burn hazard to people. And this is no joke. Apparently, 19 people have already reported problems with overheating. 17 reports involved actual flames and 2 people received mild burns from the faulty batteries.

While the recall is merely voluntary at the moment, it wouldn’t hurt to give the list of affected laptops a good perusal, which includes HP, Compaq, Dell and Toshiba laptops. I don’t know about you, but I wouldn’t want my laptop battery to suddenly burst into flames. Just doesn’t sound fun to me.

Compaq Mini 700 netbook is HP Mini 1000 clone

The Compaq Mini 700 has just been revealed and one thing we noticed right away was how eerily similar it looks to the also recently announced HP Mini 1000. And looking at the specs, the similarities don’t just stop at their looks.

compaq-mini-700

And while the biggest obvious difference is the Compaq logo, it also provides consumers the option of an HSDPA modem, which the HP model does not have. We can also get our hands on the Compaq model quicker than the HP, since the Mini 700 will be released in the UK in December and the Mini 1000 will be released in February of next year.

It is also rumored that when these models come to the US, the HP Mini 1000 will sport a 1024 x 600 resolution and the UK one will have a 1024 x 576 resolution. Interesting. The Compaq Mini 700 is also a bit cheaper at £299 or about $387 compared to the HP model’s £399 or about $517 price tag.

New HP business desktop gets HP Firefox Virtual Browser

HP Compaq dc7900

HP has its sights set on offering up some new computers to desktop PC business users. This line is called the HP Compaq dc7900 and you’ll find starting prices set around $600.

HP’s new Compaq dc7900 line will be available in ultra-slim desktop, small form factor or convertible minitower models. The company hasn’t yet unveiled a lot of technical details, but we do know these models will be Energy Star 4.0 qualified as well as running something new called the HP Firefox Virtual Browser. This is a real-time Web surfing environment which “corrals malicious content from a user’s Internet interactions and removes unwanted programs with a single click.” The dc7900 is apparently the first HP PC to have this offering.

You’ll also find with the dc7900 line some other new security features, including allowing “customers to securely exchange emails with a digital signature” and “permanently remove data from a PC prior to disposal.” It should be available later this month.
